Ketone Neg 11/17

Well, a little disappointed to see 135 this morning. He hasn't been over 105 in nearly a week. We did pickup some chicken to cook and give him as a zero carb treat/snack. He had some at AMBG +10, not sure if Ava gave him any before coming to bed but that shouldn't have caused his BG to rise anyways, right? He did have mostly Mixed Grill yesterday which is 11% carbs, but that shouldn't make him jump much either. Hopefully he brings himself down at +3.

Have a great day, LL!

Re: 11/25 JuJu OTJ Trial Day 12 AMBG 135

11% is enough to impact BGs in most cats. For low carb, most people feed 4-6%ish, depending on the cat. I always gave punkin boiled chicken and it didn't affect his BGs, but I've heard some people say it did. I have wondered if some chicken has stuff injected/added to it that might be a factor.

Congrats on Day 12!! So exciting to have the countdown almost over!

Thanks, Julie.

JuJu has been eating variety cans of Friskies Pate. Most are in the 8% range. He seems to do well on them. I'll just be sure to give the Mixed grill to KiKi.

We decided to skip his chicken snack tonight. Seems odd that it would make him jump but I guess it could have additives.

I just picked up a 24 pack of the Pate, so I'd like to use it up. I will consider going to a lower carb afterwards. What would you suggest?

There isn't a perfect answer to that - it's a trial and error thing. I'm just thinking that I believe that under 10% is considered low carb, and i'd probably stick to the 5%ish range. But you'll want to just try things and see what works.

Almost there JuJu! Way to go. Some chicken suppliers will brine the chicken before hand, which means soaking it in a salt/sugar/water mixture. That's something to be wary of around Thanksgiving too. Butterball turkeys are injected with sugar water. At least JuJu brought it back to normal again. Happy Day 12.

Julie, I was asking about suggestions for a certain brand/type of food that falls into the 5% range.

Wendy, thanks for the info and the dancing kitties.

Amy, thanks for checking in.

Thanks, Elise.

ah, i fed punkin fancy feast classic pates except for the salmon feast, which were in the 5%ish range. For some reason the salmon says it's 1% but it always increased his BGs - others reported that at the time too.

When he developed the beginnings of kidney disease, I switched to Friskies Special Diet (not senior diet) Turkey & Giblets because it is both low phosphorus (easy on the kidneys) and low carb 5%, i believe. Ingredients change, though, and punkin passed away a year and a half ago, so what he ate might not be current now.

The list i used was here. It was updated in 2012. Just scan down the carb column and see what's in the range you want.
