when i tried to e-tube feed her at 1a.m. all the stuff did, which was the consistency of water, was back up out of the top. I tried and tried to clear it. I finally gave up. the syringe went down about 10mls but most of that probably came back out the top.

her BG was awful at 12/11 pmps - 453, BBK 3.8. i called the clinic. they said if i wanted to tube feed her go ahead but that didn't work very well. also that she had eaten a lot there that day b4 i picked her up so she was probably ok.

amps bg this am was 186; +2.5 was 226.

she ate pretty good this morning, mostly s/o dry (she's got to eat s/thg) and a little Wellness Chicken, some of that was mixed w/the dry.

i talked to the clinic this a.m., told them about the tube, they want to check it today. so we are on our way back down there now.

good thing the guy who works at THS when i'm not there is cheap! i won't get there til closing time today now. (Goody.)

will update when i can, it will probably be late tonight.

:YMHUG: :YMHUG: :YMHUG: :YMHUG: You will get it worked out. Come on, Tawny, eat a little more for your bean!

Re: 12/12 Tawny - etube issues

Desi:

I'm so happy Tawny got home and is doing so much better. Mike updated me every day and I kept you both in my prayers.

You have to flush the tube....I hope they will show you how to do that at the vet. I also suggest you PM Karrie (Karrie and Maverick) because she is phenomenally knowledgable about e tubes and can tell you
exactly how to flush it and how often. It's been many years since I had a cat with one .....we flushed with tepid water...but things have changed and Karrie knows best.

Good luck!!!

((((Desi)))) and ((((Tawny)))). I'm sure you will figure out the etube. That is so frustrating. Great to hear that Tawny is eating something. She is tough. Thinking of you and sending healing energy.

Re: 12/12 Tawny - etube issues

The food is probably thinned out to much. When I would do her flushes with water it would come up to the top like that almost everytime. The food should be much thicker than water... Kinda like pudding. Did it clog up completely , or just come up to the top and then go down?

I wonder if they accidentally sent you home with a clogged tube? They hadn't used it in 24 hours right? Have you ever been able to get anything down it?

Re: 12/12 Tawny - etube issues

I pm'd Desi this morning - I don't think I saw this post. I am sure the vets office forgot to flush the tube when they last fed her. So it was probably blocked all the way down. Frustrating. I hope the vet doesn't charge her for this.

I also think you are thinning out the food too much. Water doesn't have calories. For the first feeding - so you have confidence it would be okay. But as long as its thin enough to go through the syringe, and strained through a seive, and a post flush done you should have no issues with blocking.

Re: 12/12 Tawny - PM Update

The clinic wanted to look at the tube so I took her back down there this afternoon. Dr. Amanda got it unclogged by "pulsing" a little water thru it. She showed me how to do this, ck'd the consistency of what i was using & OK'd it, tested it on the practice tube and went over it all again w/me. Tawny had just eaten a lot so we did not actually tube feed her at the clinic.

Yes, it had been more than 24 hrs since the clinic had used it, and another 10 or so b4 i tried to use it.

Do i need to use that tube or at least flush water thru it every 24 hrs to keep it from clogging?

Dr. Amanda looked at the infection at her incision while we were there and said it looked no worse, that's good. I thought the same. She still wants us to keep our appt for Wed. to double-ck it and we will.

Also checked her urine ketones while we were there and there were NONE. YAY!

Tawny's BGs today were amps 186, +2.5/228, at the clinic ~330-s/thg and pmps was 370 but of course the first thing they did when she got to the clinic was put a bowl of s/o in front of her.

she did eat on her own this morning at home also, i always offer her wet 1st, she nibbled a little wellness chicken, then would not touch any more so i gave her some s/o dry. i hate this but the girl has got to eat and every time try to get her to eat any wet it seems to send her right back to the hospital for days, so i am going to let her eat what she wants for now and tube feed if she does not eat enough.

she did nibble at some more wellness ckn on the way to the clinic and also at pmps, not enough tho so she got some more s/o tonite too. She is however showing more and more interest in the wellness. but right now she will have to get what she wants. LVRC says this is what we need to do just to make sure she eats. she has got to eat.

How do you spell exhausted? D.E.S.I.

sorry for the short, late post. as usual, thank you all for all the support.

see ya all tomorrow (which it almost is!)

P.S. Tinkerbell is fine, low 300s today, didn't get her own condo today.

Please remember that LOTS of food is required to keep her DKA at bay and the liver healthy. Not just little bits of food. You have the tube. Do not be afraid to use it. Once you start using it you will lose your fear of it.
