Yesterday Neko did a lovely flattish and almost all blue day cycle, then decided to hit the diving board in the evening. A great time was had at the west coast PJ party with Zener, Tess, and Buster.

12/13 Recap:
AMPS 178 +4 271 +7 159 +9 122
PMPS 134 +3 69  +4 35  :o  +4.5 64  +5 86  +6 83  +7 95

A couple of observations from last night. She has never before gone that low that early, until now +4.5 was her earliest nadir. Neko normally gets mini meals at +1, +2 and +3. She was 69 at +3 last night before I fed her last mini meal. But Neko is an acrocat, which means she has a working pancreas. I did feed her at +3 (3-4%), but I think that contributed to the dive to +35. The question: Any suggestions about how to approach this situation in the future? I have to feed at +3, she is very demanding about her food. She actually was even more strident last night because she was dropping. Do I try for just 0-1% carbs? Go for the HC right away? With raw food it's harder to plan in advance because it takes a day to thaw, so I have a few cans around, but mostly HC or LC backup. I think Neko was angling for a deduction anyway, but the food might have made her go a bit lower.

Today we get a pokey break, as bounce recovery begins. Neko hasn't been outside yet, in spite of the dry weather and a bit of blue sky. She is less active when high. But I did manage to get a bit of play from her from the new laser toy I bought today. :-D

Re: 12/14 Neko AMPS 395 +4 437 - food ?

Hi Wendy,

I give a regular sized meal for the night feedings. Racci has a regular sized LC meal after and mc treats with her test and then at +3, the same - mc treats with the test, lc meal after. This way I know she will be safe for the rest of the night and I can sleep for a few hours. She usually wakes me about 5 hours later if DH hasn't gotten up before me to feed her. She gets a regular breakfast then too & a small breakfast about an hour later but doesn't get meds for another 3.5 hours. I give her another small breakfast after her test, shot & meds.

Since her shot time is so late, sometimes I don't take that PM+3 but I always feed that way regardless to keep her safe.

Hugs,
Melanie & Racci

Re: 12/14 Neko AMPS 395 +4 437 - food ?

Having a cat that dives, my knee jerk thought is that when you see a drop of almost 50% from pre-shot to your first early test, get more frequent tests. I would have probably tested at +3.5. Given that Neko is an acro kitty, I would also break out the HC especially when you're seeing numbers close to 40. If you look at Gabby's SS from last evening, she got HC at +3 because she dropped 100 points so there was momentum propelling her drop. How you intervene depends on how carb sensitive your cat is, when the drop is occurring, what kind of momentum is there, etc. With an acro kitty, LC may cause Neko's pancreas to produce insulin so you need to adjust the carb content for that contingency.

I also think you're right -- Neko was building up to the reduction. Her spreadsheet is looking good.

Re: 12/14 Neko AMPS 395 +4 437

I forgot to mention, Neko also went 4 cycles with nothing higher than yellow (until today), a new record for her. :-D

@Barb - Thanks, I loved all that green last night, it was a long one for her.

@Melanie - With Neko being a bouncy acrocat, I am finding her quite unpredicable. Her nadirs are anywhere from +4 (as of last night) to +9, so I can't put food out for her, even in a autofeeder. Also, as last night proved, LC can actually driver her lower, instead of getting her to surf. I think my options are really low LC or HC. I may try an MC experiment during the day sometime. I used to do that a lot more, before she had her acro diagnosis.

@Sienne - thanks for the suggestions. I like the rule of thumb on diving 50% early and testing more frequently. Neko normally isn't a diver like that so it caught my by surprise. I do break out HC at anything below 50 or if it's late at night and close to what might be nadir. HC normally gets a pretty good response from Neko and I do plan to test MC sometime during the day to see if I can get a gentler upward motion with something with less carbs. I also haven't done any experiments with honey/HC so that's another option. Last night, I think Neko's pancreas did produce insulin after her +3 meal.

Hi Wendy & Neko,

Just looked at your SS. That was quite a night last night!! The acro sure does seem to complicate everything. You have a good set of guidelines, so now all Neko has to do is cooperate!

Have a fine evening. Rusty is waiting to welcome Neko back to the Lagoon and promises that he will keep a better eye on her so she stays away from the 30s tidal basin.

TGIF!

Sloooowly coming down. She had a good hour outside this afternoon in the dry. I had to drag her in, so she's feeling a bit better as the numbers come down. And best of all, dinner tonight is rabbit - one of their favourites!

@Carla - Neko should see some improvement this cycle. There might be some shed talking too which helps. She's never been as low (AFAIK) as she was last night, so it's not surprising Miss Liver had a fit.

@Ella - Hmm, a cat cooperating. There's a thought! Neko does like to play by a slightly different set of rules. Now I just wish she go low more during the day so I can experiment and keep a closer watch on her. Neko thanks Rusty for his advice, she does need to confer with the experts when she gets down there. But Rusty was pretty busy rescuing cats from the depths last night!

@Melissa - Still got a bit before my first test, but I can tell from how Neko acts that she is shaking off the bounce.

@Sienne - I've seen that Gabby can bounce with the best of them. I was impressed today that she didn't, but it looks like she had other plans. At some point I'll experiment with honey or karo to see if it impacts the height or duration of bounces for Neko. Gravy can have a pretty dramatic effect for Neko.
