Everyone's quite confused this morning...mamabean is up at normal time..food isn't showing up as scheduled though!!

Gave China a couple of bites of chicken and .25 unit since she was over 200. Been fighting with myself all night over this decision since she's been going lower than normal lately (probably the raw) but I also didn't want to feed her this morning right before heading out for an hour's drive in the car due to her carsickness.

Hopefully with just a tiny dose on board, and only a little food, all will be well. Will be keeping her crate covered and see if that helps.

Why do I feel like I'm about to take my child in for major surgery? (Maybe because I am nailbite_smile nailbite_smile nailbite_smile )

Will update as I can...and thanks for the good dental vines!!

Re: 12/19 China AMPS 238..OFF TO THE DENTIST!!

Morning! ~O) ~O) ~O)

Good dental vines for China. These dental things are always so trying on us beans. I am sure all will go well. I always hate the waiting part. Good luck to all of you. Scritches China , it will be over soon.

Re: 12/19 China AMPS 238..OFF TO THE DENTIST!!

Travel safe today Chris. And try not to stress too much, I'm sure China will be a champ today :-D . Sounds like an excellent feeding/dosing decision and good luck with the car sickness. Hopefully the kennel being covered so she can't see the scary fast world helps her.
Vines, hugs and thoughts all headed your direction

Re: 12/19 China AMPS 238..OFF TO THE DENTIST!!

Will be thinking of you and China today as you make your journey. I am praying for a smooth procedure and calmness for you . It isn't easy.

Re: 12/19 China AMPS 238..OFF TO THE DENTIST!!

Sending good dental vines :-D and comfort ones to you Chris! I know how hard it is to wait for them to be done, I hope it all goes quickly and smoothly. Safe travels, I'll be keeping an eye out for updates

Re: 12/19 China AMPS 238..OFF TO THE DENTIST!!

Sending good dental vines to you and China! I'll be thinking of you! The worst part is for sure the waiting. :YMHUG:

Re: 12/19 China AMPS 238..OFF TO THE DENTIST!!

Piling on some more safe travel and good dental vines!! :YMHUG: I hope it all goes better than expected with the new vetty.

Re: 12/19 China AMPS 238..MY POOR BABY!!

Heard from the vet on the way home from Mom's neurologist appointment

My poor little girl!! Had 5 extractions and 1 tooth just fell out while they were cleaning so she's coming home less 6 teeth!!

They are continuing the IV until about 4:30 so I can pick her up after that. She said she did great during the procedure but they wanted to keep her on the IV for safety's sake.

The did nerve blocks so she doesn't expect her to be in much pain (at least until later) but is sending home 7 days worth of pre-filled bupe syringes. She can eat tonight (if I can get her to eat) and she wants me to go ahead and give her her usual dose of Lantus (we'll SEE about that)

She had to go into her non-feline diabetes education vet talk about why wasn't I feeding her M/D or W/D (and I told her because they're too high in carbs) and she countered with "they're high protein though"...Yes, I told her...so is a lot of other food, but it's lower in carbs and a lot cheaper....I guess she figured she wasn't going to win that argument so went on with "I've heard that human meters aren't any good for testing animals blood glucose"...she didn't win THAT argument either!!

Her AlphaTrak had China at 418 and my Relion said 281 so she didn't think it was accurate enough....well PPPFFFTTTTT on that idea...although I plan on telling her if she'll be happy to GIVE me an AlphaTrak and provide me with FREE strips, I'll be more than happy to use it!!! (Bet that conversation ends quickly!!)

All in all, I'm very happy with the care she's gotten, and am not at all surprised that yet another vet doesn't know what they're talking about with FD, but that's ok...she's vet #4 that China's been through...and vet #3 has just given up and said "keep doing what those internet people are telling you to do"....so unless she wants to educate herself some, we're going to keep on doing what we're doing!

No antibiotics...she said there really wasn't any infection going on, but lots of inflammation (and I have to figure she was also in some pain!!)

I feel like such a bad mamabean for letting it go this long

I can leave in about 45 minutes to head up there to pick her up..another hour up and back and we'll be HOME for the night! I'm beyond tired!!

Thanks for all the dental vines as well as the calming and safe driving vines. They're all much appreciated!

Re: 12/19 China AMPS 238..MY POOR BABY!!

