oh, his poor ears do look miserable. Let's try to figure out how to help them. No wonder he's yelped.
Are you trying to hit the vein? you want to just hit the edge of the ear, not the vein - the vein is more painful.
They look bruised. If you apply pressure after you've gotten the test, that can help prevent the bleeding that causes the bruising. I'd poke, touch the test strip, then immediately apply pressure with a bit of tissue. We cut up paper towels into small strips and had a pile of them along with the test supplies in a bowl next to the sofa where we tested punkin. Even 10 seconds might be enough to prevent bruising.
Do you have the "
Where Can I Find?" thread bookmarked? In the bottom section there is a post on "
Testing and Shooting Tips" with a picture of where you want to try to poke. There are lots of tips on that thread that might help you.
I'd avoid his right ear for a day or so - it looks especially bad. You can move the poking spot up or down along the edge, although avoid the cartilage in the lower part of his ear.
Has anyone suggested the Neosporin ointment with pain relief for you? The pain relief is amazing - try it on yourself. I put it on my foot where the cats had run across and scratched me and it worked incredibly well. Completely took the owie out. The ointment is greasy and that helps prevent the blood from soaking into the surrounding hair and skin after you've poked. Makes it easier to bead up and be able to draw it into the test strip.
Some people put it on 20 minutes before poking to numb the area a bit. I always put it on at the end of every day - I put a generous amount on (the directions say 'slather') and in the morning wiped off the excess. It will goo up the strip if you don't wipe most of it off.
Punkin's ear was like new every morning and we used the same ear for 2.5 years and you would never have known he was tested multiple times every day. Vets always looked at his ear and marveled at how good it looked - i think it was apply pressure and using the neosporin.
If those tips don't help his ear, mention it again and let's see if we can figure out what will help him! Good luck!
