Re: 12/12 Sooty AMPS 303

Good idea: Let's all get a test at 12:12 P.M. That's what we need around here, a little consistency!

Come on down to blue, Sooty!

Re: 12/12 Sooty possible Pee Problem??

It looks like we might have some kind of a Pee problem, in the last hour or so, Sooty has been to the LB about 5 or 6 times and each time he's only done a tiny little pee, no more than couple thimblefuls...

Also he did puke up a bit of his brefis but there was a bit of fur in it so I figured that was the reason...

I have felt (palpated?) around his lower abdomen area and don't feel anything tight or distended (but then, I'm no vet...!).

When the vet tested his urine a couple of month or so ago, she did say he had "some crystals" but very small and she didn't think it a problem.

Do you think he might have something going on - and does anyone have any specific advice, or questions or ????

Re: 12/12 Sooty - possible Pee Problem - advice?

could be a uti has he ever been plugged before? Is there blood in the urine? I have put a plastic bag in the litter box to catch urine for ketones. If it continues he should see a vet. Sorry he's having trouble.

Re: 12/12 Sooty - possible Pee Problem - advice?

Do you have access to your vet on the weekend? If so, I'd call her. Gracie has had a long history of FLUTD with no crystals or bacteria and if Sooty was a girl, I'd probably not get too anxious about the possibility of her blocking if there were crystals which you won't know w/out a urinalysis. If your vet thought he might have crystals, then you have to worry about him blocking. So you can either take him to the vet (ER) or watch him closely and get him to the vet tomorrow as early as possible. As long as he is producing SOME urine, then he isn't blocked but if you see him straining and not producing any...then he needs to get to the ER immediately. The only other thing about this is that it is uncomfortable and painful. When Gracie had a bout of this, I always gave her buprenex to help ease the discomfort. I think, if he were my cat, if he had never done this before, I'd probably take him to the vet or ER today....but that's just me and I understand sometimes there are limitations. So if you can't, then please watch him closely and make sure he continues to pee and try to get as much extra water in him as you can.

I hope he's ok Perry.

Re: 12/12 Sooty - possible Pee Problem - advice?

I think we'll call the Vet, yes they are there at the weekend. He just went to the LB again and same thing. So as you said, if there's a blockage at all then at least he's not completely blocked. We're mixing water with his food...

Will update you again later..

eta: called, Vet will see him at 12:30 (25 minutes from now...)

Re: 12/12 Sooty - possible Pee Problem - advice?

glad you're taking him in. i have a male who started with the same symptoms you're describing. it turned out he had calcium oxalate crystals.
best to have it checked out...

Re: 12/12 Sooty - possible Pee Problem - advice?

J.D. did something like what you describe 3 times. Twice on a Sunday in which we went to the ER both times. The first time, as soon as I entered the door they took him away from me and took him in the back room while I filled out paperwork.

I was advised to get him seen by the board, and it did give me peace of mind. He would frantically go from litter box to litter box trying to pee, but only pee about the size of a marble. It was very stressful for him. Of course once at the vet, he peed just fine.

I'm glad you're going in.

Re: 12/12 Sooty - 12:12: 231

Thanks everyone, still got that 12/12 12:12 BG - 231... off the the vet in a minute... will update you when we get back...

Re: 12/12 Sooty - 12:12: 231

Better safe than sorry when it comes to male cats and pee problems. I'm glad you're going to the vet. Please update when you can.

Re: 12/12 Sooty - 12:12: 231

Just got back - vet confirmed his bladder isn't full so if there's a blockage, it isn't a complete blockage. Temperature, etc, all normal...

They wanted to get an ultrasound to look for crystals and a sterile sample to culture for possible UTI (just as a precaution since he has no other indications of infection), but there wasn't enough in there for either ultrasound or cystocentesis, so they gave him a bag of squids and sent us home for an hour... they will continue then.

Thanks everyone for all the advice and support - always good to get your thoughts as to the right thing to do...

Re: 12/12 Sooty - 12:12: 231

Perry...glad that your vet is so proactive. An U/S and C&S is really the best way to go...not all vets have that capability. I'm so glad to hear he isn't totally blocked. Please keep us updated and great that you got him in today.

Re: 12/12 Sooty - 12:12: 231

OK we're back! Vet said U/S was clear so if he had had a blockage this morning, it looks like he passed it. She still suspects it's possible he's starting with a UTI so he has 10 days of Amoxi pills to take. UA results should be in tomorrow with C&S results in a few days (at Antech).

Let's hope he settles down OK now he's back home...

Thanks for looking out for us, you guys!

You're on great form today Celi! Thank you for these vines Sooty seems to have received (and put right to work!) his plumbing problem seems to have resolved itself and so far, he's back to normal LB action...

Phew - I just wish he would stop throwing us these curveballs. Seems he will use any excuse, to go and visit the lovely ladies at the vet's office - who are quite enamored with our handsome black devil !!! I was thinking I should hand him the bill, the next time (but he'd probably only put it on my credit card...)

Re: 12/12 Sooty - +4 231 +9 246

I'm glad you took him to the vet and he is now doing well. Perhaps he just wanted the extra attention. We all know he does not get much (ha ha).

Wait - Sooty is MY handsome black devil...and I don't share well (although you guys can keep the bills!).

had to peek in here to see what the verdict was after seeing the vet...
happy to hear there were no apparent problems with the plumbing!!
