At the vet's when she was first diagnosed, she was 10 lbs. Since then, she's gone up to 13 lbs., and then is now 10.5 lbs. (today's weight). This morning's AMPS # isn't surprising because she was fed about 5 minutes later than normal. I'm beginning to wonder if I should be feeding her at +5 in the evening, too, instead of +4.5. According to the formula, she should be getting 0.90 oz. of Evo 95% C&T 6x/day to maintain a healthy weight of 10 lbs. That's 206 calories/day. She's also getting 0.50 oz. steamed chicken 2x day, which isn't all that many calories to begin with.

QUESTION: Can anyone make heads or tails out of this anomoly? I don't want to be starving her, either, and judging by the amount that I was previously giving her, it looked like that I was.

MY WISH: For God to help those ailing (especially Tawny and Weezer) make a full and speedy recovery... For God to help heal the broken hearts of those who lost a beloved pet and/or human... For everyone to have great #s... For everyone to be OTJ.

Re: 12/07 Blackie AMPS 115

Blackie can probably answer the question better than a formula can. Each of us, beans and kitties alike, are unique. If Blackie was doing well on what you were feeding her, healthy, not gaining or losing weight, glucose under control, you were probably feeding just the right amount for her. Even if it might not have been the right amount for a neighbor’s kitty, who happened to weigh the same. With FD we are so focused on the numbers, sometimes we might need to step back, just half a step, to see the bigger picture. What does Blackie have to say about her diet?

Giving her the 0.50 oz. Evo 95% C&T 6x a day.. She looked like she was losing a bit too much weight... Definitely had a pronounced waistline, you can feel her ribs with barely pressing in, but her spine was nicely covered, though.

She definitely loves her Evo, and I am always rewarded with a clean bowl. Since her #s are starting to settle down, she's not bugging me as much for food. In fact, I had to rouse her from her napping yesterday 20 minutes before her PMPS test, and shot.

I don't know...

Re: 12/07 Blackie AMPS 115

Hi Angela & Blackie,

I think that 0.9 oz. at each feeding sounds about right for what you are trying to do. Has she gained weight since you started to bring her up from the 0.5 oz that you were mistakenly feeding her? 0.9 is just about a 5.5 oz can a day (I think; I'm a math cripple!), so that is certainly within "maintenance" feeding guidelines. Rusty (who weighs 16 lb. 10 oz.) gets about 7 or 8 oz. a day and is maintaining his weight. Actually, I was trying to get him down a little, but now that the cold weather is here, that's hard!

Good luck!

Ella & Rusty

p.s. Blackie and Rusty are AMPS buddies this morning.

Re: 12/07 Blackie AMPS 115, +4.5 77

Shnookie, my one-time 22 lb-er was eating 12oz of mostly FF Elegant Medleys per day. I've cut him down to 9oz and he's been losing weight quite nicely. I'm looking for him to lose 8oz a month. However, this last 2 week period, he lost 8oz, so I've added another snack of about 1.5oz for the time being. I don't want him losing that quickly. I try to weigh him every week or 2, but that's the only way I have of really knowing if I'm feeding a good amt. He would eat however much he was allowed to, so I can't go off of his demands. Do you weigh Blackie regularly? IMHO that's the only way to really know. Another example, I keep track of the kitten's weight along with Shnookie's (Cleetus has a fat belly, and is obviously built differently than Oscar and I was concerned he was TOO fat) and over that same 2 week period they each LOST 3oz. At 7 months old, I don't think they should be losing weight, so I added a snack for them as well. Again, it's a small amt and I would never have known if I weren't weighing them all the time.

Re: 12/07 Blackie AMPS 115, +4.5 77

Binks eats about 6 oz 3% food a day...
and doesn't gain or lose.....

AMPS 115, 1.00u, 0.80 oz. Evo 95% C&T
+2 - 0.80 oz. Evo 95% C&T
+3.5 - 0.80 oz. Evo 95% C&T
+4 77
+5 - 0.50 oz. steamed chicken
PMPS 129, 1.00u, 0.80 oz. Evo 95% C&T
+2 70 - 0.80 oz. Evo 95% C&T
+3 61 - 0.80 oz. Evo 95% C&T
+4.5 - 0.50 oz. steamed chicken

Blackie's numbers are looking great!!

At this point, if you felt Blackie was a little too thin, then increasing the amount you're feeding makes good sense. I would just keep good records of what you're doing -- amounts and the calories. It sounds like you have a scale at home so get a weight every couple of weeks. If Blackie is gaining that's fine. You'll probably need to readjust the amount you're feeding once Blackie gets to her target weight.

As far as when you're feeding, there's not a "preferred" set of times. It's generally trial and error so if you think that moving a snack time will have a positive effect on Blackie's numbers, give it a try. Again, just keep good notes so you'll be able to evaluate the effect of what you're doing and give any change at least 2 weeks to see if it's working the way you want.
