12/09 Bid PMBG 40

Hi everyone...

So Bid had a Vet appointment last night **hopefully his last for a while** She did his yearly exam and his rabies shot (Which she did do in his lower back, thank god).. Bid's BG has been in the lower 40's for the past few days.. we haven't tested him every day but when we do it's always in the 40's.. The Vet is kind of mystified at why his BG is so low. We did do a test at the Vet with her meter and our meter and his BG on hers was 63 and on ours was 42. She did say she felt bad we had a bottle of insulin at home that I don't really know if he even needed.

Then she threw out scary things like pancreatic cancer or something can cause low BG's.. She said she isn't sure that's what it is since Bid is acting normal but I don't know...

Jenn --

It looks like you're doing an OTJ trial whether it was officially initiated or not. I can't even remember how Bid was diagnosed but he sure doesn't seem to want to stay on insulin. Here's what you need to be doing right now:

• Test at your normal AMPS and PMPS times. Feed multiple small meals throughout the day as much as possible (small meals are less likely to overwhelm a newly functioning pancreas).
  
• If he is green at your normal test times, no need to test further until the next "PS" time, just feed small meals and go about your day. If he is blue, feed a small meal and test again after about 3 hours. If his number is lower 3-4 hours after a meal, then his pancreas is working!
  
• Sometimes the trial doesn't work the first time and we have to give a little more support in the form of resuming insulin. It's not the end of the world if that happens, we just give him the support he needs. Our goal is a strong remission and it's better to take our time to get that than to rush into remission just to have it fail later on.

It seems that this is your Day 10 already Jenn...so you can post his numbers as AMBG and PMBG....

Congratulations! Bummer on the wasted vial of insulin, but small price to pay for OTJ so soon. There are a number things that can temporarily elevate BGs and that may have been the case for BID when he was dx. Keep testing and soon you can make it official.

I'm so happy to hear Bid is still kicking BUTT!!!!! I'd feel bad buying insulin I didn't need (and not using it) but a whole lot worse giving it when it wasn't needed.

Your vet is just trying to save her ego! Sh's got a big one I think. Maverick was managed with diet alone for 9 months. Without starting insulin first. And we did a fructosamine test because he gets so stressed at the vets office any BG reading wouldn't have been accurate.

I think you need to give credit where credit is due. Your taking care of Bid - you've done an amazing job. Switching to Low carb food. Home testing. Bid responding to what you've done - a lot of it is his body doing a good job too. And your friends here.

I think you should not depend on this vet for FD management. She is scary. I wonder how many cats go hypo on her and have severe crises that she blames on other things.

Do you know what type of meter the vet used, if it was the animal calibrated Alpha Track, they are always about 20 points higher, just a different calibration.

WOW - Bid is doing great! Congrats on day 10 of trial.

I am sorry that your vet had to throughout scary thoughts that are more than likely unwarranted.

I hope you will continue to post daily through this trial, so we can celebrate Bid being OTJ. Congrats to you both, and to all you have done for Bid. Very nice!

Doing great here! And I'm glad you didn't need to use very much of that vial of insulin even though you had to buy it. That is an annoyance I'd take any day over actually needing it for a lot longer.

I ordered 2 new boxes of syringes and other supplies that arrived the week my kitty went OTJ and I ruefully laughed at myself. But I was so happy about the OTJ, that I didn't care. I bet you feel the same!

Jenn I was wondering what was going on with you and Bid. I'm so relieved and happy he is doing so great. WOW day 10. I so agree with everything that's been said. Lots of kitties fed the right diet go off insulin. I think Bid was so not wanting all those pokies and jabs he said enough is enough :lol:
For whatever reason Bid is off insulin you did it that very instant you searched for online help and it was there. Shame on the vet saying such scary things. :-x There are lots of kitties with low BGs. BTW silly vetty 60s are normal for some cats ohmygod_smile
GREAT WORK. I hope you post every day too I will enjoy seeing his BGs and count down the days.....

So you guys don't think I should be worried about his BG being in the low 40's? And even 38 this morning? Yea the Vet brought up something on cancer but also said since he's acting normal that its probably not that.. But she said that him not being diabetic anymore his BG shouldn't go up based on eating.. I don't know.

She did say that she has been there for 20 years and that she has never seen a cat get diabetes from a steroid shot and since he got his cortisone shot on 10/21 then we realized he was drinking more around 11/20 that it seems he did get it from the steroid shot.. But she said this is the first time shes every seen that.

I haven't been the one to do his ear poke in a while and I did it this morning and it was another rough morning.. He did not want to sit still and it took a few pokes :cry:

And yes it may suck to have the wasted insulin and spend the money but I would take that over Bid being healthy any day!!!!

Yes the Vet used the animal Alpha Track.. That's the one she wanted use to get for $180!!

And I only give credit to all the wonderful people on this board and my husband and I for Bid doing so well!! I can't even imagine what would have happened if I hadn't found this website!!!

Your vet may have limited experience with feline diabetes! There are any number of cats here with steroid induced diabetes and it's common in humans, as well. Every animal's BG rises in the presence of food. There may not be wild swings, but food raises BG causing the pancreas to release insulin which then facilitates the migration of glucose into the cell. It's basic biochemistry/physiology. The bottom line is that Bid is doing great!!