I am glad that procedure is over and China is getting ready to go home. You don't have to give any antibiotics so one less thing for her to adjust to. Safe trip home.

Re: 12/19 China AMPS 238..MY POOR BABY!!

:YMHUG: :YMHUG: :YMHUG: :YMHUG: :YMHUG: :YMHUG: Poor little China. She's going to be so glad to see you tonight and she will feel so much better once she's healed. Cat's are amazing at hiding pain - there wasn't any way for you to know.

I talked more to my dental vetty about food - they were cool with the raw food, but said to give food without bones for the first 7 days if there are extractions. Some of the raw foods here have bone powder in them instead so I can use those flavors. It was so refreshing to have that conversation! Sorry you had to get the expensive veterinary food talk.

Re: 12/19 China AMPS 238..MY POOR BABY!!

I'm not sure about what the Primal uses....they say "All Primal Formulas contain fresh ground bone for calcium supplementation"...now whether "ground bone" is bone powder or not, I really don't know, but considering she's lost so many, I think it might be easier for her to just eat some canned with water mixed in for awhile so she just has to lap it up and not worry about chewing at all.

Yeah Catherine, I was a little surprised at the No Antibiotics too, but she was pretty sure she wasn't going to need them because there wasn't much in the way of infection going on ...you can bet I'll be watching her close though for signs of complications...including fever and redness!

Not the first time I've heard the expensive veterinary food talk...Thank God I found this message board!!

Time to go pick up my baby!! Still a little over an hour away, but I'll feel better once I see her again!

Re: 12/19 China AMPS 238..MY POOR BABY!!

I'm glad China's procedure went well and she's getting to come home. She's going to feel so much better when she heals up. My cat MC had 10 teeth removed and healed up just fine. I figured she'd have trouble eating, but she had no trouble at all adjusting to less teeth. China may not want to eat much tonight because of the effects of the anesthesia. Sending healing prayers for China and safe driving prayers for you.

Re: 12/19 China AMPS 238,PMPS 242..BUPE QUESTION

China seems hungry, but also seems really confused as to why the food keeps dropping out of her mouth. She didn't eat much, but about 3/4 teaspoon of chicken baby food and I'll try to give her a little more in a little while. Don't want to upset her stomach.

The vet sent her home with .2mg pre-filled syringes with orders to give every 12 hours, but since I've never used it before, I don't have any idea what to watch for, or how much is "right"

She weighed 12.4lbs this morning

Any advice? I do know it goes in the "cheek pouch", not down her throat...I've learned that much here already!

Re: 12/19 China AMPS 238,PMPS 242..BUPE QUESTION

When Furball had a tooth removed last year, she spilled water all down her chest when she got a drink. It took her about a day or two to learn how to drink differently so that didn't happen. China will adjust soon and be able to eat without the food spilling out of her mouth. Poor baby.

When MC had her dental and she got too much bupe, she just sat around and kept looking around all big eyed. Each cat is different on how much bupe they need. I ended up giving MC 0.1 ml of bupe, but I had a vial I drew from.

Re: 12/19 China AMPS 238,PMPS 242..BUPE QUESTION

She may be spitting food out if shes in pain.

Ieleiana seems to like baby food better right now (She had a dental yesterday with 2 extractions) I also put a little bit of water in the baby food... Or put water in FF... I mix it really well into a bowl. Make it really soupy.

When did they tell you to give the first dose of Bupe? Did they give her injection of Bupe while she was there? Every cat acts differently on Bupe... if vet recommended .2ml I would start with that and see how she does... you can adjust the dose accordingly. You just dont want to give her too little and then her be in pain either... When we get teeth pulled, it hurts! So I assume its hurts for our kitties too.

Sending China lots of healing and fast recovery vines.

Re: 12/19 China AMPS 238,PMPS 242..BUPE QUESTION

My vet gave me pre-drawn .2 syringes too. I found that .1 worked for Bob for about 6-8 hours, so it lasted twice as long giving "half-doses". .2 really wiped him out. .1 was enough.

Re: 12/19 China AMPS 238,PMPS 242..BUPE QUESTION

She ate about 3/4 of a baby teaspoon of baby chicken food...or is that chicken baby food?

They said I could give it to her about now, but since I know how vets are about over-dosing on insulin, I just didn't want to give her an un-safe dose. Will give her the .2 and see how she does!

