Yesterday, lovely numbers, nightmare vet visit.

12/16 Recap:
AMPS 125 +7 126 +9 84
PMPS 109 +5.5 142 +9 101

Neko was quite affectionate this morning - and that was even after being fed. After I stopped the shower, she plopped on the bath mat, belly up, trilling for cuddles. Her back was to the hot air vent. She was very happy. :-D Now she's out in the cooler solarium. Can't make up her mind if she wants to be warm or cool.

I got the UPC ratio (urine protein creatinine) results back from the vet. Same as two weeks ago, 0.8. Since she's not azotemic, this is in the gray area of concern (>.5 but less than 1.0). Vetty is recommending an ACE inhibitor Forketor (Benazepril hydrochloride). From all I've read, this seems to be a logical next step. I've also seen Enalapril suggested. Anyone have any experience giving ACE inhibitors to their cat?

Re: 12/17 Neko AMPS 140 - ACE inhibitors?

Trix has been on benazepril since April (details in my signature. She's on it for 2 reasons - to help lower her BP (in conjunction with her amlodipine), and to help keep her kidneys stable. So far, it seems to be helping with both! From what I can tell, it has not caused any sort of negative side effects, and she seems to be feeling quite fabulous in general. But, that's the extent of my experience/knowledge.

LOL on Neko this morning...what a cutie!!!

Re: 12/17 Neko AMPS 140 - ACE inhibitors?

Thanks Amy! I thought I'd seen it mentioned somewhere. Two possible side effects I'd seen were increased appetite and weight gain. That might be good for some cats, but I don't need that!

It's nice that Neko was being so loving this morning. I don't know about the ACE inhibitor, but I hope you find something that helps her.

Re: 12/17 Neko AMPS 140 - ACE inhibitors?

i don't have experience with cats & hypertension, but in people, i know ace inhibitors can cause a cough. eventually it goes away, but that's a common initial side effect. now i'm curious if that happens in cats too.

she sounds positively charming today. i wouldn't mind spending my morning next to a heating vent either. :-D

Trix never had any sort of cough from the ACE inhibitor, but I assume this - like everything else - would be an ECID thing.

Re: 12/17 Neko AMPS 140 - ACE inhibitors?

Had one of our civies on Enalapril for almost a year - sure helped him stay steady thru HCM. He didn't gain weight. He coughed from the fluid so can't tell if it was also a side effect.

HUGS!

Re: 12/17 Neko AMPS 140 - ACE inhibitors?

Hi Wendy,
Sorry to miss you yesterday and sorry that the vetty appt. was so stressful for Neko. But she sounds good today, happy in her solarium.

Can't help with those meds.

Are you safe in the storms out there?

Hugs, scritches,

Ella & Rusty

Re: 12/17 Neko PMPS 133 - ACE inhibitors?

I spent part of today doing more research. My biggest concern is that the ACE inhibitor is to treat her proteinuria, and some proteinuria is common for acrocats so just wondering what that means. Naturally, having an acrocat just makes things a little more complicated. :? I did look at what some other acros have been taking and both benazepril and enalapril. I don't want to over treat. As far as we know so far, she doesn't have HCM (going to get another echocardiogram probably in the spring, she's not showing any signs) and her BP is unknown. Yesterday was just a disaster for getting BP. I may ask the dental vet to see if they can get it when she's there in January.

On the up side, we got the tree and got it up today. It was just cut this morning so nice and fresh. I have yet to catch a cat underneath, but I was away shopping this afternoon. They do like where I had to reposition one of the cat posts.

@Carla, Julie, Lyresa, Ella - Thanks for weighing in on your experiences. I think I'll go ahead with the meds. I'm not second guessing the vet, just how it relates to acro. She did consult with an IM vet who probably has no (known) acro experience. Ella - no storms here, just light drizzle and hardly any winds. Typical winter weather. At least it was dry when we went out to pick the tree.

Re: 12/17 Neko PMPS 133

Almost a pair of bookends for Miss Neko today- nice recovery from her hellish experience at the vet yesterday. cat_pet_icon I don't have experience with the Ace inhibitors, I only remembered reading briefly about it on Tanya's website. You could spend months, years reading up on all of that stuff man! That was a nice bonus that it was dry while you went and got your tree! :-D
