Furball doesn't want to eat this morning. Someone threw up again last night and I highly suspect it was Furball from the Clavamox pill. I don't understand why the liquid Clavamox didn't bother her, but the pills do. She hates taking liquid. I was hoping she could take the pills with no problem. Plus the liquid is sweetened. I'll have to call the vet this morning because they close at noon today and aren't open tomorrow. Does anyone know why the pill would bother her, but the liquid didn't?

I finally coaxed Furball into eating some of MC's food. They get the same thing. Maybe she's thinking her food is making her sick.

Re: 12/07 Furball AMPS=237 Clavamox ?

Good Morning Carla ~O)

Come on Furball! Time to eat your yumdelicious fuds! Mmmmm....so yummy. Here comes the choo choo....
I am not sure why the pills would affect her over the liquid. It sounds like maybe her belly hurts though. Are you giving a probiotic with the AB?
Hope the vet can give you something to help :-D

Re: 12/07 Furball AMPS=237 Clavamox ?

Hi Carla,

Not sure why liquid wouldn't bother her, but pill would. Are you giving it after she has some food in her tummy? not on an empty stomach? If not, you could try that if you can adjust your pill time. I have never had the luck to have an AB have no bad effect on a kitty. Hope you vet can suggest what to do. Hate to see them feel worse from something that is supposed to help them cat_pet_icon cat_pet_icon

Re: 12/07 Furball AMPS=237 Clavamox ?

J.D. had Clavamox before his first dental and was throwing up. After that dental and for his second dental, he was switched to Clindamycin and he did much better. It's still always tough when on ABs. Timing the ABs after eating, waiting to give the probiotics and the usually needed appetite stimulant. It's always such a relief when the ABs are finished. I hope your vet today can help you.

Re: 12/07 Furball AMPS=237 Clavamox ?

Liquids and pills are absorbed differently. The pill has to get into the stomach where stomach acid dissolves the pill. Some antibiotics actually need the acid environment of the stomach to work but it can also mean that the interaction of the pill and the stomach acid causes an upset stomach. You might ask your vet if you can try feeding Furball an hour or two before giving the AB. I'd also try putting the AB in a pil pocket or some other form of food (e.g., some cheese, chicken, etc.) to see if that helps.

Re: 12/07 Furball AMPS=237 Clavamox ?

Thanks everyone. I didn't get any instructions from the vet other than to give Furball the pill every 12 hours. I was giving it to her the same time I was feeding her. This morning I gave it to her a couple of hours after I managed to get her to eat. I won't be able to do that when I have to go back to work on Monday. The latest I can give it to her after she eats is about 30 minutes. I am putting it in a piece of a pill pocket. I sprinkle fortiflora on her food. I don't know what kind of probiotic I could give her after the AB. The only thing I've ever used is fortiflora. I also can't give her anything later in the mornings on work days.

I am waiting on a call back from the vet's office. No one was available when I called. They were all with patients.

Re: 12/07 Furball AMPS=237 Clavamox ?

The vet called me back. She agreed it is the Clavamox making Furball throw up. She said to stop the Clavamox. She wants her to be eating and healthy before the dental. She said we can take care of giving her an AB after the dental. I mentioned to her that I have some Antirobe Aquadrops leftover from MC's dental and asked if she wanted me to give that to Furball. She said I didn't have to, but if I wanted to try it I could, but if it causes her to throw up or not eat to stop them. Does anyone know if the Antirobe Aquadrops has sweetener in it?

Furball was happy & purry this evening and ate good. She did throw up a little from the Clavamox this morning. Since the vet was okay with not giving her an AB before her dental, I'm not going to try the Antirobe Aquadrops. I want her to be healthy and feeling good before the dental.

Oh Carla,
I am sorry Furball wasn't doing good this morning, but so glad that she's happy and purry this evening. :-D
