Hi All,

I don't quite know how to carry-over quotes from previous days. The comment & questions below are from my 12/11/2011 condo. Since it looks like I'll continue seeing some ketones, as long as Marilyn hangs out in blacks & reds, I would like to understand Sandy's "equation". Does anyone know the answers to my questions below? Thanks so much for your time.

Keep in mind not enough calories + not enough insulin + infection = ketones

Does this mean she must have all three to show ketones? Meaning, it's not just "not enough insulin", but also not enough food, plus an infection? Or is ketones the infection? You've lost me on this one. Can you please clarify?

Hi Everyone,

I realize it's the holiday season, and everyone is very busy. However, I'm wondering if anyone has the answers to my questions in the above reply. If the answers are "I don't know", that's helpful too. Maybe that will give me a clue that only Sandy has the answers and I should PM her (?). Or, maybe I should post this link on other boards to get more eyes on it?

If Marilyn has an infection when she's showing ketones, then I would need to make yet another vet appointment, which I would not be considering if not for the 12/16/11 ketone warning. I thought I somewhat understood ketones, but when I think "infection", I think "give antibiotics"...so I really need to have the equation clarified.

Thanks so much,

Deb

Hi, Deb...

i realize that you've asked it a couple of times...but with so many people posting,
it's best to put "eyes please" or "ketone question" in the subject line of your first post...
that catches more attention on a busy forum :-D

Sorry that I missed your question.

There isn't an easy answer and a lot depends on the cat. If you've been following Tawny or Garland, you'll notice that they are prone to developing ketones. Some cats are just more apt to develop ketones. High numbers can cause ketones to develop all on their own.

The combination of not enough insulin, infection/inflammation, and not eating can be a perfect storm. The scenario is that an infection is a form of stress on your cat's system. Stress causes a biological response and BG numbers rise. Between feeling lousy due to an infection and high BG numbers, a cat may not want to eat. If you go back in Garland's or Tawny's condos you'll see how this combination of elements has resulted in an elevated level of ketones.

If you are at all concerned, then talk to your vet and get blood work done. Diabetes can make cats more likely to develop UTIs or other infections. Just out of curiousity, has Marilyn had a dental any time in recent memory? Gingivitis can also raise numbers.

Thanks Sienne,

This is what I understood all along. I also understand that infection can raise the BG. I guess I wasn't understanding the "plus signs", and then ultimately, equaling ketones. I suppose the "plus" is actually an "or"; or one of the above, or any combination of the three. It sounded to me as if you must have all three. It wasn't just in my post, I saw the same wording in other posts, and then started to panic. I searched the internet looking for the same combination, but came up empty. So thanks for clearing it up.

As for Marilyn's dental history, she had 5 tooth extractions in 2004. However, she had a complete physical the day before her FD dx last month. Her appetite is excellent...but again, the "not enough food" sounded like I wasn't feeding enough (as opposed to her not wanting to eat), so I increased her Friskies Pate by 1/4 can daily. I hope this was the right thing to do.

On another note, I am increasing her Lantus by 0.25u with her AM injection...coming up shortly. This will bring her to 2 units BID. Please let me know if there is any objection, or further advice.

Thanks so much,

Deb
