Hi everyone,

As it's afternoon now, I though I'd better start today's condo for Angie. I was posting in yesterday's condo still this morning for some reason.

Angie is back from the vet again. They gave her a miralax enema and it worked pretty well straight away bringing out a "good sized hard lump" - she was constipated after all (like I told them!). They also found that she had a mild UTI (Thanks to Carl for that suggestion). They gave her an anti-biotic injection to help with that. I will get the results of the pancreatitis test tomorrow morning.

The vet was very kind and didn't charge for today's consult or hospitalisation because she thought those things ought to have been done yesterday.

Angie is much more comfortable already, after her enema - she's moving around again, jumping up on the chairs (being naughty again  ) and her appetite is back. I'll try some pumpkin in her food early next time I have any concerns.

My convert-a-vet project hasn't gone so well so far. There is a bit of resentment for me altering her insulin dose on my own. They also thought that I reduced it too fast and that it might be best for her to go back on 0.5 IU twice a day for a while to "stabilise" her. I told them that I disagreed - particularly in light of her low numbers on a 0.1 IU dose. They let it go and said that it would be fine as long as I kept an eye on her BG. I think that's a bit rich coming from those that spaced us out to 2 monthly curves on 1 IU! Anyway - they think I'm amazingly capable to be able to get BG tests from her and call it a tribute to her trust for me. They didn't believe that home testing wasn't that hard.

Thanks so much for all the care and vines that you have been giving us in these few days. I was really worried for her and thought it could be something very serious (paws crossed on the pancreatitis).

Woohoo! Glad to hear that Angie is being naughty again!

Do you know what antibiotic she got for her UTI? Paws crossed on negative results for the pancreatitis. So looks like you were right a couple of times, dosage and constipation. You think the vet would listen to you after that. Maybe they just aren't used to having clients who care enough about their cats to get really involved with their care and are so in tune with what is going on. I think a lot of us are only clients at their vets who do home testing. I was the first with mine. My vet didn't even know how to do ear testing.

I'm so glad to hear she is doing better. Did they do a cystocentesis to dx the UTI? A free catch sample will often have bacteria in it from contamination and not from an actual infection. Do you know the name of the A/B they gave her?

I'm starting to be a well-informed patient but I have a long way to go. I forgot to ask for the blood test results or what antibiotic they gave her. I've called them up and will pick up a copy tomorrow. The anti-biotic was an injection that's supposed to stay in her system for two weeks. I'll find out more tomorrow.

I didn't ask. Our old vet when we lived interstate (whom I loved) used to do that and I just assumed that they all did. I'll ask tomorrow.

Most of us stay away from those two week A/Bs because once they are in, you can't get them back out and quite often, it's much longer than two weeks that it stays in their system. If they gave her convenia, it's not the best choice for UTIs. It's more for skin infections.

Ah no! It seems like you have to know more than your vet to look after your cat! I'm learning the same thing with my health issues. The doctors have done the wrong thing so many times that I got myself educated and have had much better results telling them what I want them to do - they don't like that so much either but as I've been getting results my GP is letting me take the lead, specialist not so much.

Good night everyone.

Angie's activity didn't continue all day and she wouldn't eat her 3rd dinner. I'm hoping that the anti-biotics are effective in her case and that she feels better tomorrow. I'm really hoping that it's not pancreatitis.

Thanks everyone for your well wishes through her illness. I made some condo visits but particularly wanted to thank those here, who's cats are OTJ and are supporting and sharing their knowledge to help others - I couldn't visit your condos so I'll thank you here. Carl & Bob, Libby and Lucy, Bruce & Simon, and rhiannon and shadow - thanks very much.

Rhiannon - I had a rabbit called shadow when I was a child whom I used to take out for walks. We were very close! I love that name. :-D

(((Grace))) I am SOOO happy to read that Angie is feeling better today! Good on you for knowing your baby, even when everyone kept telling you she wasn't constipated. I am also very glad that they were able to catch the UTI!
