Happy Friday, friends! I have an annoying early afternoon meeting to get through before I can really relax, but I'm so grateful the week is almost over. Ready to spend tomorrow cozily at home with my boy. He's stayed a little lower (not topping 400 except briefly between hours a few times since the start of his PM cycle last night), which is some comfort. No yellows either, though.

Wishing everyone a pleasant day, and a safe surf for your kitties! ❤️

I presume you gave 1 unit this morning? Units cell is blank.;) If you don't see any green by morning, you can increase back to 1.25 units. Good timing with the weekend.

... well, THAT wasn't fun.

I was just getting ready for bed when I suddenly noticed a big round swelling on the side of Gen's face. I know it wasn't there this morning. I could swear it wasn't there when I got home from work.

So instead of going to bed, I got the poor boy loaded into his carrier and off to the emergency vet we went (via a very overly air freshened Lyft, blech). Long story short: it's a dental abscess, they gave us antibiotics and anti-inflammatories and sent us home. The whole thing took two hours including the rides, after which I managed to give him most of his first dose of the meds by virtue of mixing the crushed pills with only a very small amount of wet food, with some freeze-dried tuna mixed in, carefully placed atop the REST of the (unmixed) canned food in his bowl and topping that with more crumbled dried tuna. (Because he will never, ever eat a whole can in one go, but giving him a small amount of wet food on its own historically has made him suspicious and he's refused to touch it at all.)

It worked. I can't be sure he got all of the medication, but I'm fairly sure he got most of it. Which would make this my most successful non-insulin med administration ever. I hope I can keep it up.

And now, at long last, I am going to go fall on my face in bed. My poor, poor boy. (And poor me too, tbh.)

Also this weirdo's BG was actually lower at the hospital than it is now that we're home. I don't understand. Maybe it'll make more sense int he morning.

Aww i'm sorry you had such an eventful night, you're an awesome caretaker though! I hope you get some good rest now 😴

Poor boy, and poor you! Inflammation/infection can definitely raise the BG numbers.

What type of antibiotics and anti inflammatories did you get? I like to give probiotics when giving antibiotics, or you can get upset tummy. Give the two a couple hours apart.

Ugh! Thank goodness you were able to get him in and treated quickly. Will they need to remove the tooth?? Or is there a follow-up? Having just gone through the side effects of (two) antibiotics, etc. with Jude, I second Wendy's point about antibiotics and probiotics. I've been using this, and it's worked well for us: probiotic with s.boulardii+ Hope you both were able to get some rest and that he is feeling better soon.

I was given betacilin (apparently amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium), to be given every 12 hours, and onsior (robenacoxib), to be given every 24. The vet told me it was fine to give them together, and given the way I have managed to introduce the pills into his eating habits (making sure he takes them by mixing them with a small top portion of the food I give him every twelve hours, so he eats that part right away) ... I hope it will be okay to continue to do so. He tends to balk when I try to get him to do anything too out of the ordinary, food-wise.

So he got both last night after we got home, and then this morning another dose of the betacilin. I plan to give him both this evening again. His appetite has been normal so far, but I'll see about getting a probiotic right away. (I did ask the vet about anti-nausea meds and she didn't seem to think he'd need them. I didn't think of probiotics at the time.)

Having just gone through the side effects of (two) antibiotics, etc., Wendy's points about antibiotics and probiotics are very important. The fact that he needs surgery/extractions as soon as possible was already established, but my (regular) vet wants him to be a little more regulated before doing that. Not sure if this will change anything about our timetable. My vet's office is closed on weekends, so I won't be able to discuss it with her until Monday.

Thank you for the probiotic recommendation!
