I can't believe it! It's a Catmas Miracle!
I want to thank this forum and the cat lovers on it for all of your help in getting my boy Obie to Remission!
Since you all were so kind and this is a big day for him and I. I'd like to introduce you to
THE HISTORY OF OBIE.

I have this thing where I can't have less than 3 cats. It just doesn't feel right to have just two(Or one) to me.
When my cat Manderin passed 8 years ago I was on a fast track to replace him quick.
My late aunt worked in Animal medicine for a very big pharmacutical company and told me that they had reserve kittens from a test
that they didn't test on and were going to put down since the test was over. Well, here came the cutest little annoying kitten one
could ever imagine existing!
My other cats hated him!
My old cat Barney did not appreciate the playful Joy that was Obie.
My girl cat Anna didn't care much for the new little mouth on the block either, but boy was he a cutie pie!
Bushy tail, tatooed ears. Obie was a very different cat.
He loved straws and he used to play fetch with a plastic pop cap, and he loved me.
I remember falling asleep on the couch one night when he was very young only to be awakened by frantic flopping!
Obie had become tangled in this hanging from the cieling cat toy on a string!
I woke up and got him free and threw that toy in the trash.
Obie loved trying to get outside and my neighbors often heard the scottish in me
as I cursed him out and carried him back up a flight of stairs.
I'm sure they thought I was a special kind of fruitcake. :P
Anyways, about 6-7 months ago I noticed him drinking a boatload of water and peeing a lot.
I noticed he started to look thin and like he wasn't feeling right.
I took him to the vet and his sugar was 560! Obie was what people call here a "Sugarcat"!
This was going to cost some $$$ and my vet was cool in taking my $$$.
We were sent home with an Alpha Trak2 renter(Had to buy one for almost 200$), some Diabetic perscription canned food (That was higher in carbs than Fancy feast), some B12(Which has really helped), Some insulin, needles,iv fluids, acarbose(Which absorbed the carbs that were in the carb-ridden cat food they sold us), and instructions. Also, they gave me a link to this page.
Since my boy was sick I dove in deep and learned all I could about sugar cats and from what I've learned and from what I was tought here,
I found myself disagreeing with how my vet wanted me to treat my cat. Things didn't make much sense to me.
They wanted me to test him far less than I did.At first only during preshot and then less than that. They actually wanted me to test him only if he is acting funny.Nope, nada, no way, I was not about to let him get to where he was "acting funny", because it meant he was in a bad way and It would also cost me an arm and a leg to run him in.
They were so sure that I was treating him/injecting him wrong and it was something I was doing wrong that kept his numbers very very high!
They wanted me to throw away my insulin after 6 weeks and try a different kind because the Lantus just had to be bad anyways and this new stuff was going to be the Sh_t!
I had a very hard time believing the Insulin was bad because I did see some pretty low numbers while using it.
Being sick of the vets insistance that the Relion human meter was complete crap and I should only use the AlphaTrak 2 (With it's high priced strips),and the way they wanted me to change his dose up and down when it takes a few cycles to see if a dose is even doing anything, I quit writing them (Also got charged for email advice from them that stunk) and stuck with what I thought I knew was best.

For so long I saw crappy numbers from Obie.
What if the Vet was right and I'm treating him wrong?
I mean, I'm a moldmaker not a vet! How gawddamn arrogant can I be?
I stuck with it.
I got better at dosing and used a caliper.
I saw a positive pattern for once from Insulin that the vet told me was bad months before!
His evening numbers were trending down.
This was new!
I thought that if I fed him a late night snack to see if it would keep him from going low and bouncing through the roof
that maybe his mourning numbers would inprove.
I knew from previous test that he went low at night And holyhell If I didn't see a better morning numbers!
Then a few weeks ago (The day after Thanksgiving)
I woke up late and rushed his shot and fed him before relizing that I woke up an hour Early
and Obie was the lowest I ever tested him at at that time and I shot him anyways! Stupid move!!
He went low and I gave him syrup and rushed him to the emergency vet where he was released after an hour.
He had rebounded.
That night he was in the high 90's and I skipped his shot.
The next day I gave him a reduced shot. The night after that he was low so I skipped his shot.
Three days later I started this OTJ trial.
He has been green every since then.
He has a new lease on life and I have a healthy friend, a bit more $$, and I'm free to resume a normal existance.
You guys were a godsend!
Thank you for helping me help my boy.
Happy Christmas!

What a story! Sadly, many vets just plain don't know much about how to treat FD.

How heartless of pharmaceutical companies to put down test kittens like throwing out extra test tubes. Bad enough to experiment on living creatures at all. Thank goodness you rescued Obie!

I hear you. Animal testing is a bunch of crap! If I recall there were 2 other kittens in the trial that were adopted out too.

What an incredible story. Sounds like Obie hit the jackpot when he got you!. Congratulations on getting him OTJ. Sending lots of vines that he stays that way! :-D

thanks for sharing his story. I'm also appalled that they were doing testing on kittens. just unreal. Lucky for Obie that you like cats - he hit the jackpot when he found you! Not everyone would have given him the care you did - great job, james!

he looks a little, uh, "fluffy" in his pictures. ;-) Is he at a good weight now? If he's overweight, you may want to SLOWLY help him lose weight. Slow is really important because cats can develop a fatty liver & get very, very sick if they lose weight too quickly. I'm thinking that to help keep him in remission, it might be good if he's at a healthy weight. Dr. Lisa has a section on http://www.catinfo.org on kitties and weight that might be helpful.

I'm so excited for you guys. You got your Christmas present early!

Most of those pictures are old. He is at a far better weight now.
The Christmas tree picture was 2 years ago.
I think his chubbyness was from the prescription dry food I was feeding him a the time. :)
This was also the first morning in about 6 months where I didn't have to poke his ear :)
