Re: 12/24 Mikey +6.5/258 AMPS 305 +2/307

Based on his numbers and there have been 6 cycles still high does this call for another increase? I am not sure if I am supposed to base the 6 cycle mark from the new dose or not? I know Marje, you mentioned it might take a cycle or so to see if the pen makes any difference.

Any other suggestions that I might need to change/start to help him get back into at least the blues?

I was reading in another condo about food spikes. Could I be feeding him too much throughout the day? I feed him almost every 2-3 hours unless he is super tired and stays sleeping longer.

sorry...
I meant i was bumping your post up to the top of the forum so more folks would see it and give you some input :-D

Happy holidays!

there aren't many folks on the forum today, so if you don't get answers ...
you might put the word "question" in the subject line of your first post to get more eyes.

Re: 12/24 Mikey QUESTION +6.5/258 AMPS 305 +2/307

Hi Jennifer:

Wow....it sure looks like he could use another .25u increase tonight. I've asked Sienne to also look at his SS and see if she has any ideas.

One suggestion I can make is to try and be sure his meals are all in him before his nadir if you can. You want to try and not feed him at or after his nadir. Alot of folks feed at PS, +1, +2, +3 and that front loads the food to work with
the insulin and keeps from slowing it down later in the cycle.

Merry Christmas!

Re: 12/24 Mikey QUESTION +6.5/258 AMPS 305 +2/307

Basically, you want to evaluate the effect of your current dose after 3 days/6 cycles. If you're not seeing good numbers you increase. There are other factors that may cause you to not increase, such as a bounce, but the exceptions aside, you would increase after 3 days.

Generally, you see a food spike after you shoot (your +1) because there's minimal insulin to offset the effect of food. That early in the cycle, the Lantus hasn't started to have an effect. Later in the cycle, food may help to flatten the curve. I think it's fine to feed multiple small meals. It's easier on the pancreas.

Re: 12/24 Mikey QUESTION +6.5/258 AMPS 305 +2/307

To be honest I was feeding him more food less frequently when i first got him and he was always hungry that's why I started the less food more frequently. It seems to keep him more "stable". He gets this lip quiver when he is really hungry and he doesn't get it so much if I feed him every 2-3 hours. I myself eat that frequently throughout the day, for me it just helps me digest easier. Not sure that matters in cats. Marge said

. Can you tell from his SS when his Nadir's are? Is it the same time everyday? I don't always test the same times so how can I be sure when the nadir is? Does it change from day to day, cycle to cycle or is it always +6?

I'm hoping once the holidays are over I can get into a better routine with him. I have not been testing him as much as I would like it's just been too hectic to be home and I've been leaving him food in the timer instead. he also has a dental for Feb. 1 so that might help as well.

I don't want to increase him tonight/tomorrow because I won't be home. I can increase tomorrow night or monday morning if you think I should. I would then increase to 2.25?

Re: 12/24 Mikey QUESTION +6.5/258 AMPS 305 +2/307

The nadir is not a fixed point -- it can shift around. Generally, it looks like Mikey's nadir is close to +6 but this can change. For many cats, it's best to not feed after nadir since that's when the effect of the insulin is beginning to wane. Feeding during that time may cause numbers to rise since there's less insulin available to offest the effect of food.
