Gooood Morning LL,

I never expected to be here posting again (as the mom of a kitty with the 'dire beasties' I mean), but here I am.
Sebastian is a 13 year old male kitty that some of you may know from reading DCIN. He had been in foster care for over 3 years but his foster mom just couldn't keep him any longer-for his own good mostly. I had read about him for years but when Alex and Jackson were still with me it just wasn't possible for me to take in an older male. But with his situation being pretty dire, and my having two fur kids of only a year old each, and hearing that Sebastian gets along pretty well with people and other cats and as a bonus has been in remission for over 2 years well I had no reason NOT to adopt him. I fell in love with him via pictures and videos and stories anyway. So adopt him I did and within less than a week he integrated himself into my family-which surprises me considering that's he's been moved around a lot- and very much into my heart. He is where he is supposed to be.

HOWEVER, During his first week here he would get all excited for meals then he would just go and lie on the bed. After three days of this I began thinking that it was a little strange for a cat who was described as 'curious'. Then 3 nights in a row he peed large amounts outside of the litter box and the urine smelled sweetish (anyone who knows my nose knows it's never wrong). So out came the meter and it read 331. It wasn't stress. Once he got some insulin into him he was a new man. Friendlier, curious and out of the bedroom. He has had a blood work up and a fructosamine test which was 540 or 504 I don't remember but either way he has been diabetic (and untested which I didn't know) for a while.

I've been doing the best I can but I'm really not sure how to dose him. I think he can go into remission again. I've been giving him .25U Levemir (I was told he doesn't need more than that and from what I can see that seems to be around the correct area)... sometimes fat last night skinny but not higher than that. Those of you that remember Alex know that I have no experience with low dose kitties. A kind of big problem is that he doesn't like being tested so I try not to overdo it.

If anyone has any suggestions I'd truly appreciate it because otherwise he'll stay where he is forever :(

Sebastian has no other health issues and all p's are in order.

Have a good Caturday everyone!

Good Morning,

Bless you for adopting him. He is a very handsome fellow. The best of luck that you get him back into remission soon.

Terri

Back to basics, my dear! Lev and Lantus dosing are the same. If you adjust a dose, you need to give it 6 cycles to settle unless a reduction is indicated. Even a drop can make a difference. It also looks like you may be dosing based on the pre-shot. Remember, dosing is based on the nadir. So, do what you can to not dose hop.

Has Sebastian been to the vet? Any time a kitty falls out of remission, it's a good idea to have him vetted to make sure there's no infection or inflammation that's causing the numbers to rise. That increase in BG could be an early warning sign that something is "off." I'd also make sure he doesn't need a dental in case this hasn't been looked at.

Yep he has been to the vet-as soon as I realized his BG was high- and everything is normal. He had a dental this year. He's up to date on everything.

So...I shouldn't be afraid to shoot .25 (i guess that's where I'll start) even if he is like 84 at PS? I didn't have that with Alex very often so I don't have much experience.

Re: 12/28 Sebastian AMPS 213

You can always start at a smaller dose (e.g., 0.1u -- look in the New to the Group sticky for photos). It tends to be less nerve wracking if you start lower and work your way up. OTOH, if you're unsure, you know you can post and someone will be around to walk you through the options and to lend a hand (or support) if you need it.

Not sure. Going to read the stickies again. I came home at +7 today and he was at 68 but he would have usually had a snack at some point. That's still a pretty big drop for such a small amount of insulin. I may just do that. (Lower him I mean)

It is so weird going from a high dose kitty to a kitty that requires practically nothing. I feel strange loading the syringe. I almost feel like I'm giving him R cause of the amount. Weird

Thanks Amy! Sebastian is a GREAT cat! I'm lucky to have him!
I hope he's back OTJ soon! That'd really be cool. I have absolutely no experience knowing what that's like :-D
