Checkers had vetty appt today. Problem with his mouth was a piece of root, left from dental last year. If I'm repeating Dr Dave correctly, the root has sharp edges, and moves around under the gum, causing soreness/pain. It's a long story, but it was surgically removed this morning. His gums are beautifully healthy, according to Dr Dave, and they were able to close it nicely.

His BUN is slightly elevated, doc mentioned dehydration, but kidneys are fine. Liver is fine.

He has a low grade bladder infection, dx'd with cystocentesis.

He has hyperthroidism, which does not shock me, as he was borderline last check. He will be on Methimazole.

Well, that was our fun day.

Oh yeah, no shot this morning, and he is in 300's right now.

Should I give shot early tonight? If so, do I stll wait the full 12 hours to give AM shot?

So glad Checkers dental problems are resolved - hoping he gets his appy back quickly.

Not sure if you're aware of the hyper-T yahoo group - very good with dosage and advice (although you can't be a proactive as with diabetes) but vets often start on too high a dose of methimazole and cats can go hypo-T.
They recommend 1.25 bid and increasing after bloodwork results if needed - like our start low approach.

Quite the full vetty day for you and Checkers today. I'm glad they were able to find out what was wrong with his mouth and fix it so easily. Is he on meds for the bladder infection too? Neko usually has some indications of dehydration from her blood tests, not uncommon with diabetics.

Are you doing the topical Methimazole or edibles/pills? The topical is pretty easy to administer. Good thing you caught it early.

Since you didn't give a shot today, I think you can give it anytime as long as it's at least 12 hours since the last shot.

Hi Barb, glad they found out what was wrong with Checkers's mouth and the surgery fixed it. Sending vines for the other medical issue. I''ve been thinking of you, as I know you've been worried. Hugs to Checkers and you from us.

I'm so glad it was nothing serious with Checkers' mouth and they were able to take care of it today. I hope he heals quickly from the bladder infection. I saw Wendy asked what type of medicine you will be giving Checkers for the Hyper-T. I was wondering that too. You can also get it compounded into a liquid. I had that done in the past for one of my cats that was hard to pill. They made it tuna flavored. Its a little more expensive to do that. Callie has Hyper-T and I give her the pill BID. I can get her a 90 day supply of 5 mg pills at Rite-Aid Pharmacy for $9.99.

I am so glad to hear that checkers mouth problem has been taken care of .. and soon he will be on the right meds for his thyroid problems .. Soon he'll be feeling like a young'n!

All in all, a pretty good vetty report for Checks. That's great they got the piece of root out. And the infection and hyper-T can be treated.

If you want to shoot early, go ahead. You can work the time back gradually. It's your call.

FYI -- if there's an extraction, it's important to get post procedure X-rays so the vet knows there are no roots left behind.

What a busy, busy day for you guys! Lots of stuff to address, but it sounds like a clear path has been laid out. If you do go with the topical/transdermal version of the methimazole, the cheapest place I found it was Drs Foster and Smith. That's what I used with Mario. I know some kitties have a hard time, digestively, with the pill, so one advantage of the transdermal gel is that you bypass the digestive tract. The bummer is there is no way for us to test if the dose is right at home :sad: . I felt like I was so spoiled with being able to test Trix at home, but had to haul Mario off to the vetty for tests.

BTW...HyperT and high BP tend to go hand in hand, so it's a good idea to have Checker's BP checked as well.

Wendy, he's on Clav for the infection.
Denise and Wendy, he's on 5mg of Meth, once daily. i had a choice of doing the ear gel, that gets compounded, but this was first choice of doc and me.

Carla, I paid $15.30 for 30. at clinic.

Sienne, I almost remember that they knew that root fragment was in there, but not sure. I remember being told that the tooth broke off, when it was being removed. It was very bad. I just hope all of it is gone. It was hurting him.

I read that it can cause more damage to dig out a root piece, than to leave it and hope it's absorbed.
I didn't want to make an issue of who is to blame. It's done now. Next time I'll have different questions.

I have anger over this, and have to not dwell on it, or I'll make myself physically sick.

He gets rechecked in a month for the hyperT....I'll have lots of questions, I'm sure. I need to watch for side effects of Meth.
 
Barb it's always more expensive at the vet. Once you get Checkers on a regular dose, you may want to call some pharmacies close to you and see if you can get a better price. Sending prayers for Checkers to heal quickly from the root removal & bladder infection.
