I reduced Max’s dose a little for Thanksgiving, but today he dropped to 33. We are on cycle 3 of 6 units and it could be the old depot still working maybe. His appetite is not as big, but he still eats some of his food. He has been eating the renal diet, but with these low numbers I’ve added Weruva HC food and honey as well. It’s kind of odd, the renal diet is higher carb also. He also had an upset tummy last night, but today I haven’t seen any of that. He had some vomiting the other day also. He only did it once though. I’ve been giving him Zofran now twice a day and cerenia once a day. I don’t know what is going on with Max. I hope it doesn’t mean anything bad, but it’s worrisome because of all that’s happened lately. He’s had good days and bad. Some days he will play and others, he will barely move. Respirations are still around 22. I think I will reduce his dose to 5.5 tonight. Do we think that’s appropriate for Max?
 
Ondansetron doesn't last long in cats, you can give it up to 4 times a day. I would increase the dosing, you want to get ahead of nausea.

I agree on reducing the insulin dose to 5.5 units. At Max's size of dose, especially in the 30's, a full 0.5 unit reduction is recommended.

Do you know what foods don't work for Max's IBD? There are renal diets with different proteins is the one he's getting isn't agreeing with him. I just took a look at the ingredients - ugh! Neko was allergic to wheat flour and it's fairly high up there on the list of ingredients.

Remind me, is Max on any long term pain management meds? Most acros end up on one. Neko's bupe made a big difference to her QOL.

I hope Max begins to feel better very soon. Poor baby. Glad no vomiting today.

Okay, I was only giving Ondansetron twice daily, I will increase that.
Wheat is something that bothers Max’s tummy, and chicken in large amounts bothers him. Fish is the worst as far as upset tummy. I was hoping he would do okay on this renal diet. I’d tried the Purina renal before and he wouldn’t eat it. He eats the Royal Canin now and has liked it okay. It didn’t seem to bother him at first. He started eating that over a week ago, but now the tummy issues are back. He was on the homemade with EZ complete (rabbit, pork, turkey) before until diagnosed with stage 3 kidney disease. I’m not sure if it’s the renal diet causing the problem, but maybe that’s it.

His vet gives me Bupe for “pancreatitis” as it says on the bottle. I give it to him most days. He sleeps a lot when he takes that also, but it does help him.

I just looked at the ingredients of the Royal Canin. It has wheat and chicken by-products. What is he going to eat?

Did you ever contact the nutritionist I sent you? Not sure if you want to go down that road of making your own food? They also review the entire medical history before creating a recipe. (Just a thought).

Hi Staci. I’m still considering the nutritionist. I did end up making my own food and he was doing well on it until the kidneys got so much worse, I decided to go with the vet’s recommendations on trying the renal diet to lower his protein. He’s at stage 3 and all that I’ve read recommends it at that time, but I know it’s better to eat what he can tolerate so now I’m back at square one. I guess the nutritionist would be a big help, so I will look into that. Thank you for that information again.
 
Seems like all cat food has chicken or fish in it, that’s what led me to making my own. I will look at these and see if I can find anything. Thanks.

I understand. Just have to get them to eat what they can tolerate. I didn’t want to make you feel pressured or anything. I just recalled we had talked about it before.
