Good Morning World! Welcome to our home!

DAKOTA
AMPS 548
+3 - 419

Altho' sweet Doc's bouncing off a low 136 last night, he's doing well. We're walking back up the dosing ladder again. I've given up sleeping thru the night anymore so usually get in at least 1 test nightly. His numbers suddenly began going up again with no signs of what might be causing it. That meant a trip to the vet for bloodwork. Unfortunately the bloodwork didn't show good things....he's got kidney/liver issues beginning. He's now on Epikiten to help support this - it has sugar in it so are also having to compensate for that. He seems to be feeling OK altho' we also went through a URI too....everyone shared it among themselves. Wish they'd stop that! We took a HUGE step yesterday - I changed our profile picture from KT to Dakota...sniff sniff...

It's been quite a few weeks since we posted - seems like every time I start, something happens and I never get it posted. By the time I get back to it, things have changed again.

Our biggest news - on Halloween, our small local dog rescue posted an emergency need for a foster for a small Shih Tzu/Chihuahua mix found near death, covered in sandburrs sticking in her skin, literally skin and bones. She was too weak to even push herself up to sit, could barely raise her head. Her eyes were matted shut, her feet were full of sores. BUT she was still willing to fight. They got her to the vet where she went into cardiac arrest. She was gone for about 4 minutes before they got her heart beating again. She weighed 7lbs, 4oz, not enough blood pressure to get a blood draw. They got the burrs out (they contain poison), started IV fluids and put her on heating pads. She has cataracts on both eyes and one eye with a horrible scratch/ulcer. When released from the vet after 4 days, she went to another foster home with medical training....who promptly had a family emergency. The vet told them to ask if we'd take her for a short term foster even tho' we're not approved, they knew they could trust us to handle her medical needs. We scooted over the gates creating a place for her with our 2 small 'main house' dogs, piled it with warm blankets, put heater there and picked her up Nov 7th. She was SO skinny, every bone showed, her eye was still swollen and leaky, she was still weak but could sit and walk slowly....but her tail still wagged. We were supplementing her food with 2 different meds with high calories and plenty of vitamins/minerals in it. Within a week, she could walk fairly well altho' we could tell her hips/back hurt. Started her on pain meds, that helped tremendously. She slowly regained weight, finally had blood work done early December. Other than discovering she was hypothyroid, all seems well now. Found the cause of her hip/back pain - she's had a fractured pelvis that wasn't treated in the past leaving one side quite forward of the other. We also discovered by her actions that she's been raised with cats - thinks she's a cat too, just ignored them but was leary of dogs. When she'd get upset, she'd HISS! After 6 weeks, she weighed 10 lbs, loved being here, is a HUGE daddy's girl and sparkled everywhere she went. Even the cats loved on her...yep, can we say 'FOSTER FAILURE'? She loves to wear sweaters, loves to cuddle and sleeps in Daddy's lap when given a chance. She climbs baby gates, has to be 'burped' after eating, isn't a young dog, has bald spots, has to be let out to potty in the middle of the night...and is loved beyond measure. She hates that she can't sleep with us, has to sleep with Sassy/Sasha - too many cats already claiming bed spots. We have to put up double baby gates with solid wall between or she'll climb over falling off the other side.

My dad is still slowly going downhill but he's doing 'acceptable' for end stage Parkinson's. He sleeps quite a bit due to meds but that's truly a blessing. He can no longer take care of his needs so has to have lots of help with everything. He'll never improve but he does have 3-4 hours each morning that Mother visits, they still try to do simple things together. He still asks to go home but the confusion is getting worse - 'home' is now 40 acres somewhere in Oklahoma where he grows...something - he can't remember what he grows but 'it's pretty'.

Our christmas was SO quiet this year - no family celebration for the first time. We stayed home, something we've not done in 23 years.

Our furnace finally kicked the bucket - we now have free-standing heater and oil radiators throughout the house and outlaying areas. So far it's working well altho' our electric bill is higher. As if that wasn't enough, our sleep number airbed blew it's bladder - had to buy a new mattress. Regular mattresses are awfully uncomfortable!

It's only taken me almost 5 hours to finish this! Classic example of ....something happens... :)

BIG HUGS to all that visit today! I visit often to check on everyone but rarely have time to actually post. Thoughts and prayers for all needing them especially those with new kitty shaped holes in their hearts.

DANCE WITH US! It's a nasty rainy soon-to-be snowy day but we're still DANCING!

Thanks, as I'm one of the ones with the kitty shaped hole :(
That was a big step changing your avatar. I don't even know remember how I did the first one haha..

What is your new dog who thinks she's a cat's name? You are always so generous. Big Hugs to you.

We had a quiet Christmas here too. I'm glad your dad is hanging in there.

How come I can't see Dakota's ss?

Dyana, you've been in our prayers ever since sweet boy crossed. That hole takes a long time to fill back up...

