I fattened her drop a tiny bit last night and we were looking better this morning. Urine sample STILL shows signs of infection. My Vet has called the University to see if they have any ideas because she apparently doesn't know what to do at this point. She started out on Clavamox...which made her stop eating. Took her in and they did bloodwork etc. and changed her to baytril. 1 week later recheck showed infection...they did xrays and sent off a sterile sample to be cultured. Sample did not grow any bacteria. Resumed Baytril while waiting for those results...and then continued on baytril for another round after getting them which puts us where we are today. I don't even know what to say at this point. :-|

It could be non-bacterial cystitis - an irritation, not infection, of the bladder lining which may cause bleeding.

Amanda...what do you mean when you say "still shows infection"? When I think of infection, I think of bacteria. Gracie has had interstitial cystitis most of her life...no bacteria, no crystals. As BJM suggested, inflammation. Every few weeks she would start running to the LB, peeing small amounts with blood in it. It would take a few days to resolve. We finally found out she had high levels of aluminum in her and we've detoxed her. So far, she has not had any IC since last Maymajor anti jinx. Another thing to consider is pyelonephritis (kidney infection). My older civvie, Teddi, had this with absolutely no bacteria in a sterile culture. It was found on U/S...the reason we did it was because her creat went up and our vet wanted to see if her kidneys were getting small and shrivelled. On the converse, her kidneys looked like those of a young cat but there was some dilation indicating pyelonephritis. Not all cats will show an increase in creat, tho, due to this. After a month on ABs, Teddi's totally cleared up and her creat is normal. It's just a thought...something to ask the vet.

I will have to ask exactly what it means - I know last time they said there was blood in her urine and I want to say white blood cells. But when they sent in a sterile culture it did not grow bacteria. As far as I can tell she isn't running to the LB constantly, and when she goes it is a normal amount and she is in there a normal amount of time. Xray showed no stones, and urine cultures have showed no crystals. We have run full bloodwork on her twice - the first time they said she was slightly anemic. Second Vet was worried about that and did another test when I brought her in a week later...she was not anemic. BUT she did have slightly eleow isvated liver values - nothing the vet was concerned with. Everything else looked great.

How is Non-Bacterial Cystitis treated?

When they took the sterile sample, how long had Kazi been off of any antibiotic? If there wasn't a sufficiently long period (1 - 2 weeks) between finishing a course of ABs and the cytocentesis you can get a false negative on the culture.

Non bacterial cystitis (interstitial cystitis) is not always easy to treat esp if you don't know the cause. And the causes can vary from allergies (usually fish and/or grains) to stress (big one). That's the problem we had with Gracie...for over 3 years, we could not find the cause and finally resorted to steroids because NOTHING else worked. Hence, we are here in FDMB. It finally took a vet who did nutrition response testing to find out she had high aluminum levels probably got in utero from her mom being overvaccinated. IC is a form of feline lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD). There is a yahoo group with a very knowledgable moderator. It's usually diagnosed by ruling out everything else. Definitely worth discussing with your vet. But Sienne made a very good point, too.

Sienne-- I would say it was probably 5 days at most. I'll bring that up with my vet tomorrow when they call.

I would be surprised if it is allergies...she is not a cat that alternates between foods and has been on her current food since dx in March. She has had urinalysis done within the last 2.5 months and that was clear. I suppose anything is possible though.

Thanks for the support and suggestions...they are much appreciated.

Allergies can develop and remit over time, so not having any known allergies before doesn't rule out that something has developed now. I had a civvie who developed a bald belly from food allergies after being fine for many years. Also, allergic response involves the immunine system ... and autoimmune attack on the pancrease can be one of the reasons diabetes develops.

Amanda...you might cross post on Health too....maybe other eyes will have some suggestions for you....
I hope you can get to the bottom of this...sounds involved...sending hugs to you both... :YMHUG: :YMHUG:
