NOTE: Pumbaa's SS is in reverse order with the most recent data at the top.

Pumbaa is now on his 4th cycle at 2.50U, which was an increase. I am very, very, very pleased with his reaction so far!

Since I raised him to 2.25U on 11/20, he has been much more even in his numbers, and hasn't gone back to the major swings that he used to exhibit on Lantus, and had even exhibited on the Levemir. That is a huge blessing to me, and I'm sure that Pumbaa feels much better with more even numbers than those huge bounces and dives!

Someone barfed tonight, maybe about 1/2 hour after feeding time. From where the barf was located, I'm pretty sure it was Pumbaa. :( That is very unusual as my cats have pretty much stopped regular barfing since I took away their kibble back in April. This now concerns me because, A) this is the second time this week someone barfed, and B) barfing this soon tonight after getting the insulin means that the insulin has less food to work on, and could cause lower numbers. I did test Pumbaa at PM +2, and he had gone up slightly, and he did eat as soon as I finished testing him, so maybe this won't be a problem. He's held down that food for an hour now, so maybe we're okay?

Other than finding barf twice this week, Pumbaa is doing just great with the 5 P's (or whatever they are called). He's active and loving and sleepy and all of the things that normal cats do, normally. :) Seriously, no one could look at him and think he was diabetic.

Another long day today with work and etc. One of my mom's cats (the one I have such a hard time pilling) is a skinny little guy, and he's been getting Cerenia due to barfing problems (his blood test results all came back normal). He can't afford to lose any more weight, yet he didn't eat all day today. (Go figure, as the vet prescribed low residue prescription food that must taste like crap!). I was successful giving Freydo his pill tonight, and after I finished my chores there, I ran to the grocery store and bought baby food to entice him to eat. Freydo was hiding under my mom's bed, but I got him to eat beef baby food off of my finger. That enticed his appetite enough so that he came out later looking for more food, and my mom gave him more of the beef baby food. I've never known a cat who was sick and not eating normal cat food to turn down beef baby food. :) When I checked in with my mom just now, Freydo was no longer hiding under her bed and was on her lap demanding attention. He just needed food, and not that crappy prescription diet stuff that mom's vet got her to purchase.

Just dealing with life, one day at a time! :)

Baby food can work wonders - and you are right about stimulating their appetite so they eat again. Glad he is eating. I think Wellness canned would be better than Rx food. Why is he on a low residue diet? (Wellness does have "residue" in it). Don't get Blue Buffalo. I think that was why I had to strain Jeddie's bottle food. The nipple kept getting clogged.

Hope Pumbaa doesn't up-chuck again. Wonder what the deal is there? With my guys it's usually hair balls.

Sheila, for some reason, my mom's two cats have been the barfing kings, for a very long time now. This isn't recent. I have been scrubbing barf out of white carpeting for 8+ years now. :( But both of my mom's boys have lost weight, and continue to barf. I finally got my mom to switch them over to all canned food, yet she wouldn't make sure that they knew that they always had food available, and I think that perpetuated the barfing due to snarfing and barfing.

Freydo was put on a nasty prescription-food low residue diet because the vet could find no reason for his barfing and weight loss. I tried to inform my mom how nasty those vet-prescribed foods are, but she never listens to me. To me, low-residue = high protein, and you are correct, there are many better choices out there than prescription foods the vets advocate, and that people like my mom are suckered into purchasing. :(

I wish all vets were like Dr. Lisa!

As for Pumbaa barfing, it could be hairball-related since he hates getting brushed, and the barf a few mornings ago did contain hair. And, even though I give both of the boys EVOO with every am/pm feeding, it might not be enough. I tried giving Pumbaa vaseline a few weeks ago, and he wasn't a fan.

How old are your mom's cats? Many older cats loose weight for various reasons from hyperT, to FD, to pancreatic (enzyme) insufficiency. My aunt's cats at 15+ and have been getting thinner and thinner. Her male cat is very thin and, I think, either has severe IBD or a lymphoma. Beau lost a lot of weight right after I got Jeddie. He was 11 at the time and we ran all kinds of tests, but could not find any reason. He has hyperT, but it wasn't that. I began putting plant enzymes in their food about a year ago and had slowly upped it to the "per cat" daily dose. It is helping Beau with diarrhea and I think he has started to gain a little weight, but it could be that he just feels heavier compared to Cami, who is light as a feather.

Anyway, the enzymes seem to be helping and Wellness is better that the rx food - and they like it better. I mix it 1:1 with PetSmart Great Choice because I can't afford to feed it 100%.

I use Animal Essentials Plant Enzymes & Probiotics, from Amazon (don't forget to use the DCIN/Amazon button here so they get a comission: http://fdmb-cin.blogspot.com/ (upper, right corner).

I think my mom's cats are somewhere around 13-15. Theo, was a rescue and they have no clue how old he is.

Theo was always a BIG boy, and at one point weighed around 25 lbs. He's also the longest cat I've ever seen...he can actually stand on his hind legs with his front paws on the dining room table and put his head up there to check up there for food. *LOL* He started losing weight about a year and a half ago, and again, the vet ran all sorts of blood tests and could find nothing wrong. Theo eats everything in sight, and his appetite has never been a problem.

Freydo (the one I'm having problems giving Cerenia to) was always a skinny little guy. Very sleek, and fine-boned. He's more of a picky eater, and a nibbler at that. The problem is that, if mom leaves food out for Freydo to free-feed, Theo snarfs it down.

Maybe a year or two ago, I had my mom giving her boys Nzymes Bac-Pak Plus, which are "direct fed microbials & digestive enzymes" recommended by the health food pet store we go to sometimes. But she just won't add it to their food regularly enough for it to make a difference. I forgot about this, and need to convince mom to start adding it to their food again. Thank you for the reminder!

Pumbaa hasn't barfed again, thankfully. And he's been very active, last night and this morning.

I have the same problem with my aunt - won't add the enzymes all the time, won't keep him off a particular food for two weeks to see if his diarrhea clears up (I suspect a food sensitivity to either beef or egg product, or corn). Sigh. She would rather take him to the vet every three weeks for a steroid shot. I just don't get that mentality. And she keeps buying crap dry food for them! I had a huge problem with her buying Science Diet dry several years ago because the cat sitter she used, who was "well recommended" spoke as an authority on all things cat and said it was the best food for them. We butted heads over that and some other things and she stopped "being available" when my aunt needed a cat sitter. Grrrrr! My aunt does feed canned food throughout the day, but still leaves dry down for them. Luckily, neither of them eat much of it, but even a Tb of dry with an ingredient he has trouble with will perpetuate the problems. She is the same way about her own health though. Can't keep herself from easting foods that give her digestive upset. I don't get it.

Glad Pumbaa has kept his food down!

Sheila, I shouldn't laugh, but I feel for you dealing with the irrational stubbornness. *LOL*

This morning, when I talked to my mom and brought up her using the digestive enzymes for her cats again, she said, "I don't want to introduce anything else that may upset their stomachs." Uh, didn't I just explain that that is the reason you give them this stuff? *LMAO*

Excuse me while I go bang my head against a brick wall. :)

Yeah, that's like: "I don't what to take pepto bismol because my stomach is upset...."

Tell her that many older cats cannot make enough digestive enzymes on there own and the food is so processed that there aren't any in it, so they NEED the exogenous enzymes. Tell her it is like a lactose intolerant person taking Lactaid so they can digest dairy products.
