Decent number this morning. I am a bit surprised he didn't decide to laugh at me and throw me a super low number, knowing I wouldn't be able to shoot it. Maybe he is saving that for tomorrow?

Vet tonight to recheck for a UTI. I don't know what else to be looking for at this point, like I said in yesterday's condo, other than the meowing in the box, he seems just fine. His arthritis is making him a little stiff, but I am thinking that has to do with the change in temp....it is currently 14 degrees, which is a warm front compared to the last few days. The pain in his meow is just heartbreaking, but then he comes back upstairs like nothing has happened, so its just so hard to tell.

It is really difficult to get up and go to TBP after having a 5 day weekend....but I must, how else am I gonna be paying for these vet bills? lol

I hope everyone has a good day and if you have a few vines to spare to throw Skooter's way, they would be much appreciated...

Re: 12/2 Skooter AMPS 124 - VET today

Sending tons of vetty vines for Skooter today. One of my civvies sometimes meows when he's in the box, too, but then acts like nothing is wrong...and nothing has ever shown up either. I know kitties have idiopathic cystitis, too....the bladder contracts in a way that mimics the symptoms of a UTI without there actually being a UTI. Or maybe/hopefully it's just a new behavior for Skooter?

Nice AMPS...surf safely, Skooter!

Re: 12/2 Skooter AMPS 124 - VET today

I assume he is actually peeing (??) If he is staining with no urine output, he could be blocked.

Re: 12/2 Skooter AMPS 124 - VET today

Yes he is actually peeing and then he acts as if he wasn't meowing at all.

One of the nurses at work said he could have bladder spasisms, and if that is the case, there is a medication they can give him for that. NOt sure what it is or how it would effect the other medications he is on.

Lots of light for a good vetty report.

Re: 12/2 Skooter AMPS 124 +10.25 99 PMPS 145 +2 99 - VET ???

Molly, Max went through a period where he meowed in the box as well. He didn't have an infection either. I have no idea what it was all about. He's been much less vocal lately. I wonder how they tell if if is spasms?

Back from the vet....update and new questions.....

So they did a urine test and that came back clean/normal/nothing that raised even a small red flag. She brought him back in the room where he proceeded to go right into his kennel and start peeing after they took their sample. So my vet being my vet, got down and laid on the floor and watched him go, she said she was very impressed with the stream he had (such a proud momma moment for me lol) and the proceeded to pull my hissy boy out as he tried to then lay in it. ohmygod_smile (proud momma moment number two lol).....

She is thinking it may be his arthritis acting up as he is a little stiff going up and down the stairs, he is not meowing EVERY time he goes, his urine came back normal and he has a good healthy "stream". Also because the only symptom he has is the meowing in the LB. I said I was fine with it at first, but when it got to the point it made ME want to cry because it sounded so painful, I had to bring him in. SHe said at this point, she is not concerned about anything like cancer or a blockage of any kind (thank goodness)

When I walked in the clinic I said, "Yup, the overprotective paranoid momma is back!"

Apparently they have a new vet tech and the new vet tech got scared by Skooter. He tends to talk a good game of hissing and stuff, but he is just that, all talk. The entire staff knows that about him and they absolutely adore him. So the new tech was back there helping the vet and she said she didn't want to let go because she thought Skooter would go for the vet. Dr. S and the rest of the techs just started laughing and said, that is our Skooter. They also printed out his spreadsheet to show one of the new vet techs, and she was very impressed with the notes, how often I tested and the spreadsheet in general :)

Sooooooo, now to what the action plan is for lil dude. He has lost almost a pound since Aug 30th, so she said she wanted him eating between 252 and 300/day....which will be about a can and a half of 5.5oz NV chick. She said it is a delicate line because we don't want him to gain TOO much, but as cats get older, they can be more difficult to keep weight on them.

