Hi Jill. Giving Buprenorphine in food isn’t the right way to give it. Does your vet know that you are giving it that way? The thing is that Buprenorphine is very poorly absorbed in the GI tract. It is absorbed through mucus membranes in the mouth. So when giving Bupe you are supposed to take the sal oral syringe and sip it into the cheek pouch of the kitty. It needs to get into the gums or the inside of her cheeks to be properly absorbed.

Buprenorphine can also be compounded into a transdermal gel.

I think I asked if it was ok and she said yes but I will ask again today and also ask about the gel (ear?) Jade hates being given oral meds. Reacts like I've poisoned her with the head shaking and drooling.

Thank you for that info!

Yes. I remember that about Jade! Giving bupe is one of the easier ones (easier than pills or nasty liquid - they don’t seem to mind the taste and the volume of liquid is very small.). But she probably thought… “oh well, at least a little bit may be absorbed.” It’s better than nothing may be what she was thinking.

I’m so sorry to read about Jade today. I missed yesterday as I was out a lot and got my hair done. :bighug: I hope the ultrasound is being done by a Board Certified Radiology or at last a Board Certified internist. Who preforms it makes all the difference.

Bupe needs to be sprinkled on the gums. They say on the cheek pocket but try that on a cat all the time. The guns work fine. You will see she’s gotten it by looking at her eyes.

She has quite the buzz. She’s still trembling tho. Poor baby. The bupe is liquid and in pre-measured syringe. I gave her twice as much gabepentin and half the amount of bupe. She has a very hard time recovering from being sedated. She is back getting shaved and prepped. I feel so guilty.

Don’t you feel guilty. You have been doing everything right. I hope they don’t find anything alarming and it’s a kidney infection. :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

I just hope somewhere in her sweet cat soul that she knows that as well. She looks like I’ve abandoned her and it hurts me to my core.

We are back. Thanks for all the good vibes sent our way. Jade is zonked out. Her Ultrasound results will be in next week. I had the option of having them sent out and read today( more $$$$) but the Dr. said that she didn’t see anything that would indicate an emergency and that having them sent out and read in the next few days would be ok.
She said that giving the Bupe in her food is also ok. I will continue that, the antibiotics and the urethra relaxer med until I get the results back. She said that if Jade has a kidney infection, the rx will work for that as well as an ongoing UTI.
She peed while she was there and no ketones detected. Yaaaa!! So, we will just have to wait and see. My in home vet thinks this is cystitis and that it’s pretty common for cats with diabetes . Says stress brings it on and I’m pretty sure she thinks me testing her is part of the reason she’s stressed/ having these episodes. Jades urine still has a slight bit of a pink tinge but not like last night.

Also, after her meds, I will start putting Cosequin and Wellactin into her food as supplements to see
if it helps. I do have the D-Mannose but my in home vet says not to use it ( go figure) If the ones she did recommend don’t help, I absolutely will try the D-Mannose though.

Be careful that you don’t cause food aversions.
She’s taken both before. If she doesn’t eat the food it’s in, I’ll try something else ( the D-Mannose and probiotic) and see how that goes. She’s pretty good about eating her wet food when stuff is mixed in(knock on wood!).It’s when it has to be put directly into her mouth that she flips out. She doesn’t like have anything “done” to her. Not picked up, carried, crated, given meds etc….

If she does have a kidney infection then antibiotics should be continued for at least 30 days. That is important. I am glad that the vet thought there was nothing in there to warrant emergency treatment.

Well just make sure that when she completes he course of antibiotics that you recheck her white count about ten days later to make sure her white count stays down.

And in the midst of all this “helpful information” I don’t want to forget to say how much I really care about Jade. Don’t forget, I am here if you need me.
