yesterday's disaster (late night): viewtopic.php?f=9&t=31868&start=0

Good Sunday Morning, Everyone,

Just in case you missed the excitement of last night: we had a chimney fire in our wood stove. You can read about it in my last post in yesterday's condo!

Rusty bounced this morning, I think because there was so much excitement last night: the fire, the firemen, the dinner guests. I tested him right after the firemen left (at PMPS, bg= 72), but didn't test him at bedtime because I didn't want to upset him again (ear testing is NOT his favorite thing, and I've been botching it again--not getting blood until 4 or 5 pokes). So he had his bedtime snack (actually, a lot of it was his dinner, because earlier he was too wound-up to eat properly), + lots of extra food for the nighttime (all of which was eaten). He slept with us all night. This morning we played with Big Bug and Rusty got to go down into the cellar while we got the shop-vac to clean up the mess in the stove. I'm exhausted and it's only 9:15 A.M.!! Rusty made a bunch of very swift adjustments to the events of the evening and we are very proud of him. He was very sociable with our guests. This is a cat who can take things in stride (as long as they don't involve his ear or his shot!!). Rusty has now been here for 2 weeks!!

Terrible weather here today: freezing rain, travel advisories, etc. Everyone stay safe!

Re: 12/12 Rusty AMPS 145

Oh man what a time you've had I hope you get over it all.. but wow is Rusty a trooper or what? So glad he's found his way to you - clearly, together, you can and will overcome all adversity that comes your way!

Re: 12/12 Rusty AMPS 145

Ella...I'm so sorry about the fire and so happy you guys are OK. How frightening for all of you. And Rusty just took it in stride. What a good boy.

Stay warm my dear.

Re: 12/12 Rusty AMPS 145

Wow Rusty...what an exciting home you got yourself involved with, eh? Your Mama has a strange way of preparing for guests, eh?
Glad he was sociable after all that commotion Ella. I am so glad that it turned out okay. Good luck with your inspection now. What happened? Great report for Rusty...happy that he plays so nicely. Two weeks, eh? Well, that went fast. Hope you can have a relaxing day today...rest up a little. :YMHUG:

Re: 12/12 Rusty AMPS 145

Oh Ella so sorry about the fire I'm so relieved though that it wasn't too serious. It had to be so frightening for all of you. Poor Rusty. I can't believe its been two weeks already how time flies ohmygod_smile . I'm sure Rusty will come down for you. Have a good day.

Re: 12/12 Rusty AMPS 145

WOW - has it really been two weeks? it seems like just yesterday as we all watched Rusty make the move to his new home. What a fantastic two weeks it has been. Impressed with his social skills - just goes to show how happy he is there. Exceptionally nice Rusty!

So sorry about all the commotion there yesterday, the fire - it sounds like all is well now, but omg - and I only imagine the mess. Good luck.

Sorry for the testing issues - it happens to all of us. Been having a few of those myself lately, even with Mannie being as easy to test as he is...

Equally sorry for the rain - it is the same here today too. We have a very large system moving through - intense rains this morning. At least for us it isn't cold, so no ice issues. Now the mtn passes are another issue... what a mess there.

Rusty!!!! I am so PROUD of you. You did such a wonderful job in the kitchen last night. Thank you so much for all the limes you were able to harvest, and especially for you assistance with the gator round up - dude! that was scary, and uhh no more gators for me. It is so cool to watch you slice and dice and chop and sing at the same time. Maybe we can hang out some today - does your bean need any help with the fire clean-up? Later!! ~~ Mannie

Re: 12/12 Rusty AMPS 145

Has it been 2 weeks, really? it seems like it was just yesterday we were all tracking his trip! wow!!! time sure flies!!!

Rusty is looking pretty good though! hope he surfs the greens for you later!!!

glad to know everyone is ALRIGHT! that must have been pretty scary!!!

happy Sunday!

Re: 12/12 Rusty AMPS 145

Wow, Ella, you sure know how to throw a party! It sounds like both you and Rusty are very level-headed. He proceeded calmly right under the bed, where kitties are supposed to go in an emergency. I think of your big boy often, and miss his sweet face. I like checking his condo daily to see how well he is doing, and to get glimpses of the idyllic life in the Adirondacks.

Re: 12/12 Rusty AMPS 145

awww Rusty, I miss you too!! thank u for the condo visit Ella!

And so glad everything and everybody is ok after last nite!
So.... were the firemen hot?
I'm so jealous Rusty is being sociable with the guests. He was quite the talker with Linda and I when we had the road trip.
Doing so well with your BG's Rusty!! Keep it up and continue to be a good boy!

Re: 12/12 Rusty AMPS 145

What a night, I'd say not a bad AMPS considering the stress. What a good kitty Rusty is, and so social! Did he go to the firemen and give head butts in thanks? I don't see Tess for hours if anyone comes to the house!

Re: 12/12 Rusty AMPS 145

i was commenting on rusty's response, and binks shared a little insight with me...
he says that on the first gathering rusty attended, your fellow stepped out, introduced himself to each cat in turn...and didnt even bat an eyelash at binks velcro undies...
another cat with panache in your home, ella!

Re: 12/12 Rusty AMPS 145, +4 82

Yep, I guess he's seen just about everything in his adventurous life. Binks' attire was, well, Binks' attire!

