CALI 11/30 AMPS 89
1.5 UNITS LANTUS
Cali proved yet again trips to the VET shoot up to unreliable high even when sedated with gabapentin and acepromazine 11/29 AMPS was 83, PMPS after vet visit rose to 356. The VET was pleased we take diabetes management seriously. Said we were doing everything right and she loves to see caregivers take responsibility for their pet’s care. She said she doesn’t rely on BG# taken at clinic due to its impact of stress on the cat even in the best of circumstances.

Indeed we do! She attendedCali in 2015 way before diabetes. Left VIP for husband’s career with startup prior to COVID. moved around USA and finally back to California. She is phenomenal. I just sent her updated spreadsheet and awaiting lab results for our girl. I look forward to working with her and sharing the feline diabetes groups and process.
Happy holidays to you and Bandit. Speaking of which, how is Miss Bandit doing. I have been away from site for a while so look forward to catching up.
Thank again for your support and encouragement also. It takes worldwide teamwork to conquer this disease.
Fondly, Carla

Bhooma, BTW I just got the other attending VET to approve RX for Meloxicam for Cali’s hip pain [arthritis or injury?]. I believe you were the one who mentioned it in a post some time ago. The inflammation drug approved and typically prescribed for dogs in the USA, although approved and used in EUROPE for cats also. With direction, Vet approved off label use for Cali, at 1/2 the recommended dosage for dogs and suggested alternate days for usage. Also with the understanding that we keep close watch on kidney function and care.
Cali has been treated for diabetes for one year now. She went from 18 pounds pre diagnosis down to 7.4 pounds at diagnosis [delayed due to COVID lockdown and availability of veterinarian]. After converting to low carb Friskees wet canned food, she has steadily gained weight back up to 15 pounds. Praying this Meloxicam will improve her mobility to get her moving again and reduce that weight. This girl is so food driven. She demands and receives 2 cans [11 ounces] per day. Yikes

Meloxicam has a black box warning in the US but is prescribed in Europe and Australia. There is a dog strength meloxicam which is 1.5mg/ml and a cat strength which is 0.5mg/ml. Make sure you get the cat strength. The cat dose is 0.05mg/kg of body weight.

I have had my civvie Budge on meloxicam for a few months now and it has really helped with her arthritis. She has a sensitive tummy and it gives her soft stools so I give her S. Boulardii and that took care of it.
