Morning Everyone...

Alex just gave me another good scare. I wonder how many lives I have?

I'm really not sure what was wrong with him or if it's completely gone but his numbers had been a bit 'hard to get down' but he seemed to be okay. Then he started to smell a little acetone but his numbers weren't high enough for me to think that there should be a problem. Then on Thursday afternoon, pretty much out of nowhere, he just got real droopy (which I had been on the lookout for), and when I went to take a nap(I had gotten a flu shot and didn't feel so great myself) I heard him cry. He often does for attention so I was going to ignore it but thought better of it and jumped off of the bed and couldn't find him. He was trying to hide in a corner behind the vacuum cleaner because he felt horrible. At first I thought he hurt his leg, or even G*d forbid blew a blood clot from his heart, but his feet were all warm and pink and he didn't growl when I touched his legs or toes. He was so wobbly when he walked away from me that I started thinking ketones again..which were only trace on ketostix-which are new.. I took his temp. and it was 102.6 so I wasn't really worried. I called the vet and he called me back and he said it could be ketones or maybe a blood clot in his brain which I refused to believe. at vet's orders I went out to get 81 mg aspirin which I'm now giving 1/5 of every 3 or 4 days. When I got home I went to pick him up under the chest/ stomach and he cried again. He had a bowel movement when I was gone which was normal but I remembered that I added Slippery Elm to his food that day for the first time??? Jackson was okay and he got it too...so could he be sick from that? I felt his paws and ears again and his paws were sweaty and his ears were burning up and he had 104. I reached the vet who told me to start him on Orbax and if I had already given him fluids (which I had because of acetone smell which was real bad now) I really had to wait. Good thing was that he was still eating (I have no idea why)

He perked in about six hours only to have it happen all over again Friday afternoon.....except for the fever. His temp stayed around 101.8.I raised his insulin, gave fluids and kept giving ab's and today he seems much more like Alex. The acetone is gone and ketones are negative. I hope he keeps getting better. I guess it was just a weird infection that I didn't see the signs of until they affected him(well, actually I did in his numbers)..probably bladder :(

All p's are okay this morning and Alex and Jackson just had a big breffis split in 2 parts and are now napping.

Have a great Caturday everyone!

BTW..I still have low regard for Precision Xtra as a sole indicator of ketones in a CAT. I called Abbott a few weeks ago to let them know that when I use it for my child, the esults of the meter never are in sync with a urine test (ie the blood ketones can read 4.0 which is VERY high, while urine reading is trace and this is not when I first notice the ketones being present so it's not because the blood picks the ketones up first.) They sent me a new meter at no charge and a box of test strips. Same thing happened yesterday. If I hadn't done urine tests, I would have completely panicked if I didn't know so much. With ketones that high, my cat doesn't eat a whole bowl full of food in less than a minute. I'll still continue to use it as a tool to 'detect' the presence' of ketones, but not the degree. :-|

((((((((Caryl)))))) So sorry to hear the Alex was having problems. You are such a good bean, you caught it right away! Any idea what the infection was?

Thanks, Ann! I love that picture of Tess ♥

I really don't know for sure...more than likely his bladder as it's a recurring thing with Alex, but that IS just an idea. Whatever it was, he looked just miserable. Thank goodness he kept his appetite because it made it so much easier for me to work with the insulin. Thank you for asking
