Well... I'm thinking it's time for that reduction (and maybe by saying that "out loud" it'll spur him to get those numbers in check!). Good grief. Of course if I could keep his dumb butt out of the dog food, that'd help. I don't know WHY the dog feels it's necessary to dump her food in her kennel, THEN eat it. But Tink and Tarzan sure appreciate the gesture. I know he got at least one piece last night - then I got a call this morning from DD while on my way to work that he'd gotten into it again. UGH. We even put cardboard around the sides of the kennel so they can't reach their paws in as easily - but that doesn't help if she dumps it and it goes over the rim of the floor tray.

I don't know HOW to fix this. The dog needs to eat. She'll ONLY eat in her kennel. I know I could break her of that with some effort - but there's really no where else I can feed her - especially if she's not gonna eat it right away. Her kennel is the ONLY place in the house that the cats can't get to. I can't lock her in a room by herself because she's still a "pup" and will destroy things. I'm at a loss here. The only think I can think of is trying to find a way to attach the bowl to the floor of the kennel - but I dont know HOW. I have tried mounting it to the side of the kennel, but that just makes the cats have easier access. ohmygod_smile If anyone has any ideas, I'm all ears.

What happened to cats having good instincts??? Doesn't he KNOW that dog kibble makes him feel like crap later?? Plus, like I think Tricia&Cinco said - it's for DOGS! He's a CAT. Why stoop so low?!?!?! Might as well go dumpster diving! Sheesh!

On the bright side, Hoppy ate well last night - but again this morning wouldn't eat canned - so he got kibble, which he ate. Dunno what to do with this guy. I did notice that he was gassy in the litter box. His BMs are fine, but in this particular instance, only one piece (normal looking, but normally he does 3-4 pieces) came out, but there was lots of gas with it. Not sure what that's about.

Re: 11/4 Tink AMPS 345, +2=374 - come DOWN dude!

Well, I picked up a "no tip" bowl at the thrift store - we'll see if that helps at all. It's plastic, so I don't have high hopes... but it does seem pretty reluctant to tip over. Much better than the regular stainless bowl she has now. Wish me luck.

Jen, my Charlie cat loved the dog's kibble. Bud, a big brown pit, gsd, boxer cross was highly aggressive with other dogs, cats that weren't his, and most moving objects! (He loved people and cats that were his! And I loved him to the moon and back). He and Charlie would both munch out of the dog bowl at the same time. Charlie didn't get much but the dog was fine with sharing! Very strange.

How 'bout moving the crate into a room that can be closed off from the cats? Pup would still be in his crate, but not free to perform puppy destruction. Or perhaps, an elevated feeder. Even a short one. The bowl sits off the floor held up by the rim of the elevated feeder. Dog can't (well, shouldn't be able to) tip it over.

Or, maybe give the pup a set time to finish eating. Keep the cats in a closed room during dog feeding time.

Just some thoughts. Gotta keep the Tink from carb raiding! (As much as possible!)

Surprised (pleasantly, for once) by Tink's PMPS. Especially since he got into the kibble this morning. I officially give up on trying to make ANY sense of his BG patterns or trying to figure out what's gonna happen next.

On the dog kibble - I'll try the no-tip bowl first. She's not tipping it in fun, she's tipping it accidentally because for whatever reason, she doesn't want to eat in the morning (probably because she eats at bedtime so isn't hungry yet). I feed at bedtime and at 5am when Tink gets his insulin - in both instances, she goes into her crate anyway. She frequently doesn't eat at 5 and the food is still there when I let her out again at 6 (when I "really" get up). She goes back in the crate for the workday at 7:45 when DD goes to school and usually eats her food sometime after that. I COULD change feeding times, but as much times as she spends in her crate with me working during the day, I hate to make her be in there when I'm home. Anyway... if she doesn't feel like eating, she "buries" her dish in her blankets. Of course later when she wants her food, it's a mess. I'm hoping the no-tip bowl fixes the issue - if not, I'll try something else. I COULD try moving her crate, but it's too big to move back and forth - and I don't want it in a bedroom overnight - which is the only places I can keep the cats out of. But... if the bowl doesn't work we'll have to figure something out.

I hope the no-tip bowl works. What a challenge you have with your carb-fiends!!! Nice PMPS for Tink though....hopefully he'll surf it for you tonight!

the no-tip bowl sounds like a great thing! apparently you're not the only one with a dog that tips her bowl over!

if that doesn't work, this is a goofy idea, but i specialize in goofy ideas  - what about putting her bowl into a small box? so when she tips it over, the kibble is within the box, inside the crate.

another idea is to take a piece of plywood, say 12" square. If it's the kind of dog bowl that i'm thinking - a large plastic that flares out at the base - i think you could drill and put in 3 eyes, then screw 3 hook pieces around the base into the plywood. Put the bowl in place, put the hooks into the eyes, and hopefully she won't be able to tip it over.

To screw into plastic you'd probably need a particular drill bit. I'm thinking of those hook/eye hardware pieces that you find in old bathroom stalls.

I think I like the second idea better. But maybe the no-tip bowl will work - that would be easier.

Yeah, plan B will involve attaching a piece of wood to the bottom of the bowl - though if I go that route I'll use the stainless bowl rather than the plastic. My concern is that the food may be coming out when she takes the blanket out of the bowl - in which case, tipping isn't really the issue. The bowl IS always empty and upright when I get home - but the amount of food I'm seeing, I'm assuming it's tipping. Guess time will tell.

Specialize in crazy ideas... hehehe... sounds like we'd get along great. ;-) My daughter's favorite phrase is "REALLY Mom?" (with full teenage  attached) whenever I show her my latest crazy idea. Tonight, there is a magazine rack (or maybe a firewood rack?) on the kitchen counter. She asked "ummmmm??" and I informed her it was going to become my new hay feeder for the goats. It was $3 at the thrift store. I couldn't help myself!! :-D

my orange kitty, Frodo, somehow manages to get his food all over the outside of his plate every time he eats. I don't know how he does it - McGee and Anya manage to eat the food like normal cats. But Frodo's food goes to every edge of the plate and over it, then he has to lick under the plate and all around it. Takes him forever to eat!

just thinking that maybe the dog pushes it out of the bowl with her nose, too.

You could also try those little raised bowls. Usually people get them for bigger dogs or dogs with physical issues that need to have the bowl raised for easier feeding. It kind of looks like a little plant stand. Hope Tink finds lower floors and flattens out for you soon.