Coming down nicely at +4.

To answer the firemen question: one of them was about 6'7". They were all friendly and competent. They had a remarkable hand-held heat detector that could find hot spots through the walls and that allowed them to "see" the chimney through the walls, all the way up to its top. Very impressive. Rusty didn't interact with the firemen, but he was a great host when the guests got here.

Thanks, everyone, for your concern. We are OK. We are just hoping that the rain we are having now doesn't turn into an ice storm. We are not allowed to use our wood stove until the town inspects it. And that would be our source of heat if the power goes out!!

Back later,
Ella & Rusty

Re: 12/12 Rusty AMPS 145, +4 82

Wow! Ella, I'm so glad you are all alright and little damage was done. How frightening! I'm glad to hear your evening of guests went on though and that Rusty was socialable. What a sweetie he is! Happy 2 Week Annifursary!

Re: 12/12 Rusty AMPS 145, +4 82

Ella,

It was a good thing that the fire was put out fast. I'm sure the firemen gave you piece of mind that there were no hot spots in the walls. Man that is scary. Rusty did great though. Coming out and being socialable with your guests.

Happy Two Weeks To You, Edward, and Rusty!! You make such the complete little family. He's such a good boy. And I hear you on all the hair. Sara has a lot of hair and it's thick too. But you've also got more ear hair to tend with. :-D

Have a good day and I hope you have a relaxing night.

jan and sara

Re: 12/12 Rusty AMPS 145, +4 82

Gosh...in all my Christmas decorating, I missed the fire. Holy Cow!!! I'm so glad you all are ok. Poor Rusty...no wonder he's a little stressed today. I hope the dinner party went well after all that!! I'm sure the whole thing unnerved you all. You'll get back to your better pokeys soon. Bummer on not being able to use the woodstove until it's inspected and it's getting colder. I hope you have a less eventful day!!

Re: 12/12 Rusty AMPS 145, +4 82, +8 121 (new box of strips)

Hi again,
Rusty was "resting" for most of the morning and early afternoon, but after the +8 test he ate some treats and a little more food and we had a good play with "Big Bug". This morning I finished the box of test strips I had started in early July (when experimenting with the new meter--Walmart ReliOn Mini--with Stu). I decided not to use the Mini then, because Stu was more used to the ReliOn Ultima and its strips. The blood sample required by the Mini is less than the one required by the Ultima, so I have been using the Mini with Rusty (who is hard to get blood from). The test strips are supposed to "expire" 6 months after the seal on the box is broken, so by my estimate that would be at the end of December and the box I just finished would have still been good. Do strips get less reliable when they reach their expiration date? I'm wondering if I will be getting a different range of numbers with the box of strips I just began with the +8 test.
We'll see what his PMPS looks like, but given the disruption caused by the fire, I suspect that I won't get any "representative" readings until tomorrow. Sorry for "thinking" out loud!!

Ella

Re: 12/12 Rusty AMPS 145, +4 82, +8 121 (new box of strips)

I can't speak to other strips, but I can tell you about Contour:
Let's just say I had several hundred left over when Donovan went OTJ in March .
I continued to use them - even the ones that allegedly expired in March 2010. I noticed some wonky numbers in Oct/Nov (mid-blues), and wondered if they had finally pooped out. I checked the test solution, and that was slightly out of range, but it had expired as well. After multiple unsuccessful bids on eBay, I won some newer test strips. But guess what.... I compared them side by side from the same drop of blood and got the same number. So perhaps *some* of the old strips are fubar, but most seem fine. Huh.

Re: 12/12 Rusty AMPS 145, +4 82, +8 121 (new box of strips)

As I understand it, the test strips "age" when exposed to air and especially moisture. So -- if you keep the vial shut at much as possible, and it is not really hot and humid - they should last pretty good.

Re: 12/12 Rusty AMPS 145, +4 82, +8 121 (new box of strips)

this is relevant only to what jan said...but i'm curious here...

when she mentioned "more ear hair to contend with"...it was in reference to RUSTY'S ears, right?

Re: 12/12 Rusty AMPS 145, +4 82, +8 121 (new box of strips)

Thanks, guys,
The vial was shut tightly for 5 months, so I guess the strips were OK. It'll be interesting to see how the new box compares.

Celi, as you have surmised ;-) the "ear hair" refers to Rusty's. But of course the hair Jan referred to is on the inside of his ears, and we test on the outside (where the hair is what I would consider "normal" ).

Re: 12/12 Rusty AMPS 145, +4 82, +8 121 (new box of strips)

You had more excitement that you needed last night! Geez. And Rusty is certainly a trooper!

Re: 12/12 Rusty AMPS 145, +4 82, +8 121, PMPS 122

So glad all is well after your excitement last night. Maybe Rusty is just reacting to all that happened. He is doing well. See what tomorrow brings. His numbers have been very good. He is one lucky kitty. Have a good night. Stay warm.

Nighttime story: We were watching a movie on TV. Rusty really wanted us to pack it in and go to bed. So he pointedly went upstairs. Then came back down and practically demanded his test!! bg=80 (good!). Then the treats (gobbled up), and the nighttime food put out. And now he is waiting on the bed so that we can go to sleep!! What a great cat!

Good night all!

Ella & Rusty
