Day 3 on 3 unit dose. I’m adding 1/4 tsp 9.25% in her main meal & snacks at +1,2,3 am and pm to prevent early fast hard dives. Food experiment.
She saw some dips to mid to upper greens (on that Libre, so higher on a handheld meter) yesterday both cycles.

**Still biting her tee shirt on both shoulders/back area.
I give injection on left in am and on right in pm.
Wondering if the vicinity of where insulin injections are given may be itchy or bothers her, so she bites???
Been going on for months.
Could the Lantus make her itchy in those areas? (always trying to figure out what’s going on).
She takes Zyrtec 5mg, Seasonal Allergy from Animal Essentials.

Could it be the Libre that irritates her? Is there glue to hold it in place (I am allergic to latex and I react to glues, I had a very bad reaction both times during labor because of the monitor, and the glue on the protection around the catheter, for example.)?

Pretty in pink yet again. Ditch the girlie colors and come down to the beach Ivy.

As for itchiness, I don't really have an idea. Aside from the Libre bothering her I would just check for scabs. If you use the same area/spot for injections, over time they might develop scabbing and perhaps that's what's itchy?

It certainly could be the Libre. It has adhesive to hold it on but I don’t use glue (vet offices do and that wreaks havoc on their skin and the Libre).

I’ve examine her skin and there’s no scabs or sores.

Where the Libre sits is further down on her back, that’s not where she’s biting. It’s more the area of the injections when I started thinking about it.

It’s not where the Libre is installed. And yes it could be a build up of skin that’s not happy to be poked daily. :(
Her skin looks ok to me. No scabs.
Just not sure where else to poke her.

Oh poor thing.
It certainly sounds like some sort of skin irritation.
I wonder if she is sensitive to laundry detergent.
I wish she could tell you what's bothering her.
But you are such a perceptive mom - sending you a good anti itchy vibes :bighug::bighug::bighug:
 
I’ve never used a Libre but wonder if it’s time for a break from it for a few days to see. I think the highs are from the greens (blues if manual) rather than big drops. I think you are giving more mc than needed. Just my two cents FWIW.

I'm happy you're seeing more greens. Hopefully you'll find the balance between those dips and the MC. Always needing to experiment :woot:
Have you considered the itchiness to be gut-related? I know that it's one of the common symptoms of gut imbalances. Even for humans most of the times skin problems are a symptom of something internal. I don't know if you looked at the direction but if you haven't I think it's worth investigating.

Have you tried giving injections in the flank, further down her side. That might tell you if it's the injections that are bothering her. Her dose isn't that big, but it's possible the Lantus acid base is stinging her. Typically that shows up in larger doses. The solution to that particular problem is to switch to Levemir.

Where is considered the flank as an alternative?
No I haven’t tried anywhere other that shoulder area (kind of where she bites).
How do you know if it’s worth switching to Levemir? (And did I read they are going to stop making it??)

Do you think the small amount of 9.25% is MC (and too much?)

True, Shelly. Good point about gut issues. I’ll have to see if vet has ideas at some point. Not planning a visit soon though. Since she eats a home made diet it’s hard to just pivot and try a different can.

You could look into doing the stool test with AnimalBiome to see what's happening in her gut

If she doesn't respond where and when you shoot elsewhere, it's not the insulin that's the issue. The Flexpen will be discontinued April 1, 2024, and the vial end of 2024. So yes, that's an issue unless you stockpile.

Aw poor girl is still itchy... It does sound like it could be the Lantus like Wendy said. Will be good to test by shooting around different areas to see if those do it as well. Hoping for more greens for Ivy. :bighug:

I did take a look at the shoulder injection area. It does look kind of dry and flaky I would say. So maybe the skin is just tired of being poked constantly after 15 months every day.
Is there anything suggested to help heal the skin from all the jabs?
 
maybe vaseline to moisturize but you have to make sure it’s not dangerous if she licks it. I used coconut oil and also Calendula for Bella, too. She used to scratch her head and sometimes it was red and bled, and the hair was gone.
