Good morning, and Happy post-Thanksgiving to all the still-digesting Americans! Did you guys know that the turkey dinner you had yesterday was the turning point in treating FD? Years ago, an FDMB sugarmom had no Rx FD cat food left the day after a big turkey day feast, so her sugarcat got lovely turkey meat instead. And lo and behold! His BGs went waaaay down! The whole thought process of what to feed a sugarcat was changed...

Grace's AM BG was the highest this morning that it has been in a while. I suspect that this is partly due to the fact that her mom was overly cautious yesterday and gave her just 0.1u instead of her 0.25u ... She got the full 0.25u today.

But also, Grace is not feeling well. She walked away from her night time snack last night, did not want her treats, and only nibbled breakfast today. This is a cat with a more-than-healthy appetite, and not eating whatever is offered and begging for more never happens.

Blood ketones negative.

She has been digging at her ears - a sure sign that her allergies are in full swing. But this has never prevented her from eating before. The only two times she had DKA were both following periods of inappetannce, so you know her mom is hyperventilating in pure panic. At least she can test blood ketones!

Will keep you updated.

That was very interesting about the turkey! I hope Grace will be feeling better soon....could it be a hairball brewing? I hate it when they don't eat so well....sending feel better vines to her today!

I'm sorry Grace is not feeling well. Hope she bounces back quick. Interesting about the Turkey but my kitties are not fond of Turkey. The only one that likes it is the IBD kitty and it upsets his tummy.

Do you know how to assist feed her to get her through periods of inappetance? I can help you with this. We syringe fed Maverick during his transition to wet food. I am a member on a group that helps cat owners with assist feeding. It is an invaluable tool. Maverick recovered from feline hepatic lipidosis in 2008 and we never want to deal with a recurrance.

please do keep us updated. As the mom of a DKA kitty myself, I understand the panic when they don't want to eat. It has been 3 years since Lucy was sick, but I still have to stare at her until she eats.

Thanks, everyone.

Oh yes, her mom finger fed and syringe fed her through both bouts of DKA, but thanks so much for the offer of help.

103 @ +7

The good news : Grace's BG is 103 at +7, blood ketones 0.2

The bad news is that she obviously feels terrible. Hollis found that she had actually vomited up her breakfast, so the very little food we thought she had in her system didn't stay in. Not good.

She won't eat anything. I had Hollis give her some Laxatone earlier in case this is a hairball, but I don't think so now. I suggested a 1/4 tab Pepcid AC.

I am wondering if she has mild pancreatitis. Would explain the sudden rise in BGs, vomiting, lethargy, inappetance ... We can't withhold food because of the FD and the ketones, so I suggested some finger feeding of tuna - it's low fat, at least.

And I have suggested that she needs to take the 3-hr trip over the snowy mountains tomorrow morning to come to the vet. :-(

Wish us luck!

if CP is suspected, see if she can get a stash of pain meds for this time and future episodes. buprenex or tramadol if vettybean has them.

does anyone at the monastery know acupuncture by any chance?

and ohmygod_smile ohmygod_smile ohmygod_smile why didn't i think of this, can you send Grace reiki? ohmygod_smile ohmygod_smile ohmygod_smile

PM PS 85

Everything she has eaten/been fed comes back up. PM PS was 85, gave skinny 0.25u

PM PS 85 (sk 0.25u)/ ketones 0.2
+4 43 -finger fed/ vomited
+5 41 0.0 ketones

She is feeling pretty miserable. All she wants to do is drink from the tap. Fingers crossed that the vet can figure out what's wrong with Miss Grace tomorrow.

oh no. i'm sorry to hear this.
i haven't tried that "shake" for inappetent kitties anne & ff posted in the health links forum. you might want to jot down the ingredients and have hollis ask the vet about it.
fingers crossed and wishing her safe travels tomorrow...

Good idea, Jill! Thanks.

She is not truly inappetent since she has tried to eat, but just vomits, so am thinking it's more nausea. I keep coming back to pancreatitis... altho' I hope not because they are so sick with that.

I'll update you tomorrow when I get updated.

if it is pancreatitis, here's jojo's list of stuff she should probably stock up on:

~SQ fluids
~ pain meds
~ anti-nausea meds (hey look pepcid falls in this category)
~appitite stimulant (new med called mirtazapine (remeron) works well for cats)
~ antioxidants (vitamin E ~water-dispersible form preferred and vitamin C ~non-acidic Ester-C form preferred)
~ liver support (milk thistle, denosyl, or marin)
~ vit b-12 injections(especially if bowel involved)
~ +/- pancreatic digestive enzymes (to 'predigest' food, however some controversy in vet med on whether or not to use these)
~ +/- antibiotics if indicated
~ +/- steroids if needed