She gave me a 10 day sample of cosequin to try. She wants to see if this effects his BG too much, so after 10 days we will see where he is at....
QUESTION ONE: Does the cosequin need to be given at any particular time in a cycle or does it not matter?
She also gave me I think 10 syringes of bupe. She said it is very strong (which I know from what you all have said) and she is hoping it will be a very short thing, but hoping to jump start him feeling better, if it is due to pain.
QUESTION TWO: Basically the same as the other, when is this given in relation to a cycle?
She did suggest to wait until a cycle I will be home to monitor the first time I give the bupe to see how he reacts to it. So I am planning on tomorrow night.

She did mention that gabapentin as a different option, but I can't remember if that was in place of the cosequin or the bupe, I ***THINK*** it was in place of the cosequin.
QUESTION THREE: I have not yet done any research on this as I am exhausted --- I didn't realize how nervous/scared I was about this appointment until I was able to come home and just relax --- so does anyone have any experience or thoughts on using the gabapentin?

Thank you everyone for all the vines and well wishes....it sure means a lot to me and my Skooterboy :)

Re: 12/2 Skooter PMPS 145 +2 99 +3 79 - VET ???S

If you are just using cosequin capsules, it shouldn't raise his BG and there's no specific time you need to give it in relation to his insulin. He might eat it in his food if you open the capsule and pour it on there. I used it for Gracie's bladder issues and it didn't really do anything positive for her but ECID.

The bupe is the kind you just put in the cheek pouch? I'd just give it at a time that is separate from food. If he's lethargic or sleepy, you might need to back the dose down.

I've used gabapentin in two cats. They had no side effects. But gabapenin is for nerve pain and if he just has arthritis and no nerve pain, it's not likely to do alot. If you are having any meds compounded into a liquid, just be sure they do not use any sweetners....not even artificial ones like maltodextrin.

Sending many healing vines for Skooter.

Sending vines for Skooter's joints. Nice on the bloodwork results. :-D

Neko has arthopathy as a result of her acromegaly, and it's a type of arthritis. Between her and a previous cat I adopted as a senior, I've learned more than I want to about arthritis lately. If Skooter can handle it, another good thing to add to his diet is fish oil. It's an anti-inflammatory. Neko gets some with each of her AM and PM main meals. She isn't getting Cosequin (the civie is for his urinary tract issues) but is getting something that is like Cosequin and more. They just get sprinkled on the wet food. Another supplement I started recently is Hyaflex which is an oral version of hyaluronic acid. You may want to talk to your vet about Adequan, which is an injectable. My Buster (GA) greatly improved on the Canadian version of Adequan which is called Cartrophen. Neko is also on Cartrophen. All of these previous things mentioned deal with trying to improve the condition of the joints themselves. Next step for Neko was moving onto the pain meds. She gets bupe twice daily. I get it compounded chicken flavour - I give it after dinner. I also tried gabapentin, and it did nothing for Neko. Pain meds seem to be a bit of ECID thing. The other thing I'm doing for Neko is acupuncture every 3-4 weeks. It does give her relief. She jumps up on chairs more after her sessions. And lastly, I got Neko a memory foam bed which she really loves.

The Poo Patrol (Chief Inspector Crapdash and Detective Poo) are so pleased to read of Skooter's strong stream! Poo patrol can cross over to anything P related of the body fluid variety.

We give cosequin to our civvie Tillie, who has arthritis. We recently had to increase a bit because we realized we were not giving her enough for her weight and her symptoms had increased. We mix it in with a bit of yogurt and she loves it. It is her morning treat and she will demand it, if MamaBean is running behind. We justed added in the omega 3 fish oil and TT has been on both for a couple of weeks now. She is playing more, jumping up on things and occasionally takes a mad dash down the hall when she gets so very excited playing with "da bird".

We also used adequan with Zener for some hip arthritis. It helped quite a bit in the beginning, but as the pain became more related to his GI issues, the time frame for the adequan to help was only 24-48 hours. Liz did the injections at home, and it was every other week.

We are so proud of Scooter's peeing excellence!
