Reuben is going to have a feeding tube put in at +12 today and has to be on an empty stomach for the procedure, so I will not shoot this morning. I assume I am doing the right thing?

The results of his blood tests were all good except Albumin which was low (1.6 g/dL) and BUN which was 47 mg/dL. The Urine test will be done today and Ultrasound is Friday. The vet has his Acme Hat on.

He prescribed potassium and vitamin B12 with minerals for starters. Reuben felt better very soon after the first doses, and was actually able to lick the top off of the can of Friskies T&G.

I am pleased with these test results and so is the vet. We will get to the bottom of the situation and he will be fine. Meantime he needs to eat and the feeding tube will relieve the stress on both of us of syringe feeding.

He is lovey and purrey, LB fine, and sends his love and greetings to LL.

Ongoing Medications:
Baytril 17mg once a day last dose on 5th
Ondansetron 5mg BID
Pepcid 2.5mg bid

Labs sound good and sending tons of vines for an easy procedure. A higher BUN is pretty normal for a cat eating a proper high protein diet, so on it's own it isn't a problem.

Paws crossed that you get things figured out soon.

What a change up from your last post. I haven't dealt with feeding tubes so I don't have any input for that.
Paws crossed that this helps Reuben get the right nutrition which will get him on a better path.

Hi guys .. I hope the feeding tube goes in with no problems and that it takes the stress off you guys ... keeping you in my thoughts!

Hi Alexa, Sorry I missed you condo yesterday. I dont have experience with feeding tube, it should help Reuben get the nutrition he needs with less stress on both of you.
Your laugh for today: you said Reuben can lick the top off the Friskies can? Jasper cant even work the pull up tab much less get the top off

thank you everyone ,so much :YMHUG: we just got home,he is groggy and dopey and sweet.

i am quite concerned that the vet did NOT measure potassium and sees no reason to.

he wants me to suspend insulin unless reuben goes over 150.

he is focused intently on the intestine, we will see on friday at the ultrasound.

there were no problems detected in the urine anaylisis.

i wiil bg test now and update .

awww, sweet Reuben! Hope that dopey feeling passes soon. It's the worst watching our sweet kitties running into furniture and trying to jump up on the couch...but miss...worse yet, watching them tumble off the couch once they finally do get up there. Hope all the lab results come back favorable and hope that feeding tube does the job! ((hugs))

Fingers and paws crossed that the feeding tube will work out well and that the vet can get to the bottom of Reuben's problem. Karrie and Maverick knows a lot about feeding tubes and assisted feeding in general. You might want to send her a PM if you have questions or problems. I think I remember reading in one of her posts that Coke should be used to clean out the tube. In any event, Karrie is the person to consult with all feeding issues. She will recommend the Yahoo Assisted Feeding Group.

Good luck,

Ella & Rusty

Thank you for the good wishes Deborah :YMHUG: He`s walking around a little better now, poor thing!

Much appreciated Ella! I will check out Karrie and the Yahoo group  Thank you for your kind thoughts and support.
