Yesterday's Very Yellow Condo

Happy Thanksgiving to all my dear LL Family! I am so thankful for this place and the wonderful people that are here. You are all one of my greatest blessings.

Cinco is showing a little improvement after his dosecrease yesterday - that +4 drop concerned me about what was to come, but he's leveled off so I don't think I need to worry about leaving him this afternoon. We will most like go with an 18 hour schedule, although a late shot has not been ruled out. We'll just have to see when we get home tonight. I really hate to mess with things if he's finally getting back on track, but it is what it is.

The other three kitties all ate portions of their breakfast - no CPC but no complete refusal, either. At this stage, I'll take that. I gave Harvey a half a Zyrtec and his sneezing has calmed down for now. I guess I'll keep him on that for a while and see how it goes. He has had some major sneezing fits in the past 48 hours. I don't know if it's the Metro or something else, but it is new, so I can't help but wonder. He's sleeping peacefully behind me in my desk chair - so I'm perched on the edge! This is a normal thing for us, that had been absent since he got sick, so I'm happy to see it, however uncomfortable I may be!

I gave both Minka and Harvey their fluids yesterday afternoon in more relaxed situations. They were both uncomfortable in the downstairs bathroom, which is our normal site for medical treatments (insulin injections, fluids, etc.). So I went out and spent $30 on a used IV pole and gave Harvey his fluids while he was on my desk chair (although I did have to put him in the cat sack) and Minka got hers while she snuggled in the afghan on the living room sofa. Much better experience for all concerned. If we have to continue to do this on a daily basis, I'm gonna need more fluids. I looked online and everyone seems to be out of Ringers. Is the vet the only source for this now? I recall Marje used to get hers at Thriving Pets, but they only have the bags containing DEHP, which she said to avoid. Any pointers would be appreciated.

I have to go get cleaned up now. We leave for Sac in an hour. I hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving and all your kitties give you numbers to be thankful for.

Sending healing vines to all in need and hugs to all their beans. :YMHUG: Praying extra hard for Amy's DF, Lyresa's DF, Lisa's DF and Elise's DM. Extra vines to Rhiannon and Shadow.

Re: 11/27 Cinco AMPS 257 +4 161 +6 152 Ringers Shortage?

Keep working that dosecrease, Cinco!!

The fluids shortage is one of my biggest stressors. It's been going on for over a year now, and at this point it's worse than it was earlier this year. It's ridiculous that such a basic medical supply (for both humans and animals) is so hard to find. Dyana recently managed to get them through her local Walmart, so you can give that a try. Unfortunately, it is very hit or miss.

I pulled this from Tanya's CKD site about DEHP. We've never been able to get DEHP-free bags for Trix...they just don't seem to exist right now.
DEHP-Free Bags
The plastic of some fluid bags contain a chemical called DEHP, which softens the bags. Some people prefer not to use bags containing DEHP because they are concerned that some of the DEHP may leach into the fluids themselves, especially if the bag is warmed before use.

Health Canada mentions that studies into the effect of DEHP on mice and rats found that they developed liver tumours, but this was after they were fed DEHP in high doses. I am not aware of any studies into the effect of DEHP on cats. The US Food & Drug Administration has concluded that "there is little or no risk posed by patient exposure to the amount of DEHP released from PVC IV bags during the infusion of crystalloid fluids (e.g., normal saline, D5W, Ringer's Lactate)".

I would probably avoid DEHP bags myself if I could find an alternative. I understand that the B Braun, Baxter and Hospira brands in the USA offer DEHP-free bags which cost around $0.50 a bag more. As at June 2014 it was virtually impossible to obtain DEHP-free fluids in the USA because of supply problems, and I know some people are very concerned about this. Personally, if I couldn't find or afford DEHP-free bags, it is not something I would lose sleep over - in my opinion, it is more important that a cat who needs fluids receives them.

I don't know if the sneezing is a metro side-effect....could Harvey have picked up a bug while at the vetty? We've had that happen more than once here...kitties start sneezing a few days after a visit. I'm glad you're getting some eating and no flat-out refusal...keep eating, kitties!!

Have a great Thanksgiving, Tricia...many hugs and prayers!!

Re: 11/27 Cinco AMPS 257 +4 161 +6 152 Ringers Shortage?

You might check with Dyana to see if she has any unopened Ringers. This shortage has gone on for quite some time. If there's a vet school anywhere nearby, you might call to ask the veterinary pharmacist what the alternatives are or if you can buy some there.

I hope Cinco surfs safely while you're out. That's good all the kitties ate something. I hope you can find some fluids.

Have a great Thanksgiving.

Can a compounding pharmacist make some?

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!

Senidng many healing vines to your whole crew, Tricia. I'm glad they ate some today.

I got my fluids at Walgreens. I put the thrivingpets info on the video as alternatives.

The last couple of months Gussie was alive, I had to use DEHP bags. Good luck...I hope you find some.

Re: 11/27 Cinco AMPS 257 +4 161 +6 152 +14.5 335

Thanks for visiting us today, Amy, Sienne, BJ, Carla and Marje.

We got home from dinner too late to do tonight's shot, so 18 hours it is. I HATE the number I got when I checked Cinco, and I'm dreading his PMPS - please don't let it be much higher. He doesn't know the difference and was very anxious for some food when we got back. Dinner was more than 2 hours late, after all! And on Thanksgiving, too!

Harvey ate a little more than half his dinner. He's still sneezing so he got more Zyrtec. Minka didn't want more than a bite or two, but with persistence I got about half into her. She also drank some chicken broth. Then I did her fluids and she ate another 1/4 of it. I'll keep trying to get the rest into her. Sasha, with help from some kitty crack, ate about 90% of her dinne. Then she ate quite a bit of boiled chicken. I was very pleased with her! :-D

I guess I will ask at UCD on Monday about the Ringers. I'm sure they have it there, and will sell me some if they feel Minka needs it (which I'm sure she does). I was hoping to find a good deal on it somewhere, but I guess beggars can't be choosers.

We had a good time at dinner tonight with the family of Mark's best friend (his dad and siblings). It was good to get away and not think about all the issues here at home (well, most of the time). I hope everyone else has had a wonderful Thanksgiving. If you're shopping tomorrow (or even tonight), happy bargain hunting and be careful! I'm not going anywhere near a store other than the grocery for the next few days!

So maybe I should have double checked that +14.5. I like the PMPS much better. Interestingly, it's right in line with his usual PMPS. Now to see what he does from here....

Re: 11/27 Cinco AMPS 257 +4 161 +6 152 +14.5 335

No higher Cinco! Neko went up to that floor today and she told me there wasn't anything worth visiting.

I'm glad you had a good dinner out and were able to relax a bit from the stresses of home. I wonder if they would like cooked turkey - it's always a hit here.

Good luck getting the LRS, for some reason it's a US only issue. Bit heavy to ship from Canada though. Healing and appy vines going out your crew that need it.

Unfortunately Black Fridays have migrated north of the border. Some even had a Red Thursday today. Unfortunately I'll have to hit the grocery store cause of the forecast snow. Ugh! Good plan to stay away from stores tomorrow.

I don't know anyone who has been able to get the DEHP free fluids any more. I've read the shortage will continue until 6/15 and will continue to get worse. A friend was going to send me hers that she no longer needed but now is giving them to a friend near her in New York. I hope you can find them locally. It's just not fair that basic medical supplies are becoming hard to get. With the fluids it is the manufacturers having issues at the plants where they are produced.
