Hi everyone

Sorry bit late with remi's thread. Remi had a good day yesterday and I decided to hold off on the steroid and give the antibiotic and the accolate another day to kick in.

Emailed the vet this morning and agreed with him to hold off the steroid for now as his chest sounded clear and he just sneezed a couple of times and his nose sounded dry but nothing else. So all was good until PM +1.5 when he got off my lap and just threw up twice and now sounds really chesty again  .

I have two questions- the threw up 2 hours after his antibiotic- would that have given it enough time to get into his system? Does anyone know if Ronaxan 20mg can upset a cats tummy. I am currently giving it to him on an empty tummy half an hour before his food. Should I switch to giving it after he has eaten. He gets it in a gel cap along with 5 ml of water. He has had bad smelling farts today! Either that of my partner is lying to me and it was him all along :-D .

I am a little worried about feeding him later on and also because he is chesty again his asthma later tonight .

Any help gratefully received.

Hi Sarah:

I did some reading on Ronaxan - it's not available in the US, so I was not familiar with it. Everything I read said to give it with food, so that may be the problem. I don't know whether any would have gotten into his system before he threw up, but there is a good chance it would have. Most meds I know of take 1-2 hours to have an effect. I would give him his next dose at the scheduled time, but WITH food.

I hope his asthma calms down. Sending healing vines!

Okay I looked it up and think I should be giving the dose at the same time as food not half an hour before. So maybe this upset his tummy? I have also been putting it the same gel capsule as his Zantac but just realised that it said not to be given with antacids.

So how does this sound?

Antacids and ondansteron and accolate at pre shot time and then the antibiotic at +1 with some more food. I wonder if that is far enough apart?

Hi Tricia

Many thanks for your reply. His asthma has calmed down again now and hope that he doesn't throw up again. Many thanks for the advice. In effect I was giving it on an empty tummy so I think I will give it at +1 when he has his second meal. That way he already has some food in his tummy and will get some more.

What do you think about the antacid? I give that just before the insulin dose so that will be about an hour apart from the antibiotic. I wonder if that is long enough?

I think it's smart to separate antacids from meds. They should be given at least 30 mins before a meal. If you feed him mini meals, you could give the a/b with a subsequent minimeal a couple hours later.

Sending him healing vines!

Thanks Marje

I agree best to separate and so my plan is going to be

Before the AMPS &PMPS I will give 1 gel capsule with accolate (apparently best on an empty tummy), ondansetron and Zantac. Then at +2 give the antibiotic and feed and then at +4 give the kaminox with food. I hope this will separate things enough.

Cheers everyone. Remi's breath has settled a little. The bit where he swallows is still irritated from where he threw up but not as bad as before.

Remi sure is consistent with his numbers throughout the cycle. Love the flatness.  Great news that he's improving a bit today. :-D

Thanks Wendy. I know sometimes I have to double check my figures they are so similar I often think I just looked at the last reading on the meter. :-D

The generic for Ronaxan is doxycycline. The more common of the side effects are nausea and vomiting. While the recommendation is to give the med on a full stomach or with food, I would encourage you to double check this with your vet. Alternatively, since doxycycline is a human antibiotic and ondansatron is also a drug used in humans, a pharmacist may be able to tell you if there is any problems with giving any of these meds together, with an antacid, or how far apart they need to be timed.
