Poor Bibbles spent the day at the vet, we have been on 1 unit Lantus 2x a day for the past 30 days. Initially he was on 2 units 2x a day for the first month. Gave him the insulin this morning and he was at 52 for the first test and hovered around 100 all day. So we are off the juice for now! I take him back for a quick check in a week. Thanks everyone for the help and hopefully we won't be back soon!

Are you going to go straight off the juice or lower it gradually? Look at Sue's spreadsheet and you'll see how we slowly weaned him off.

I would like to suggest you do some random spotchecks on Bibbles until the next vet visit.
Just to make sure things are working right without insulin.

Good luck to you, hope it works out!

We were down to 1 unit so the vet said just to stop. 1 unit is such a tiny amount, I don't know how I would be able to see half a unit. My gut reaction is that he had a bad reaction to the prednisolone even though it was a low dose. We stopped that and started the insulin in the same week. His numbers dropped from over 500 to 170 in a week.

Glad to hear he is doing well! I personally would be trying a 1/2 unit and seeing where it takes you. Check out some spreadsheets - you'll see plenty of .50 and .25 doses. Could be that Mr. Bibbles is on his way to not needing insulin - but most kitties need a gradual decline in insulin to help out their pancreas as it 'wakes up'. My cat is currently on a 'drop' of insulin.

ETA: They sell syringes with half unit markings. Most of us here use those because it makes getting the smaller doses accurate easier.

hi,
Take it from someone who was away for 2 yrs OTJ....I continued to test Rocket every Sunday and as of this year every last Sunday of the month....with that said...i personally think that you need to be careful and don't always asume that now that Mr Bibbles if off the pred that he is off the hook without insulin...just keep a close eye on him and do test at random times....my $0.02....
If you are curious i'd suggest you take a look at Rocket's old SS...you will see that when he started the glucometer would not even register the #....but i didn't take him off the lantus cold turkey either when he dropped #s...just be cautious as those #s do creep up again in no time....
