Yes. There is no ball. It sheared off when she was 5 months old when my dd fell on her.
They had to remove it. So there is just the femur with no ball... no real bone contact in her pelvic socket. That leg is supported by her muscle and tendons.
So the question is... what's in there now?
Is it all bone remodeling from osteoarthritis , and maybe a bone fragment OR is it cancer?

i'm not even one bit experienced at reading x-rays, although i find it really interesting. but my first thought is that anytime you have a joint injury or broken bone, that area is very likely to develop arthritis.

I'm thinking positive thoughts for you both!

With my limited knowledge of hip issues in DOGS (4 of them now) and looking at their xrays, IMHO ONLY - this resembles advanced osteoarthritis with some remodeling. The older the injury, the longer it's had to build up...

I'm SO hoping that's all this is...

BIG HUGS,

Wow. Whatever it is, it looks gritchy and uncomfortable. I hope it's not the C word. Hoping for the best for you guys!

I'm no help either Rhiannon, but I like Lyresa's opinion. I'm going to continue thinking the most positive thoughts for you and Shadow :YMHUG:

Paws crossed it's just arthritis. Not that that isn't a painful thing too, but hopefully not the C word :YMHUG:

It sounds like Shadown had an FHO procedure

I dognapped a very overweight beagle from my parents years ago (he weighed 63lbs when I got him...took several years, but he spent the rest of his life at 29-31lbs), but because of the strain on his hips, he broke the head of the femur.

What they did was cut the head off and scar tissue develops where the old head was, and within 3-4 months post op, he was chasing squirrels with the best of them. As he aged though, that joint became pretty arthritic, so I'm with everyone else..although we're not able to "read" the x-ray, we're all hoping it's just arthritic changes in that joint.

Hoping for the best for Shadow!

All fingers, toes and eyes crossed for a good diagnosis that doesn't involve the C word. Tiki sends Shadow a head nudge of encouragement and a snuggle.

Rhiannon - I'm sorry Shadow is having problems. Hershey broke his hip (fan fell on him) when he was little and they told us to expect arthritis to develop in that area. So, maybe that's what it is. I know it's difficult to wait for all the information, but try not to borrow trouble. Praying for peace for you and comfort for Shadow.

HUGS -

Libby (& Hershey, too!)
