Well, I missed an exciting night for my Lightning Bug...PMPS was 48!!!!! Woahhhh!!! So Kyle gave him a dose decrease of 2.25u. I'm not exactly sure how much food he gave him, he just told me it was a cross between the 5% and 15% that I had open....so I guess that means around 10%? I'm not 100% sure on these times, but I think the rest of his tests went like this:

+1 74
+2 48
+4 57

He didn't test after the 57 and I don't know what food he gave him so I don't know if he dropped really low or whatnot. He's alive so I guess that's what's really important!!

I'm surprised to not see a bounce yet, but maybe that's in store for tonight. I'm about to test him for +3 to see what's going on...I really hope the dose decrease sticks!!!

Re: 12/3 Lightning AMPS 106, +3 39, +5 31, +6.5 57

OK, we have a very interesting day going on here

AMPS 106
+3 39
+3.5 62
+5 31 (Took a nap from +3.5 to +5 so woke up to get this test)
+5.25 69
+6.5 57 (Took a nap from +5.25 to +6.5 so work up to get this test)

I've gotten 39's, 31's and am freaking out a little bit!! Lightning and I have been taking naps almost all day and I've been setting my alarm to get up and test/feed him. Can cats hypo in their sleep? It sounds dumb saying it, but I seriously wonder about this. Just now, Lightning was sleeping and he just looked super cute but then the position of his paws just freaked me out and when I started waking him up he just seemed out of it. So I'm sure I'm TOTALLY over-reacting about this behavior, if Thunder looked/acted like that I would just think it was cute, but for Lighting I don't know if it's something more. So I just tested him and he's only at 57, but that number is dropping from the 69 I got 45 mins ago. I've been giving 19% and it works for a bit, but then he drops again. But this means his body is doing what it's supposed to though right? Producing its own insulin? So I should stop freaking out right....just monitor him and make sure he stays at a good number....

I can't give advice but I want to reassure you although hypos can be dangerous it doesn't sound like he was having trouble. You are right, keep testing, feed if you need and retest. Have you read the low reading stickeys lately? I find I have to over and over.

looks like today is Lightning's turn! yesterday was Gracie! you will be busy for sure and all have to say is nailbite_smile nailbite_smile nailbite_smile
don't know about your question....i think that is why you would wake him to test and see where he is at...i really don't know and i've wondered that myself!

Thanks Kathy and Claudia....been quite a rollercoaster over here that's for sure!! Lightning is acting great considering, even got in a really good play session with Thunder and it was hilarious to watch!! Lightning was just chilling in his cat bed and Thunder decided to jump in it to! Then that's when the fun started I guess. Now its back to grooming and I'm sure another nap.

I have to run out for a few hours and although I don't usually feed anything from now until his PMPS. I'm thinking I might put a teeny tiny bit of food in his feeder so he gets a little something every hour until I'm back. He won't be used to it going off so who knows if he'll even hear it and eat it, but I think it will at least give me piece of mind until I'm back.

I would have done the same thing Pamela! He really earned that dosecrease last night, eh? Good luck with the new dose...hope he continues to get these greens....a little higher would be nice....but greens are so great to see. Good job!

oh my! what a day! those numbers are a little scary - glad you were there to watch Lightning.

You did well with him. With numbers that low I'd be waking him. Good luck with the new dose - Lightning certainly earned it.

The short and direct answer to your question is that yes, cats can hypo in their sleep and become comatose. I would not, underscore not, take a nap on a BG of 39. There is a very good chance that Lightning may have been surfing in the 30s for 2 hours. You do not want to have your cat in such low numbers for that long. Plus, you don't know how long it took to get his numbers above the 31 at +5. Numbers in the 30s require HC to get your cat into the 50s or 60s.

Please review this post on how to manage low numbers. It provides guidelines for how often to test.

Good luck with your dose decrease, Lightning! Pamela, this was quite a day for you and Lightning. It's good that you were able to keep your eye on him. Have a good evening and night with safe numbers.

Sienne, the nap was BEFORE the 39....he was 62 when we (he was right next to me) took a nap. And then we went to sleep again when he was 69. I by no means would let him surf the 30's knowingly! 60's were ok with me because I gave him 19% HC right before and we only slept for an hour an a half each time. So I'm pretty confident that he wasn't surfing those numbers for any long period of time. I'm just glad I was home because if I was still out of town and my boyfriend was at work, I would've come home to a not good situation that's for sure! I shutter to even THINK what would've happened if I wasn't around.

But it's good to know that they can hypo in their sleep....I usually will just let him sleep instead of testing (unless its at night and I figure I'm up, he can get up too!). But now that I know it could happen, I'll be sure to wake him whenever I feel like he needs a test.

PMPS was 101 and just tested +1 and still at 101.

Sorry if I misunderstood. I looked at your SS and had trouble reading the numbers. Just as an FYI, you do need to get in more tests after a number in the 30s. HC can cause the numbers to spike but the HC wears off fairly quickly. The result is that numbers bobble around and you can end up with them back where you started. You really need to see at least 2 rising or surfing numbers that aren't influenced by HC to know that it's OK to back off on testing. The link I posted previously outlines the process.
