congratulations! Do you have the directions for the future? Just in case you don't, here ya go:

Once he/she is through the trial successfully, you enter a new phase. Your cat is still diabetic but has now become diet-controlled. Continue feeding low carb food in the manner successful for your kitty. If you decide to change his/her feeding schedule, let your meter be your guide to the best times to feed. Avoid medications with sugar in them and steroid medications unless they are medically essential. Continue testing blood glucose weekly for the first month and then monthly forever. It's a good idea to weigh him/her monthly. Weight should remain stable. If he/she seems "off" or sick, or is showing signs of diabetes (excessive drinking, eating, urinating, weight loss), test his/her blood glucose right away. Keep the teeth and gums clean and healthy; dental issues can bring a cat out of remission. If you see rising blood glucose numbers, it's time for a visit to the vet!

Thanks Julie....this is great info to have.

I can do all .....except the dental which does worry me. I am now unemployed and there is no way in the near future I will be able to afford a dental cleaning even though the vet said both my cats need it. I feel awful knowing they need it but its just not possible.

If you already know he needs one, just keep your eyes on his BGs and if they start to rise, that might be the cause. As expensive as it is to get a dental done, it would be less in the long run than insulin and supplies for the rest of his life. You can only do what you can do, of course, i'm just saying that when you can, i'd have it at the top of the priority list.

Will put it on the list but I know it can't happen. Not at over $600. Even when I start work again I don't make that sort of money.

Congratulations Juliet and Silver! Great job you two. party_cat party_cat

I've heard of people using on line fundraisers like GoFundMe for kitty dentals. In the mean time, enjoy the holidays with your OTJ kitty. :-D

Congrats!

In addition to the GoFundMe site, keep an eye out for Dental Month. Many vets reduce the costs for dentals then -- I think it's in Feb. Of course, if your vet had a good heart, maybe the office will allow you to pay for a dental in installments.

Congrats. My vet does reduce for the month of February but only about 15%. It still costs over $500 and that's without x-rays which he feels aren't necessary. I hope Silver doesn't need the dental.

Congratulations to you and Silver!

May you two enjoy life at the falls!

It doesn't matter if he needs it or not, he can't have it.

Congratulation! WEll done Silver!

You need pet toothpaste, C.E.T. makes it in both poultry and seafood flavors. This is the best tooth brush to use, small and easy to get in the mouth. Don't get the kind that goes on your finger, too big! Believe me I've tried them all! My vet actually carries them so you can check around to see if any vets in your area have them. No shipping.

Here is a great video on getting you cat used to having it's teeth brushed.https://www.veritasdvm.com/veritas/courses/brushing-your-cats-teeth/index.htm Click on the video links on the left hand column to start the videos.
