She is only getting that 3.33% food, we haven't been able to find any other brands yet that are good in terms of carbs. The other brands we have found that are under 10% are supplementary foods and not complete..:(

Duration means the length of time insulin continues to lower glucose. It's not that the insulin is going bad. It just means that it may not be lasting 12 hours.

Bouncing happens when there is a steep drop between PS and onset or BGs kitty is not used to.

For example Mia's 12/21 AMPS was 376 and her +2 dropped 90ish points then another 170 point drop at +4. Similarly 12/22 AMPS was 360. The next test at +2 was a 131 point drop to 229 and +4 was down to greens . IMO (in my opinion) those steep drops triggered a bounce in the PM cycles.

I'm going to read through all your previous condos and see what others have said and suggested so you don't have to keep repeating yourself about food etc :).

I'm going to tag some other experienced members to see if they have anything to add.

@Angela & Cleo Oh ok! Thanks for explaining :bighug: So it has to do with the insulin itself? And when changing to a new/fresh pen it would go back to its "regular" duration? Or am I still misunderstanding?

I totally agree that those big drops make sense in terms of causing a bounce!

No, duration has nothing to do with the individual container of insulin. It has to do with how Mia's body is using it.

There are several things that can shorten duration. One is feeding after nadir, the low point of the cycle. At nadir, the insulin effect is at it's strongest, and it starts to fade after that. That's why we get those curves down then back up. If you feed after nadir, the insulin effect is already fading away and carbs after that make it fade away faster. Someone described the time after nadir to me like being in a car with your foot off the gas pedal, coasting towards a stop sign (the next preshot). If you add carbs, it's like tapping your foot on the brake. You'll stop earlier and won't reach the destination. Those +8 and +9 feeding times may be part of the issue. They can help a kitty on really tiny doses that look like they are almost at remission, but might not be a good idea for Mia now.

Another thing that can shorten duration is too low an insulin dose. It just doesn't have the ability to last all cycle.

@Wendy&Neko thank you for the explanation! Makes sense :) Do you think this is what's happening with Mia? Or do you think her evening cycles have been higher due to bouncing? So should I try giving her all her meals by +6 and then nothing until she is due for her next insulin dose?

I had been recommended in my main forum thread to try giving her some food at +8 or similar to see if it might avoid her having such high preshot numbers as it could trigger her pancreas to produce some insulin. So with the dose increase she has had, that is no longer recommended?
 
Her current numbers show that she's not looking like a kitty for whom the +8/+9 meal would work. I'd want to see mostly green, and a bit of blues on 0.1 units or less. She could also be bouncing.

@Wendy&Neko ok will stop the late meals then. I have usually given her a small meal at around +9.5 before removing the food for 2 hours before her shot. So I should stop doing that too?

No food after +6?