Thanks again everyone for all your support. It's been a long day!

Re: 12/19 China AMPS 238,PMPS 242..BUPE QUESTION

Since she never had Bupe before just keep a close eye on her and see how she reacts. If it seems like too high of a dose you can cut back the next dose... but cutting the dose back may also make the medicine not work for as long... sometimes it takes a bit of adjusting the dose. Try mixing a drop or two of water in with the baby food to make it a little easier to eat. Seemed to help Ieleiana eat it when it wasnt as thick.

Re: 12/19 China AMPS 238,PMPS 242..BUPE QUESTION

So glad China's home and you have the bupe for her. I think you'll be happily surprised by how quickly she adjusts to her 'new' mouth. She's going to feel so much better Chris, and I agree with Wendy...There's no way you would have known how uncomfortable she was, they just hide it too darn well! Scritches to China Girl for being so brave today :-D
Have a de-stressing kinda night!

Re: 12/19 China AMPS 238,PMPS 242..BUPE QUESTION

Well she don't want ANYTHING to do with me being anywhere near her mouth, so she has to be hurting.

Not sure how much actually got into her, and I think she may have swallowed some, but I'll be keeping an eye on her...a very close one

Re: 12/19 China AMPS 238,PMPS 242..BUPE QUESTION

Hi Chris,
I'm glad that China is home. I don't know much about Bupe, but I have heard that a larger dose is longer lasting and that you have to watch and see how she reacts. I'm not surprised that she doesn't want you near her mouth! Perhaps just offer her some cool, soothing water.

Rusty has only 5 teeth and has no trouble eating paté foods. But I have to chop up foods that have shreds of meat (such as the Paw Lickin' Chicken). He lost most of his teeth before he came to us, and has only had 1 extraction since. It was impossible to give him Bupe!!!

I hope you have a good night and that China will be fine. Maybe the Toof Fairy will leave her something nice under her pillow tonight.

Hugs, scritches,

Ella & Rusty

Re: 12/19 China AMPS 238,PMPS 242..BUPE QUESTION

I'm sure once she's used to her "new mouth", she'll figure out how to eat with it, but for now, between the missing teeth and the funky feeling stitches, I think she's understandably confused.

So far, so good with the bupe, and she ate a little more...BG at +2 was 196

Sure hope that once this is all healed, she'll start coming back down the dose ladder..I'd think with as bad as her mouth evidently was, it should help her numbers now that it's over with.

Re: 12/19 China AMPS 238,PMPS 242..BUPE QUESTION

Happy that China is back home with you. Sending painfree/healing vines for our girl. Hope that the bupe gives her some relief. She will feel so much better once she heals. Not a bad BG for what she has been through today!
Hope you are both able to get some rest.

Re: 12/19 China AMPS 238,PMPS 242,+2 196,+5 84..she's eating

I guess the bupe helped, however much got into her and however it got in...absorbed or swallowed

She just ate about 1/3 of a can of FF which is about the most she has been eating at any one time lately, so she's not only figuring out how to eat with less toothies, but acting like her mouth feels better

Will be setting my alarm for at least awhile longer tonight since her +5 is 84..but I'm happy she's eating now..as much as I could use the sleep, I doubt if I'd sleep well anyway since this is her first night after her first dental, and her first bupe

Re: 12/19 China AMPS 238,PMPS 242,+2 196,+5 84..she's eating

so glad she's home and all is well. you didn't mention any carsickness - did she do ok with the carrier covered? poor little girl - her mouth must've been pretty uncomfortable. she'll do better now.

punkin got .2ml bupe a lot and did fine on it. he weighed around 13 lbs. different for different cats, but if she tolerates it, i'd keep it up because you know what it's like after mouth surgery. it's easier to stay on top of pain with a consistent dose than to try to "catch up" and knock out pain after it's going. i'd rather be a little drugged and in my happy place than in pain, personally. :-D

glad you survived it too - it's nerve-wracking having the little squirts getting things done to them! :YMHUG:

Re: 12/19 China AMPS 238,PMPS 242,+2 196,+5 84..she's eating

Oh yeah!! Keeping the carrier covered DID seem to help!! No carsickness on either trip, so thanks go to this wonderful group of people again for suggesting something that worked well for China!!

Thanks again everyone for your visits, vines, and hand holding. They are much appreciated!!!
