11/27/2019 Blackie +8 20

Better...I would give him some more karo...get him into the 40's. We need to get smthg in him that going to bring him up and keep him there. HC food with a mix of LC. Key is not to fill him up and keep him eating
Just gave more karo. Will test again in a few. Wonder if he's been going low like this before. I'm usually at work and don't test at this time.

Do you have plenty of strips? HC food? How far away is the nearest vet?
How much karo have you given? (roughly)

Test 15-20 minutes after your last test.

I'm wondering if the neighbour gave too much insulin. Can you check with them? Do not leave the house but call and ask.

I can stay with you for the next 40 minutes but not after that.

How is he acting? Is he behaving normally? Do you have an ER close by? If his numbers don't start coming up significantly and quickly, you should consider taking him in and getting him on a glucose drip. 20s are nothing to mess around with at all.

You will need to be vigilant with testing ALL evening and possibly into the wee hours of the morning. Karo and high carb foods wear off and numbers can start to drop again. Events like these can sometimes take as long as 16 or so hours to clear.

You don't want to overfeed him at this point. You do need to get those numbers up, but you need him to remain a little hungry, in case his numbers start dropping and you need him to eat more, plus you don't want to overdo it and end up with a scarf and barf situation.

Once this is all said and done, Blackie has earned a .25U reduction. I was wondering the same thing @Red & Rover (GA) said....did the neighbor give too much insulin?

I'm in the middle of baking Thanksgiving pies, but will try to check back in periodically.

Hi plenty of strips. 2 x karo on gums. The emergency vet is 30 minutes away. I'm testing now . Neighbors EMS and has helped before but will check that too. Ty

Also, as you can, please keep your SS updated through the evening...that will make it quick and easy for everyone to see where his numbers are.

I sent messages out to a few other experienced folks...I know a lot are busy with Thanksgiving, but hopefully more will check in.

He's at 36. So keep testing or feeding or both ?
36 is still too low - you want those numbers up over 50. Feed a small bit more, and if he'll go for it, add a few drops of Karo in there.

You won't be able to back off testing for a while. I would say once he's over 50, you can probably back off to once an hour, and play it by ear from there. Ultimately, you can back off once yet get two tests in a row over 50 that are NOT food influenced. Food can influence the numbers for about 2 hours.

I'm in Canada and Turkey Day has long since past but have to leave in 40 minutes to pick someone up.

If you do decide to go to emergency take karo, meter and strips with you. 30 minutes behind the wheel won't give you much of a chance to keep your eye on him, pull over and do a quick check if you have to. Is he walking or wanting to get up? Do not let him fall into a deep sleep.
He's sitting by water bowl. But not sleeping. Ty

How much karo/honey has he had?

I'm pretty concerned about the possibility of an accidental overdose by the neighbor, given the difficulty getting Blackie to come up, and the lateness in the cycle for these problems.

Is there anyone who could drive you to the vet while you keep an eye on Blackie/administer honey/karo when necessary? I'm thinking a trip to the vet may be necessary here, just for safety's sake.

Hi. Neighbor confirmed only 3 units. He's had karo 3x .

I'm concerned that the cat is not moving. There is something that sometimes happens during a low event. It is called brain blindness and is temporary. To test, stand behind the cat and drop a cotton ball about a foot in front of him. He should notice it. The cotton ball is light enough that no other senses come into play.
If you do not have a cotton ball, pick the cat up and put it somewhere on the floor that it will likely move from. Watch closely.

I agree with Amy and Nan about the emergency vet. I also agree with Dickson (Noah) in that someone would need to be with you or you would need to pull over at least once on the trip. Is there a vet that is open closer?