I did forget to add her name didn't I?! She was 'Winnie' when she arrived, ugly name for her - she's now 'Penny' as in 'Penny from Heaven'.

I don't know why you can't see Doc's ss...I see it when I click on link. I don't know how to check it.

HUGS and prayers continue for your heart....

Thanks for visiting. Enjoyed reading your condo. Such a wonderful thing you did for that dog. She seems so happy in your home. are you going to keep him/her? Glad your Dad is doing o.k.
Have a good day.
Paula & kitty Michael
P.S. Just read her name. Penny is a beautiful name! So glad you are keeping her. She deserves a really good home after what she has been thru.

Here's what she looked like when she arrived - she'd slowly pushed herself up to sitting position:

Here's what she looked like 2 weeks later on an outside potty trip:

She looks much better in the second photo.
Before, I could see the 2013 spreadsheet, but there was nothing (all blank from line 3 on) in the 2014 one.
This time, I swear I briefly saw a spreadsheet and then it was gone. I tried again, and now I am getting "Processing request..." I now have two of these attempts going and am watching the little circle thingys go round and round.
It's probably just me, or my over loaded computer.

Hi Lyresa!!

Happy to hear from you! Wish Dakota was doing better for you, but as we all know, our kitties don't like to make things easy on us!

Penny is adorable! Being a veteran of the "Foster Failure club", we really never know which ones will worm their way deep enough in our hearts to become a permanent member of the family, but it sure sounds like Penny knew a good thing when she found it! What's not to love? She might not have been the prettiest dog in the pack when she came to you, but that's not her fault and with your loving care, of course she's going to do wonderfully!

Best wishes for the New Year for you and your furry little family!

Lyresa, I loved reading your post -- Yay for Foster Failures! Penny is adorable and it is hilarious that she hisses! I am sorry Doc is having some trouble lately but at least he is coming down a little for you from the AMPS.

I'm sorry to read about your dad. Parkinson's Disease is a tough one :( Is he in a nursing home?

Big hugs to you and your crew!

Lyresa, you are so wonderful to take in Penny. You have such a big heart. I hope you can get Dakota back on track with his numbers and the new meds help his kidney/liver issues. I'm so sorry about your dad. Sending prayers and hugs.

Lyresa - it's good to see a post from you. I noticed the new avatar - that must have been hard.

I always love the stories of your animals. Your failures are so lucky. Penny is looking so cute now.

Hey Doc - come on down, lagoon has requested your presence.

Lyresa, you are an amazing bean! Penny is one lucky pup.
We are so sorry to hear that Dakota is having health issues and hope that you can find answers and meds that will help.
It is a big step to change avatars, but Doc is very handsome. And KT is still there for all of us, too, in his profile. By the way, I was able to access Doc's spreadsheet, but a weird thing happened: the spreadsheet that came up was the one that is editable. And my name--not yours-- was in the upper right-hand corner. In other words, I could have edited Doc's SS!! I think you have to look into this. Perhaps ask Marje for help. She is an expert on setting up spreadsheets. The spreadsheet that the link in your signature takes others to should be read-only and it does not have all the editing tools at the top of the sheet.

Continuing to send prayers and vines to your dad. My father struggled with Parkinson's, too, but he was in an earlier stage of the disease when he passed away (from pneumonia).

Good luck with your heat this winter! Have you considered monitor heat? Heat monitors are very popular here in the cold North Country. They can run on kerosene or propane (I believe; and the tanks are outside the building).

Hugs and scritches,

Ella & Rusty

I love that name Lucky Penny and she sure is one lucky little lady to have found a Furever home with you- bless your sweet heart Lyresa!! Sorry to hear Doc needs the extra meds and his BG is being affected- it's always a balancing act. Has his diet had to change as well? unfortunately, foods for diebetics are not the best for kidney issues.

Has your mother found any sort of support group for dealing with your dad's Parkinson's? I feel so badly for you all, my FIL had it for 15 years, the end is very difficult- big hugs for all of you!! Does your local hospital have Hospice at all? They were helpful for us. At the end, FIL's speech was down to about 5-10 words that he could say, GO HOME was about it for that last few months. Never could figure out if he meant for us to go home, or he wanted to go home...I am keeping you and your mom and dad in my prayers!

I can see Doc's ss ok. Have you thought about increasing his dose? I see that little blue spot in there last night . . .

nice to see you, lyresa. You've got so much going on and you are such a blessing to others through all of it. :)

Missed answering your question Georgia - yes, Dad is in a nursing home, been there for about 3 months now. Yep, Parkinson's is tough - add Alzheimer's and COPD to the mix, it's doubly bad. It's so tough to watch him slowly lose everything.

Just catching up but wanted to see how things are in OK.

If I can look at any labs for Doc, please PM me. When I look at Doc's SS, it's view only...I can't edit it. But if you want me to check the settings just to be sure, PM me.

Aaah....Penny is a lucky Penny! Your heart is bigger than TX, Lyresa and we see so blessed you are part of our family!
