China's feeling good this morning and was even really interested in trying her raw again, so I gave her some mixed in with some Fancy Feast. Since the raw does require a little chewing (there's ground bone but no chunks or slivers) and she's feeling like she can handle it, I'm kind of letting her make the decision what she feels like eating. Got a pretty good look inside her mouth last night and it looks AWESOME...a little sparse in the tooth department, but no redness, inflammation or signs of infection or other problems. I'm so glad I went ahead and went with my gut and took her to a better equipped vet facility.

Cost more than I'd been told (by over $100) but I think the "quote" was based on 1 extraction, which was all I'd been told by the vet down here that she needed...don't EVER do a dental without x-rays...I can see now it would have been pretty much useless and would just have had to be repeated very soon due to the FORL

Now for my Bupe question, IF anyone can answer it. I was given oral syringes, which have been REALLY hard to get into her (and I can't blame her since I'm trying to force a foreign object into an already small and very tender area). Sienne said it can be given sub q (which I wish I'd known sooner) and I was looking online overnight to see what I could find. It LOOKS like the same medication may be used for both oral use, sub q, and IM and at pretty much the same doses!

Would it be possible to just put a needle on the end of the pre-filled syringe and give it sub q? Curious now!

Not planning on going out anywhere today...too much ice out there and my ice skates are in the shop being sharpened :lol:

I have no answers on the bupe, hopefully someone with experience will chime in soon. So glad China is feeling good and wanting her fuds!
Cleo's dental was done at my regular vet with NO x-rays. If it gets to the point where it looks like she will need another, I will find a specialist who does the x-rays as part of the dental~

It's the same drug -- oral or injection. However, talk to your vet. Bupe is not a trivial drug (neither is insulin). See what the vet has to say. In all likelihood, the bulk of any vet's clientele do not have diabetic cats and they think giving an injection would be horrible so vets give oral meds. The other issue is you don't know if you need a different sized needle. When I had injectible bupe, the syringe was long and thick.

Besides the bupe question, I've had some others I've been meaning to ask but kept forgetting, so if you have any answers or suggestions, throw them out there!

1. I've read about using a dental rinse or gel, as well as toothpaste/brushing. I don't think I'd ever get China to accept the brushing, but MAYBE a rinse/gel...For those of you that have used them, what kind do you use? Brand, and rinse or gel?

2. Still trying to figure out what to do with the raw on an ongoing basis. The Primal Frozen Raw is somewhat available, but only at one store over 75 miles away. I do go to that area every 3 weeks for my pain pump refills, but trying to keep at least a 3 week supply in my freezer might be a tight fit..if possible. The only other option (nearby) is FreshPet, but the Food Chart notes don't seem to think much of it...and it looks like the only one under 10% is a semi-moist type. Opinions of the FreshPet?
The other "raw" option is Nature's Variety, Instinct (frozen) which I have a sample bag of (Chicken, 12 "medallions") that I'll try later with China after we're through with the rest of the Primal trial pack flavors. Kind of expensive for my budget and again, storage space is a problem...and not available closer than 75 miles away.

I know I had more questions, but at the moment, can't remember them (I really should start writing them down as I think of them), but would appreciate any thoughts on the above.

China did eat another whole nugget of the Primal Turkey (0%) at +6, but it does seem important to make sure she's getting her bupe or she doesn't want to eat much of anything, raw, canned or baby food. I am pleased to see a GREEN at +6 again though!!! :mrgreen:

3. Remembered another! Has anyone ever heard of or tried "I and Love and You" canned food? I've just never seen it or heard of it before, and although it does have some fruits & veggies, they're lower on the ingredient list. I'm no good at the conversion, so have no idea on the carb value. I and Love and You canned cat food (what a strange name!...and they have raw DOG, but I guess no raw cat food)

The canned food only provides information about the guaranteed analysis. The approximate amount of carbs is 5%. However, you really need to contact the manufacturer and ask for the "as fed" analysis. The latter is the only way to get the real carb numbers.

I'll see what I can get them to tell me Sienne...I've called a few companies and you'd think that information has something to do with national security the way they protect it! Not that I'm considering another diet change, I just happened to notice it when I was looking online for "raw diets" at Petco...and even though I specified "cat", their dog raw popped up and then I noticed they had canned.

Finally getting some nicer numbers for China this afternoon/tonight! Hopefully this is the beginning of better things to come!

You can use chlorihexidine gel but you need to apply any gel with your finger or qtip. I took Gracie to a vet dentist and he said putting a bit of CET toothpaste on a qtip and rubbing it along the teeth/gum interface worked just as well as anything.

You'd have to call the company and get the as feds or dry matter basis for protein, fat, moisture, fiber, ash and then we can calculate the rest.

I see the CET has dextrose as an ingredient...is it so little (and you use so little) that it doesn't matter?

I'll see what I can find out about the food..hopefully they won't think that information is some big national security issue and refuse to give it out!

Make sure with the raw foods that they are formulated for cats. The dog food doesn't contain taurine which is essential for a cat. There's a brand that Whole Foods is carrying that they say you can give a cat but I couldn't find taurine in it.
 
I've used bupe orally. I don't open Max!s mouth. I drip a little on the guns or cheek. I don't know whether the same med is used as an injectable but if it can there would be no reason to use a thick needle. An insulin one would work. Can you call an ER and ask? I hope China feels better.
