We're at the end of 3 days at .25U as suggested.
Should we stay at that? Errol has been on wet food for 4 1/2 days and I am sure I can see a difference - he's feeling better in himself. He has a day where he's quite active and then the next is quieter. I guess I just have to be patient and let his body get used to the assistance of insulin for a few weeks before he starts going back to his old self.

To all the kitties and their carers who aren't feeling so well - sending lots of healing thoughts and wishes your way.

Re: 12/11 Errol PMPS 187 +2 81

Hello Michelle - I don't think I've stopped in before to welcome you and sweet Errol.

That's quite the drop to the +2 number. I'd get a test in the next 1/2-1 hour to see what he has planned tonight. With the nadirs Errol is showing you now, I would stay at this dose unless he shows you otherwise by going under 50. He's actually looking really good. :-D :-D

Welcome Michele & Errol! I'm glad you're posting here now. Errol is looking great :-D

I notice sometimes when my cat is in very good numbers she spends the day sleeping very soundly, as if the feeling good gives her an opportunity to catch up on some healing sleep. Other times she is more in the mood to explore and play. Cats will be cats after all, and no two days are ever the same!

Thank you Wendy & Neko  I'll check him again in an hour then :-D

Thank you Amy & Papaya :-D That's a great observation, for the past couple days I've seen Errol sleep during the day with his arm over his face - tight asleep - compared to when he's not well and just lying down.

Thank Kim & Twice :-D It's such a relief to see him looking far happier. Boy he had me worried, still does, but I feel some hope now. Especially with this great message board to give advice. I shudder to think where we'd be without you all :-|
I'll be checking in at 22h30 my time - in 30 mins!

Have a great day all of you!

Re: 12/11 Errol PMPS 187 +2 81

Sounds like he's surfing.  That's within 10% of his previous reading so probably within meter variance. Good idea to test again in an hour. If he gets any lower, you might want to give him a little low carb snack (small spoonful of his regular food).

Re: 12/11 Errol PMPS 187 +2 81

He was pestering for food now, after not being that hungry today (he ate his breakfast and dinner which I gave him a little extra of because of not being around) so I gave him a tablespoon of LC wet food. I hope that won't influence the reading in an hour too much.

Re: 12/11 Errol PMPS 187 +2 81

Often a small snack of low carb food will help them "get on their surfboard", meaning get them into nice flat numbers. The more time Errol can spend in these healing numbers, the better. We just don't want to give too much food at once, in case they continue to drop and we really need them to eat higher carb food later.

A small request, could you update the subject line on your first post with Errol's latest numbers. It helps those of us scanning the board to see the latest.

Re: 12/11 Errol PMPS 187 [+4] 95

Aha, that's great. He is not pleased being poked every hour. We'll get a couple hours sleep and test again :-D
I will update. Thanks!

:YMHUG: to the folks on this board who are so helpful, supportive and just darned right full of knowledge about FD! Give yourselves a huge pat on the back.

hi michele!

anytime you shoot a number lower than you have before, you want to get a +1 and +2 to make sure errol's not diving. with this morning's preshot of 88, we just want to make sure he keeps holding in safe numbers (above 50.) if he drops below 50, i know you know how to pull him up so he's surfing over 50. i'd encourage you to check those first 2 times and see how many points per hour he's dropping, if he is. you're at a phase where he's doing really well and you'll want to monitor frequently to make sure he stays safe.

errol's doing so great. i wish your day was our day so we could coach you while we're awake! hang in there!

Hello Julie!
Ok, I'll hopefully be able to do a +1 more often. With Lantus being a long acting insulin, would the +1 show a significant difference to the +2?
yes, the time difference is a bind.

If a cat is getting a good duration from the insulin, it is possible that the low is after PS. When Neko was on Lantus, she would often have a cycle where her numbers just got lower and lower all cycle - we call it sliding. I have seen her nadir at +13, and I caught it with a +1 test.

If you want to look at Twice\s ss on Nov 26 it shows a decent difference between PS +1 and +2. When I first came on this forum I spent some time looking at other kitty ss's to see how different cats react to insulin.. It was pretty eye opening. In our case, the +2 test was a life saver more than once because I could see him heading into a dive, and he rarely disappointed
You are doing fabulous job! I love how well Errol is responding to the insulin.
Have a great night :-D

wow when I look at where Twice has come from - some blacks and reds to all greens, that's wonderful. Very inspiring!! Ooh yes, I see he went down to 2.7 on the 26th, very scary.

Wendy, what would sliding be from? Too little insulin or cat not responding to it properly?

Hi Michelle. It looks like Errol is doing good and you're getting the hang of things. I hope he'll keep surfing for you tonight.

Hi Carfurby  I must say I've gotten over the initial shock and am trying to think of one day at a time.
