We seem to be moving along, though I'm not entirely sure what to make of it yet (still so much to learn). So tired of red, but I know patience is needed. Gen had a very brief dip into blue last night. I don't know if that was the bounce breaking? Would love some insight if anyone has some to share. @Christie & Maverick @Wendy&Neko ❤️

Unfortunately, I also woke up to find that Gen has a wound on his face right where the abscess is/was. I've been trying to keep a careful watch on him to make sure he isn't messing with it, and I haven't seen him do anything, but clearly I can't have eyes on him at all times. I wiled the area with one of the medicated wipes the vet gave me for his irritated skin (from the surgical glue) - it came away bloody, though I think with dried blood. I'm not sure what to do from here. I reached out to the vet's office (via email, as they hadn't opened yet at the time), but it's their "administrative" day and I'm not sure the doctors are even in. I'm going to give them a quick call. I'd really like to avoid going back to the ER if it's not completely necessary. (It's an expensive ride into the busy center of the city, huge amounts of time for anything less than a real emergency, and I'm so behind on work. I only have through Friday before my office closes for the calendar year and if I don't get some catch-up done by then there will be hell to pay.)

He, of course, seems perfectly content with life (apart from objecting strenuously to me touching his face in any way, or attempting to hold him still to get a photo of the wound).

Happy hump day, all! Wishing you a pleasant day with smooth surfing for your kitties.

Little does he know he's one wound-swipe away from the cone. Dried blood is definitely better than fresh blood, and fresh blood is better than pus (my least favorite word)/"purulent discharge". Is it just a small cut, or more of an open sore?

It's more of an open sore. :/ No pus that I could tell, but he doesn't want to let me near it, so I've only had brief glimpses and furtive photos which are partially obscured by fur.

I copied you again and ordered the cone you use, and it has just been delivered. That said, I'm not actually sure how a cone stops him from swiping at his face? (I get how it would prevent him from licking spots on his body he shouldn't, but I don't see how it keeps paws away from face, if that makes sense.)

That wound on his face is likely the infection being "killed" and it clearing up. Now, I don't have a medical degree, but grew up with a nurse and raised 2 kids and it seems like it is just the area trying to heal, inide and out. I would try not to let him mess with it too much as to allow the healing. I'd only take him in if it starts to look really irritated or really starts bleeding. Dried blood is good, it's healing.

I'm just confused as to why there would be anything external unless he was scratching at it a lot - the abscess was in the jaw, very much inside, though it caused swelling that was visible on his face. At least, I think that's what was happening?

If you think if it this way.... all that nastiness inside is being pushed out, and some may very well be coming out on the outside too. There isn't alot of space in there and I has to go somewhere. Give it time to heal and I'm sure he will try to mess with it too because it's probably going to itch a little as it heals too. You're doing great taking care of him, he just don't know it yet. Try to keep it clean and dry and it should be fine as the ab help.

Thank you, that's helpful, and I will do my best! ❤️ I hope he doesn't decide to do anything really problematic tomorrow or Friday when I can't be home with him. Glad I can today.

Maybe Gen has longer limbs than Esse (or does more yoga) but he couldn't reach his face with his front or back legs. He could swipe/press his back foot against the bottom of the fabric against his jaw but it kept his claws (and foot germs) away from the wounds--we've used it for an abscess on his forehead and after a dental infection. Fingers crossed for you!

I'll probably put the cone on him later, but he's so peaceful right now. 🥹

(The wounded cheek isn't visible from this angle.)

Poor Gen. I used years ago for one of my dogs a product called Derma-Gel, and recently used it for my civvie (non-diabetic cat) when he had open neck sores. I like the Derma-Gel because it is supposed to be safe if cat or dog ingests it. The other product I have on hand in case it’s an area that cat/dog can’t lick is Silver Honey. Both help with wound healing.

For some cats, a shot 1 hour late can act like a decrease, it will be interesting to see how he fares.

Uh! Poor Gen (but also how cute) 🥺 He’s lucky you’re so attentive to him! Hopefully as all others have commented above, it’s in the healing phase.

Also, good luck with the busy push through this work week! Cannot wait for you to have the rest of the year off - from what I’ve gathered, you both need and deserve it! 🤗🤗

Sigh. Another high cycle. I don't know if this is bouncing, late shot time, both, something else ...?

He really does not like me cleaning his wound. :(

Does this product come in a little red tube? I'm having some difficulty because there are a lot of things named some variation on "Derma-Gel." 😅
