My sweet Noodle was released from the hospital this afternoon and is home again. I'm so happy! He has improved greatly and all his labs are in the normal range except for a very slight elevation in his ALT, but so minor that the vet assured me it wasn't significant. I will continue to give him sub-Q fluids for a few days just to make sure the electrolytes don't get out of sync. He ate nearly a whole can of food when he got home so his appetite is back, thank goodness. We are in the midst of a snowstorm and what should have been a 45-minute trip to get him turned out to take 2 1/2 hours. But I would have gone by sled-dog if necessary, I'm so happy to have him. Many, many thanks to everyone who offered support, prayers and encouragement during these nail-biting days. I learned a lot more about DKA than I ever wished to know but thanks to forum members' input, I feel I am better prepared to maybe avert a crisis in the future. Having Noodle back gives me a huge thing to be extra-thankful for this Thanksgiving. Thank you, my friends and Happy Thanksgiving to you all! I wish health and happiness for you and your kitties.

Thanks so much, April! It's so nice of you to share in the good news about Noodle and to offer support when I was so bummed out a few days ago. I appreciate your thoughtfulness!

http://m.prevention.com/health/diabetes ... re-ketones

this article is for people but to answer your question ketones first show up in blood so if you use the meter (like nova max plus) you can catch the ketones right away before they start spilling into the urine. for ketone prone kitties like Noodle & Tibbs it's really essential. let me know if u need any other info on the ketone blood meter. i use it a few times a week to test Tibbs.

Hi Nadine,
Thanks for the cheers! It is the best Thanksgiving present ever. My birthday (ouch) is Wed. and I told my DH I wouldn't need a single present if Noodle could just be ok and come home.
Thanks for the link and info on blood ketones, the meter etc. Sounds like you know a lot about this. What I don't understand is that two, not one but TWO previous vets blew me off when once before Noodle developed moderate ketones. They said as long as he was eating and drinking not to worry about it but clearly there is FAR more to it than that! S-h-e-e-e-s-h!!! This is really a scary thing and can spiral out of control so fast.
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving and thanks so much for all your help and encouragement for Noodle. How is sweet Tibbsy? Off his trampoline yet--sure hope so !

Nadine,
That was a really excellent article on ketones--the clearest explanation I've read yet. Thanks--you really DO know your stuff! ;-)
