We are back from the vet in Albuquerque.

The vet did not see it as necessary to do an ultrasound. She looked at the xray I had and the radiologist there wanted another xray so they took
Shadow and positioned her better to get a better view than the xray we had which was skewed a little sideways...
They believe the pelvis/femur to be severe osteoarthritis on her left hip. And moderate osteo on her right hip.
They "could" go in and clean it up, but they wouldn't be able to get to the little spurs.
She didn't feel that it was worth the effort as it would be pretty intense recovery and traumatic surgery again to be unable to get it all out.

So Whew! on that front.

The 1cm firm but moveable mass on her tail didn't aspirate well. They said "Fine needle aspirate of the tail mass indicates an epithelial origin with a low level of malignancy."
Recommend excision and biopsy.

So I have already called my vet here, and scheduled surgery for Jan 20.... and asked them if they could do a dental too since she will already be under.
The tumor on her tail has not attached itself to the bone so hopefully it's a pretty quick excision giving them some time to work on teeth if needed.
She does have a bit of tartar buildup and it's good to get those dental xrays on her with her resorptive lesion problem.
This will be her 8th surgery thus far in life.

So not the best news BUT .... I might not have caught that bump on her tail without the leg/pelvis issue and it could have become something
serious. We don't know how long it's been there or if it's very recent. Shadow does not let me touch her butt without clawing my head.

waiting on a package of fish oil and cosequin ( throwing out the dasuquin) and continued therapy with Adequan and tiny dose of Bupe ....
were all recommended to address her arthritic pains.

Shadow is greatly relieved to be home. She was allowed out of her carrier for the 1 1/2 hour ride there and back and laid on the passenger floor board
under a tent fabric ( my nightgown) to hide under. She spoke often as she usually does....
Why ? Why? Why am I in the car? Don't you know I don't want to go to the vet..... again?

Thank you everyone for the prayers. They surely are the reason for the better prognosis.
I am very much relieved since the vet here had said if there were cancer in her hip, it wouldn't be operable. ( you can't amputate a pelvis)

Always praying for all beans and kitty friends here....

Overall, good news. Send vines for a good biopsy/ result! I know you are both so happy to be home again. cat_pet_icon cat_pet_icon cat_pet_icon :YMHUG: :YMHUG: :YMHUG: :YMHUG:

Although I'm sure the arthritis is uncomfortable for Shadow, this is a very good report! I'm sure you will find the right balance of meds to keep her as comfortable as possible. We'll continue to send prayers for a clean biopsy!!! Enjoy a relaxing evening with your girl :YMHUG: :YMHUG: :YMHUG: !

That's really good to hear, Rhiannon! Paws crossed for a positive result on the biopsy as well. I hope the cosequin and fish oil work as well :-D Give Shadow some hugs and scritches from me :-D

I agree. Overall that is a good report. I hope you can find the right balance of fish oil and meds to keep her comfortable. Sending prayers for a good biopsy and test results. :YMHUG: :YMHUG:

I was waiting for the vet report. Overall it was a good report. WE will continue to pray for Shadow for pain relief and a good report on the biopsy.

Great news on the "no cancer"!! I know we were all waiting and worrying along with you. nailbite_smile

I feel for Shadow with the arthritis, but with the power of LL behind her and such a wonderful and caring bean, I'm sure she will be able to be made comfortable with the right combo of meds.

You can breathe now Rhiannon!! :-D

Great news with the no cancer :-D
And hopefully the arthritis can be treated some.
You must be feeling quite relieved
Shadow has been thru a lot in her life and what a Trooper she is cat_pet_icon
Enjoy your night Rhiannon!

Pretty good vetty report, considering the alternatives. I'm glad to hear you've got the "it's gonna just be a cyst" (think positive) removal scheduled. Paws crossed that's the last vetty visit for a while for poor Missy Shadow.

Well, not too bad considering the alternatives. I hope you are breathing easier now that this vetty visit is over. Sounds like you've taken the reigns yet again and are getting Shadow in to get the lump taken care of. Good thing to get the teeth done too. I wish our kitties would understand that the car ride is really for their benefit and to make sure they are healthy, but they just don't like it.

Thanks for the update and hopefully things will settle down for you and Shadow. Sending peaceful & relaxing vines to your household.

Re: 12/26 Shadow - uncertainty

I was feeling better about it all until my dd's fiancé talked about the possibility of her needing her tail chopped. nailbite_smile
I think I'd like my local vet (the one who would do the surgery) to check it out as soon as he can this coming week and he can determine if the surgery
should happen asap.

They said "Fine needle aspirate of the tail mass indicates an epithelial origin with a low level of malignancy."
Recommend excision and biopsy.

I just don't know what that means....

Shadow sure likes to grow little things to get lopped off. :?

Epithelial is just a fancy word for one of the normal types of tissue in the body..the others are Connective, Muscular and Nervous tissue

Low level of malignancy means most samples that look like Shadows have only a small chance of being cancer....so unless the biopsy report says something different after it's excised, that's good news! It'd be bad news if it was indicative of high levels of malignancy

We're all still praying for Shadow...and losing a little tail is a fair trade for saving her life..IF it's even necessary

I think dd's fiancé had his sense of tact lopped off! Ignore him! It's a low chance of cancer, don't let him get to you! cat(2)_steam

Hi Rhiannon,
All in all, this is a good report. Don't worry about things that may not even materialize.

Sending all sorts of vines for Shadow's well being.

Hugs and scritches,

Ella & Rusty
