Good morning everyone,

Had great hope yesterday the the pm shot would extend healing for another
cycle, but this is not what Small Kitty decided. He was to go back up to
his comfort zone :( At least we had some break for a day :)

Tomorrow will be a big day, A VISIT to the vet. First time since this summer
and with a doctor that know what he's doing in regards of FD (Thanks to scoobidox,
not active anymore). Thing is that I have both Big Brother (how won the battle
on gingivitis with antibiotics) and Small Kitty that have this thing below.

Big Brother at the front, Small Kitty at the back. I spend the day yesterday calling different clinic,
when ask about FD they were heu... not convincing, AND it was all in the 500$.

The clinic where I'll go is cheap but clients had complain about ruff personnel and cleanness
of the waiting room. The receptionist was indeed quite ruff (someone posted ''she must be in
her menopause :)). But this I don't care, price is my limitation.

I did the reading on dental and I'm not sure they do all what's menionned or just
tartar removal but they have lab, scan and can do tooth extraction. I also dont
know what medication they are using for pain, if they plug or just gas, if there
is an assistant...... will be a gamble.

Thing is now that I will need to decide who's going first, Small Kitty or Big Brother.
Carrying both by metro and bus will be hard (plus financial). Dental would be
in 2 weeks (on appointment). Should I use Big Brother has a cobaye because
his health is better, or should I go with Small Kitty had have his number dropped
(at the risk of having Metacam used + no full scale serious medical intervention) ?
*I'll do full scale blood test while there.

What do you think ?

I'm so sorry that everything is going to be so difficult for you both to get your kitties to the vet and the financial. Is there not some way you could get your Dad or a friend with a car to take you down or at the very least pick you up after the dental. It will be very rough on you and your kitty to bring them home on the metro after a dental, plus the weather there I am sure is like it is here..cold and snowy.

As far as who to do first, my thought would be that if BB is eating on his own okay at this point, then the antibiotics are helping for now. With SK having FD I would think he would be the more "needy" kitty to have the dental done. From the picture you posted both kitties are in real need of having the dental done. I would try to go with the better clinic as much as you can afford it and I would request that Metacam NOT be used. They can give buprenorphine for the pain. Maxie had a full dental and 8 extractions and she did well with the buprenorphine. Because of her extensive work I had my vet give me prefilled injectable syringes rather than the oral, but either one will work.

If the dental becomes more involved than just a cleaning, then it will get more expensive.

Maxie's dental...basic cleaning was $270; 8 extractions $360, (costs can vary on what type of tooth is extracted) x-rays (2) $88 and bupe $17. Total with taxes $770. Unfortunately you won't be sure what additional work is needed until they start doing the cleaning and close checking of the teeth. However if you don't have additional needed work done then the problems can get worse and become even more costly. Dentals are a costly procedure no matter where you go. I personally would feel more confident with a vet I trusted even if it cost more. But you have to do what you can and what you can afford. :bighug::bighug:

I agree with Mary Ann. I think you should take BB first. If there is any way you can work it out, I'd try to go to a better vet even if it costs more money.

My thoughts are that as long as BB is eating while covered on the AB, I would get SK done first and then get BB done before those AB are done or his tooth pain will come right back again.

I too hope that you can get a ride there so that it will make the transport so much easier for an all ready stressful situation. Sending lots and lots of hugs to you Sebastien.:bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

PS : Tell the clinic under NO circumstances to give either of your boys metacam! Have them put it on their charts. Whenever I go into the vets with a problem for one of the cats I reiterate it, NO Metacam!

And I second Jayla on seeing if you can get and use the Care Credit. It has saved me too!

I was thinking if BB is eating well on his own, the antibiotics will keep the gingivitis in check for awhile. With both kitties seeming to need dentals as badly as the other, my thought would be to do SK first since he is FD and more of a chance of bigger problems with an FD kitty.

Thanks for the quick reply, the visit is for tomorrow. The visit is for evaluation only,
dental will be done in mid December on appointment. With my father I'm walking on eggs,
he's totally against the project from the beginning. Weather is not that bad here, around
zero degree with no snow. I carry my cats in a sport bags by my side with my hand on their
head and it has worked pretty well so far. Might see with UBert but I'm not sure they
will accept carrying cats. Cab is something like 50$, hubert something like 20.

There is another vet that has observed Small Kitty at 60$ fare and he tartar removal was
250$ and dental for 400$. The other place is less then haft the price.

Hard decision isn't ?

I think I may have read what you wrote wrong. I was thinking do BB first since he will be easier to deal with since he doesn't have FD. That way you can make sure things go well before you do SK.

Is there a better vet by you that takes care credit? it saved us!
I might, I might.. but (still BUT) I don't know the level of FD knowledge this vet has.
He diagnosed DKA but that's about it. When this vet removed tartar there was no
tube or anything. He put a mask for a min then started scraping : 250$. Next stage
was 400$. There was no mention of extraction at this rate. The other place was clear
about that : 155$ tartar with anesthesia, 150 if extraction (molar).
.

I stayed with Maxie through all the pre-dental prep. She was given a sedative shot, then IV line was put in and IV was started, breathing tube was inserted, then IV sedation was given, breathing tube was inserted and vitals were monitored. At this point they were ready to start the dental so I left. The vet called me about 1/2 hour later to tell me the additional work that was required...ie the extractions, which I okayed. They did an x-ray before the extractions and then one afterwards. The pre-molar extractions with 2 roots were $59.50; the pre-molar with 3 roots were $89.50. She actually did several molars at no charge since they came out easily.

ETA This was done in March 2016

First, thanks to all of you for sharing your opinion in regards on who's going to be checked first.
Small Kitty has won the bid, he's the one that has the biggest need of relief. I called 6 different
clinics today, all quoted above 4 of 5 on a web site just for that. It's all basically the same thing,
it starts at 500$ for tartar removal then it's on a per teeth location / time to extract.... With blood
test and so on it was just out of financial range (approx 800$). The clinic that took care of tartar removal for
Small Kitty is not available. So I called back the poor guys clinic and asked for more details.
The receptionist seemed to be nicer, she told me I was in good hands fir Dr. Roch, the FD specialist.
She also said that it's up to the client to decide if he want his pet to be plugged (intravenous fluid)
or just gazed. Small Kitty HAS to hosed in case anything happens.

Thing will now be to study what kind of test we'll need. Full scale blood test will be requested
and NO Metacam (already know the name by earth) for the rest, some more homework ahead.

*Small Kitty must have touched the ground yesterday for rising so high today. Test free
tonight :)

Will post you the plan tomorrow morning, everything should be fine.

Good night my their friends !

Sébastien

Ho, dental is in two weeks, tomorrow is just exam, blood test and recommandation / decision.
Then, in 2 weeks dental will go on. For the ride tomorrow I'll give it a try with Uber, it's
something like 20$. Thing is you need to text the driver and it's up to him to accept or
refuse carrying pets...

When you do have the dental done if you can arrange a ride at least for the way back it will be much easier for you and your kitty. Good luck with the vet visit. :bighug::bighug:

I talked to my father this morning, he will carry me there. With my 2nd job paying double in
winter + the fact I told him there was testimonies of cheap rate at this clinic on the forum (it's the case)
he relaxed.

That is so good to hear!!! It is stressful enough for both the kitty and the bean to do the vet appointments without having to haul a carrier on the metro.

Sending lots of positive energy for the visit today! :bighug: :bighug:
