Jude is still having problems with inappetence, despite being off the antibiotic for over 24 hours. This morning, while syringe feeding him, I noticed he was grinding his teeth, which I think is a symptom of nausea, so I gave him a dose of Ondansetron, which seemed to make him feel a lot better a couple of hours later--he was actually eating a bit on his own at that point.

I contacted the vet this morning, and he wants me to bring Jude back in so that he can perform chemistries to check organ function to see if something else is going on. He expected that any issues that we believed were related to the Clavamox would be cleared up since Jude hasn't had a dose of it since Saturday night, yet he is still inappetent (which I think is a result of nausea). He is prescribing more Ondansetron, and has increased his dose since it seems to stop working before he's able to take another dose.

Poor fella has terrible diarrhea, which is likely from the Clavamox. I've been trying to get s. boulardii down him, but with syringe feeding him, it's been hard to get a full dose in him.

And Jude's numbers are going back up since I took him off Clavamox. 😟

Oh poor Jude. Do you ever give Cerenia, too?
My vet has me give that if Ivy has a bout of loose stools (as we are trying to head off a pancreatitis flare).

The one time I tried Zofran for Ivy, it didn’t seem to do anything for her. Just made her sleepy.
But it was only one time so I just might not have had good luck.
But the Cerenia seems to have helped us.
Just a thought of something you could ask about or try if you have it in the house
I usually give about a 6 mg dose (Ivy is about 14.5 pounds).
Vet feels the anti inflammatory properties can help her with the flare up.

I keep a vial of ondansetron on hand. Yes, cerenia very good too, maybe better, but cerenia injectable will sting so i’ve only ever been able to use cerenia as pill. When Minner had her colon blow out from me giving her way too much tiki pouches, I used 1/2ml ondansetron (2mg/ml) daily for about a week. My vet told me I can use both ondansetron and cerenia at same time. Minner takes a whole 16mg pill (she’s a big girl).

I don’t get impression there are negative side effects so it seems err on side of over-use when kitty nauseated.

Also, I started using this probiotic with Minner at time of that colon blow out cuz she also got antibiotic then. Minner loves this stuff. I open the gelcaps and sprinkle on her food. I recall Wendy checked it out for me and said it looked good. It may be too late to get in time to help Jude’s diarrhea this time, but for sure anytime using antibiotic can try to ward off by using at same time. I now use it with Minner regularly.

I really hope Jude feels better fast.

I have Cerenia, and I tried it the other day, but I wasn't able to get it down him (I can't get a pill into him). I'm going to need to crush it and give by syringe, and the Ondanestron is an easy-melt version that I melt and syringe into his mouth, so I've just been using it. I'll talk to the vet about the Cerenia tomorrow and ask about giving both meds at the same time. Anti-inflammatory properties would be good for us too, when Jude has a FIC flare.

The vet is only giving Jude 4 mg of Ondanestron every 8-12 hours. And Jude is big too (17.9 lbs). The vet just changed the dose to every 8-12 hours (it was every 12), and Jude cannot make it 12 hours on 4mg. I'll check out the probiotic--thanks for that recommendation. It appears to have s. boulardii in it--perhaps the other bacteria makes it better? Maybe?

Jude's bg at +10 is 300 :arghh:

It's so frustrating! The issue for Jude is the possibility of him having an FIC flare OR a UTI OR something altogether different--the vet thinks it might be a sub-clinical infection, but he wants to rule out anything with his liver/kidneys/pancreas first. His most recent cysto came back clear, so there is no UTI. That leaves FIC flare or something else. It's just too coincidental though that every single time his numbers go up and I give him an ab, the bg goes down (the vet says the abs don't have anti-inflammatory properties that would drive down the numbers). And when I took him off the ab the other day, immediately his numbers went back up.
 
Cerenia is available as an injectable. You can ask the vet about that. It supposedly stings so is commonly given with fluids.
 
So sorry, Mary, I know how stressful it is for you when he isn't feeling well. You give so much support on this board, we all appreciate you tons. Hang in there.
 
Poor Jude. Grinding teeth is a sign of nausea. You are right about that. It will take more than 24 hours for clavamox symptoms to go away I think. I prefer ondansetron for nausea and cerenia for vomiting but every cat is different. Ondansetron doesn’t last long. If you think it helped give it every 6-8 hours.

I'm sorry Mary that Jude still isn't doing well. Hopefully the appointment tomorrow goes well and you can get some answers. Please keep us posted of course. In the meantime boys and I are sending healing vines your way

The dose reduction may have been equally a factor? There’s a lot going on here w/ med changes and timing. You are clearly doing a ton to keep food in him and treat his symptoms. If you can get injectable ondansetron and get vet to advise on most aggressive amount / frequency, you at least would not have to worry about getting it into him orally. Maybe keep both injectable and pills on hand to have options! I echo Elise’s remark about ondansetron for nausea and cerenia for vomiting. I hope vet can also advise on possibly using another antibiotic w/ fewer gastro side effects so you could run a full course, while simultaneously giving probiotic. maybe use injectable for antibiotic too.
