Recap:
0.1u
AMPS - 103
+1.25 - 40
+1.75 - 46
+2.25 - 62
+3.75 - 63
+9 - 91
PMPS - 108
0.1u
+1 - 124
+2 - 111
+4 - 92
10 - 67
+11 - 51

Good morning LL! First off I would like to thank you for all your help yesterday! I had decided after weighing everything, to go ahead and give Hoot his 0.1 dose lastnight, and he seemed to do fine. It sounds like the more insulin I can safely get in him the better. So this morning he was starting already quite low, PMPS was 57, so I decided to reduce to the "drop" of insulin. He has hit below 50, 4 times since his dose was reduced to 0.1u
10/30 - 39 @ +1am
10/31 - 45 & 46 @ +2am
11/2 - 47 @ +1pm
11/3 - 40 & 46 @+1am
I do feel that after his low AMPS this morning that it is time to take his well earned "Reducie"
So my next question is....since I am going to try the "drop" how long does he stay on that dose. Does he have to hit 40 - 50 range 3 times again until I can completely take him off the insulin?

Re: 11/4 Hoot AMPS 57, +1/43, +1.5/43

My suggestion is to play it by ear. If Hoot is in normal numbers (50 - 120), I think a trial will make sense. Don't overreact if you get one out of range number, though.

Ok, thanks, I will watch him and his #'s will tell me what to do.

Pam:

A few of us have been discussing Hoot. The consensus is that the blues may be bounces. In addition, it's really hard for a cat that's on such a tiny bit of insulin to drop into the 40s. In other words, it's time to leave the Lantus in the refrigerator and start a trial. CONGRATS!!

Here are the instructions:
  • Test at your normal AMPS and PMPS times. Feed multiple small meals throughout the day as much as possible (small meals are less likely to overwhelm a newly functioning pancreas).
  • If your cat is green at your normal test times, no need to test further until the next "PS" time, just feed small meals and go about your day. If he is blue, feed a small meal and test again after about 3 hours. If his number is lower 3-4 hours after a meal, then his pancreas is working!
  • After 2 weeks, if everything is looking good, we have a party!

Sometimes the trial doesn't work the first time and we have to give a little more support in the form of resuming insulin. It's not the end of the world if that happens, we just give him the support he needs. Our goal is a strong remission and it's better to take our time to get that than to rush into remission just to have it fail later on.
