Re: 11/5 larry amps 214

If he isn't interested in food especially first thing in the morning I would be concerned, while mine will sometimes be picky later in the day, mine are always ready to eat me for breakfast. My first concern would be to check for ketones. Especially if they are or have been consistently above renal threshold. Anything above 180 and I start stalking them to the litter box with a ketostix. If that is negative then, I start looking for the reason they aren't eating, I offer a different flavor or see if they will eat their favorite treats, if that is no dice, I check their mouth (that's how I found the tooth with Autumn). If no ketones, no mouth problems and not just unhappy with the menu being served then I start pulling out my bag of tricks. I whip out the 'pixie dust' a.k.a Fortiflora if anything is going to get my bunch eating it's pixie dust. If no pixie dust in the house (which is seldom) we go for tuna juice, warming the food up a little in the microwave or dusting it with catnip or parm cheese. If they still won't eat or only nibble and I'm not sure they will eat later (within about an hour after the shot) I still give insulin I just cut the dose in half. I can always split dose later if they start eating for me but I can't get it back if they completely refuse food and drop like a stone. And then I test like a mad woman, I offer food every hour and I test at the same time. I want to stay on top of the numbers as well as keep trying to get food in to balance the insulin. If nothing is working to get them to eat on their own from the dish, I start by offering food off my fingers, most of the time they will eat if I hand feed, if not and nothing else is working I force feed. And if that doesn't jump start them, we are going to see the vetty bean.

he eats/ate but only a little and he doesnt want the shot so he avoids it as long as possible. it takes us abt 30 tries or more, about 30 mins. to get a blood drop so he gets full on treats frm that.
those r all good ideas thx! i didnt mean not eating at all. this is to avoid shot. too long an hard to explain by typing. oh well. ty mel!

Lantus doesn't have to be given with food like N, you can can test, and either shoot immediately and then feed, or test, feed and then shoot after he is done eating. You just need to make sure he has food in his tummy before his insulin kicks in which is normally around +2-+3 with Lantus.

Playing around with when and how much they eat at any given time through out the cycle is one way to control the curve and keep it as flat as possible. If he's avoiding eating to avoid the shot, then feed him, have a little cuddle time and then shoot. Both food and shot should be something he associates with a pleasurable experience.

Cassanova fought me on shots when I first adopted him, because of being so overdosed before I got him, so he associated them with making him feel crappy. In the beginning especially since he was also not thrilled with the change in the menu, I would test him, feed him, wait until he was done eating then load the syringe, go get him take him the bathroom where we could be alone, cuddle, coo at him, and play with the laser pointer then cuddle some more, and while I was cuddling just slip in the shot. Once he figured out that he wasn't going for another roller coaster ride, and that the shots really did make him feel better, he turned into the 8 second ride, because he is so lovey at test and shot time.

Also watch how many treats you are giving in a sitting. Autumn and Cass only get their treats one in the beginning while I set the kit up, and one once I have the test. And those treats are tiny, not much bigger than my little fingernail. Mere bites. I do, however, leave the container where they can see and smell it so they know more is coming after I have blood.

Re: 11/5 larry amps 214

Last time my GP did a home visit for me I took a little liberty with her and asked her about the slow-down in Saoirse's appetite hiccups. Saoirse was at the top of the euglycaemic range at the time and my GP said that it could be that her system might have been getting used to lower numbers but because they were at the top of the healthy range her appetite may not have been triggering properly because her blood sugar was high enough for her body to function OK.

Sometimes Saoirse won't eat straight away, so I give her a small freeze-dried chicken treat on its own. (She very, very rarely refuses them.) Then I put a second treat on top of her regular food. When she eats that treat, she then gets the taste of the regular food and off she goes. She also likes it when I warm her food up a teensy bit (20% setting on microwave for about 10-20 seconds - or mixing in some warmed water). Maybe you could try something like that, Pam?

hey Pam
i hope you feel better soon. wish you were closer so we could give you a ride. please take care.
hugs

