AMPS 339 .9U
+9 188

I had to be out all day and was not able to get a mid cycle reading. When I came home, she was under the blanket where I had last seen her at 11AM, and does not appear to have eaten much or maybe not at all, I am not sure. And BG 188! Wondering what it will be at +12 and what I should shoot. Will she zoom from the low? How low was she? She is eating now.

I'm glad Squamee is eating. I often wish that I had the interior of our house rigged with live feed video cameras so I could see what Klinger does or doesn't do while I'm at work.
Looking forward to seeing the PMPS.

I vote for .7u. I have no good reasoning for that other than hopefully not losing too much ground if lowing that much is not the right choice, it's good to see her under 300 and .7u at 250 is not a large amount of insulin [unless she is not eating]. It seems like the turkey party is subsiding?

Wednesday is my late shot night so I wasn't sure I'd get home in time.

I took a quick look back at a similar number and the dose and she went a little high the next day, that's all, although with Squamee EDID Every Day is Different. Plus you said she hadn't eaten alot.

Or it could be that I'm a little nervous and gun shy myself tonight because Harley gave me a 145 +13 and I've been trying to decide what to do myself, cut the dose in half? don't shoot? ACK!

Wow. That's a hard call. Harley did that on .5? at +13? What does your gut say? I think it's the +13 that gets to me.Does longer that 12 hours mean the pancreas is working?

Do try to get some food in her before you lights out. I think sick kitties have then propensity to kind of go hide and the forget that they need to eat. I know that's what F is doing currently and I know with H if I'd shoot and he would just go and hang out in his room and sleep then I would make sure to get him up and to the bowl.

I'm not sure if I've mentioned it before but petting a cat is thought to release hormones that encourage eating. I think it has something to do with when they are new born kittens and the mom licks them while they are feeding. So I kind of try to stroke 'em like a big tongue would. That seems to work fairly reliably to at least get them started.

She has been grazing ever since her shot tonight. And I am waiting for DH to come home so we can give her the subQfluids. (I'll be damned if I know how that can be done by just one person!---not enough hands!). I usually open a new can or give her FF appetizer treats or something I think she tends to like after SubQ.

That's interesting about petting. There was research I read some months ago about some animals brain development correlating with how often the mother touched them.

You're right it's the +13 that's getting to me. His P seems to kick in every once in a while but never for very long.

I guess I'll go with half. That's what my gut is telling me.

Where do you get a syringe magnifier? I think I have strong reading glasses---the 3.0---and I double them up--a new fashion style, 2 pair of glasses! And even so, I can't differentiate those tiny amounts.

This is a great article by a vet I like that's full of great material:
DIAGNOSTIC AND THERAPEUTIC APPROACH TO THE ANORECTIC CAT
http://www.vin.com/vindbpub/searchpb/pr ... r00168.htm

In cats with cancer, anorexia may result from a decreased sense of taste and smell secondary to chemotherapy, pain, the effect of the tumor on the gastrointestinal tract (e.g., partial intestinal obstruction) or liver (metastases), and possibly the release of an anorectic substance by the tumor (tumor necrosis factor).
Inflammatory, infectious, or neoplastic diseases can cause inappetence, probably due to release of cytokines such as interleukin-1 and tumor necrosis factor.
Medications such as antihypertensives, diuretics, antibiotics, and narcotic analgesics may also cause anorexia.
heating the food to improve its aroma and temperature.
This does not mean heating the food probably above 100F or putting it in the microwave. It's unfortunate he does not make the overheating issue more clear that it can destroy nutrients.
Feeding bowls should be wide and shallow
I fed H on a plate not a bowl - it did make a difference.
Mild stimulation of the cat by petting and stroking its back frequently stimulates eating when a palatable food is present.
Hmm I thought he said it released hormones.. oops. I do think there is a specific name for the petting/eating response.
Although evidence for the efficacy of B vitamins is difficult to find, a deficiency of B vitamins is associated with anorexia.
Also associated with pancreatitis. You might ask your vet about B-12 injections. I by from Costco with Rx and use the insulin syringes to give it SubQ.

Did you ever ask about appetite stimulants? It would be very helpful to be able to give to her especially when she goes into these lesser appetite/BG down situations. I know pilling is an issue. This site has a great graphic and description showing just how far down you have to put the pill:
http://maxshouse.com/Medicating_Your_Cat.htm
1/8th of a mirtazapine is sooooo small [and somewhat difficult to even divide up]. The second you put it in it would practically dissolve. But the key is just getting that pill in far enough down. The goal would be to level out these appetite swings and ensure she does not lose any more weight as it is difficult to near impossible to get it back on once it is gone.

Pepcid would be the other thing I would recommend if you could ever get the pilling thing happening. :YMSIGH:

S, please please please help your mamma pill you.

Wow Gator you are our resident nutritional guru. I can't wait to read the atricle thanks for the info.

Judy, I got the magnifier at the drug store. It's a little clumsy but does work with the glasses. I never thought about two pairs of glasses. ;-) You are a fashionista.

Thanks, Gator. I will buy the magnifier. But I think my learning to pill squamee is a lost cause. Hopefully it will never be absolutely necessary.

Oh yah, the soft kitty song I posted, Penny and Sheldon are neighbors on Big Bang Theory. She's a pretty blond that lives next door to a couple of Asto Physicists.

Robin, Wow! I just looked at your SS and you are doing an awesome job with Harley!! But for tonight, I don't think I've ever seen a cat drop so fast on .25u. Lesson for me that when they are in the mood to drop they will do it at any dose.

I'm hoping Harley is ready to go surfing for a while.  Go Harley Go!!
