12/11 Wesson AMPS 442 Don't think he got PM shot

Started on Lantus yesterday with a AMPS of 390, +4 351, PMPS 299, +5 394, AMPS 442

I'm guessing this means he did not get the PM shot?

Kitties can be all over the place when first starting insulin. Unless you felt wetness around the shot site and/or smelled the insulin, he probably got his insulin.

Please enter the dose on your spreadsheet. It gives in the U column. You might also want to leave space between when you were testing and the first day of insulin or write NS in all the U boxes prior to starting. The depot takes about 7 cycles to build. Why do you think he didn’t get the PM shot? Since we dose based upon the nadir, lowest point, it would be good to get a test each cycle between +4-7.

Did not smell insulin and the fur was not wet. Just figured I didn't get it in because he had a drop yesterday from the AM shot and did not have a drop in the PM shot. I did test at +4 for AM shot and +5 for PM shot.

Fixed the spreadsheet too.

Thanks. Give the depot time to fill. After 7 days and a curve done by you we will know next steps.

Hello and welcome to this forum. Make sure you read the yellow starred Sticky Notes at the top. Take your time, there is a LOT of information. And keep asking questions, we love to help here.

Now it's my turn for questions. ;) Are you giving insulin at night? If so, you need to fill in the U or units column for the PM cycle too. As for why his numbers went the wrong way last night, it looks like he went under 300 at some point during the day yesterday. That's lower than his body is used to lately and caused what we affectionately here call a "bounce". From the New to the Group Sticky Note:
Bouncing is simply a natural reaction to what the cat's system perceives as a BG value that is "too low". "Too low" is relative. If a cat is used to BGs in the 200's, 300's, or higher for a long time, then even a BG that drops to 150 can trigger a "bounce". Bouncing can also be triggered if the blood glucose drops too low and/or too fast. The pancreas, then the liver, release glucogon, glycogen and counter-regulatory hormones. The end result is a dumping of "sugar" into the bloodstream to save the cat from going hypoglycemic from a perceived low. The action is often referred to as "liver panic" or "panicky liver". *Usually*, a bounce will clear kitty's system within 3 days (6 cycles).

Hugely annoying for caregivers and very common in newly diagnosed cats, and even some not so new. Over time his body will get used to lower numbers and not bounce as much.

Yes, he is getting insulin at night. Updated the spreadsheet. I read about the bounce but wasn't sure if that was it or not. Just figured I didn't get the shot in ;)