A bad tooth just sucks. I had scarlet fever when I was a very small child and the drugs they gave me, ate all the enamel off my adult teeth so I was always having one chip or get a cavity that they would fill and then the filling would fall out because my teeth were too porous to hold it. I have had some many abscessed teeth over the years I can truly feel for you, not only does it hurt but it makes every part of your body hurt and they sap your energy and strength horribly. Best decision in my life was at 25 I had all my teeth pulled and went over to dentures. Which at that age I was pretty self-conscious of because I felt like I was too young and worried as we do at 25 what the guys would think, but the amount of health I got back was amazing. Now at 52 I could care less..lol Or as Jon and I joke with each other since I'm toothless and he's bald we know we'll still love each other when were old, bald and toothless..lol One thing that does help with tooth pain until you can get to a dentist is clove oil. You can use just a couple drops on the gum line where it hurts and it acts as a numbing agent and tastes way better than the OTC stuff. And is easy to find at most grocery stores

Hope you get to feeling better.

that might hv bn a wise choice for me a few yrs ago but i couldnt imagine NO teeth, an it prob. wd hv cost evn more. mine were ruined for diff. reasons. always lot of probs. but i cd hv bought a mobile home or something for wht they ran me a few yrs ago, and thn i ran out of payment. i was so griefstruck etc. i paid until every penny of savings was gone and all credit cards maxed. now i need MUCH more work. if i pull many more idk how ill eat plus idk how ill afford any of this. its jst 1 more thing. i need a miracle. im trying/praying. doing all i can.
thx mel. i jst live for the animals. i jst try to stay alive to take care of thm.

I went a couple years after having mine all pulled before I got dentures and you do adapt, it is kind of amazing how strong your jaws really are when you need them to be. Just can't bite anything so you have to cut everything into bite size pieces. I had to wait to have mine fitted, because I had also gotten an infection in the bone marrow of my jaw from letting them be bad so long that made my bottom jaw like glass, very fragile.

I was extremely broke at the time and went through 1-800-dentures. It is a program where they base it on your ability to pay, I think if I remember correctly all the extractions and both plates ran me about $500 and they set up a payment plan for me. At some point I would like to have them remade because they are what I paid for them, cheap, they are plastic instead of ceramic, but they work. What I would really like to do when I can afford to is have implants so that I could just brush them like normal teeth but then again I want a winning lottery ticket and a new Harley too...lol

I feel for you, Pam. Wanting to care for Saoirse and Lúnasa was the only thing that kept me going for the last few years.

:YMHUG:

BTW have you any garlic and turmeric at home? Both of them are very good for fighting inflammation.

yea taking turmeric. wanna get some garlic! not sure whn i can go out yet.
so tired i forget what all mel said. oh clove...yes.
my dr. called for me to come back also, so labs showed somthing, hoping they can fix. who knows. i jst need a lot of rest that hasnt come.
how do u say saoirse again??

If you do manage to get out, the garlic capsules are the best for potency. If you could get a mouthwash that contains tea tree oil - and maybe aloe vera as well - that could help, too. Keeping fingers and paws crossed that the doc will be able to help, Pam.

Saoirse is pronounced 'Seer-shuh'.

the caplets? i got those cheap 1s. maybe diff in UK? i have some, but they burn my stomach and make me burp. ack.

That's a pity, Pam. I don't think the UK ones would be any different. I get on fine with garlic, so I'm maybe not a good benchmark.

I'm a lousy one to use as a benchmark too because I can't cook without garlic. DH says I would put garlic on ice cream if I thought I could get away with it..lol

Another herb that is wonderful for infections, especially dental and soft tissue is Echinacea, it basically throws the immune system into hyper drive, but because of that you want to take it with Golden Seal, as Golden Seal works as a flushing agent. So Echinacea amps up the immune system to fight the infection and Golden Seal flushes it out of the body.

Can't tell you how many times my grandmother teaching a few herbal home rememdies has saved my butt when broke and sick. :-D Some have actually worked better than the stuff from the doctor. Like her version of vapor rub, but in that case I think you get well in self defense so she would stop rubbing it on you, it REEKED!

i love fresh garlic on food, and the powder, but the caps dont agree for some reaon, idk. my system is outta whack and pretty delicate. a lot of natural thing i used to tolerate i dnt anymore. hae a candida systemic infection as well as all over me, big white itchy bumps, kinda like ringworm. wntd to take garlic for that too. we shall see next week. gta find a way to doc.

The EU put the kibosh on getting goldenseal over here. As you rightly say, Mel, the synergy betweeen goldenseal and echinacea is very powerful but I didn't know the mechanics of it before. Thanks for the explanation.

Awww I have no problem obtaining either here or should say won't in a couple more seasons. Its planted in the back yard. Along with damiana, colt's foot and St John's Wort. I also want to add feverfew and eyebright. Herbology is my pet project. Lol
