11/23 Mr Kitty AMBG 199

It doesn't seem to be...his breathing is fine. But this is how it started in July - I thought it was pancreatitis but just kept getting worse. He also has a fever (rectal temp was not a pet initiation I ever wanted LOL), which leads me to think it's not the fluid.

Hes been willingly syringed all day but not doing anything on his own, we'll see how he does tomorrow and Thursday. He is dehydrated so just gave him some fluids. Unfortunately ER vets and regular vets here all booked solid, so trying to think positive. It's crazy, our vet has now had to start charging cancellation fees - I know that's standard practice some places, and he's always been super flexible, but I guess they're pulling such long days and long waitlists and then getting no shows.

Sorry that was a bit rambly!

Why do kitties get sick on Sundays and during holidays? I can't get a vet appointment for less than two weeks out. Thankfully there are a few practices around that are walk-in only, which means you show up and get in line behind all of the others who have come before you or who might have sicker animals. I have spent hours waiting outside these clinics during COVID in the heat and freezing cold with a yowling, panting cat.

Poor Mr. Kitty. Hope he starts to feel better soon.

Every. Time.

Unfortunately very few regular vets here did walk ins, and none do them anymore because of COVID (staffing, distancing, etc). Sometimes if you're lucky and call 20 different clinics they may have a same day, but nearly all are unwilling to see such a complicated new patient. Last week on Facebook I saw that 3 of the 5 major emergency clinics were turning people away, and the other two had 6+ hr waits. Crazy times we live in

I’m sorry to hear Mr Kitty is not well Melissa. That’s a worry for you and not being able to get in to see a vet is not good. They should have room for emergencies.
I was always very lucky with Sheba. Because she was a diabetic, my vets would always squeeze her in somewhere. They have retired now and how I miss them!

A fever will definitely take away his appetite. Do you have any antibiotics at home that you can give? Any clavamox? Antirobe? Amoxicillin? Anything? I would like to say keep up with the fluids since you say he’s dehydrated, but what if he has a fluid buildup? Is he getting the Rutin? I know sometimes he does and sometimes he doesn’t- since it’s so difficult to give him. Our ER will take anybody - it’s basically first come first served unless someone comes in with an obvious life threatening situation… then they do triage.

I guess I should be grateful that my vet will almost always let me do a same day “drop off” for a sick kitty. Also no cancellation fee. But it is hard to get a regular appointment for normal stuff and now they aren’t open on Saturdays anymore ☹️ Actually, I was surprised that they are still taking their mid-week days off so they are only working four days a week. I am probably not appreciating what a pressure cooker the vets work in.

The fluid thought had occurred to me as well, but I can't let him get dehydrated either, won't drink and syringing is a mess. I started with about 125mL last night and we'll see.

No Rutin. We debated strating it up again once a day, but decided to see how he does with a pancreatitis cocktail first for a couple days. Lord knows that's enough poking and prodding and pilling.

No antibiotics at home either. I need to call vet for more bupe so just maybe he'd be willing to prescribe it without exam, but I doubt it.

Yes our vets are absolutely jam packed, having staffing issues, and I guess a ton of people went out and got animals during pandemic. My vet actually extended his hours...and anytime he calls me it isn't until 10 or 11pm, I feel bad for him.

I definitely don’t want my vet to burn out so whatever it takes for her to be happy is what I want!
I hope Mr. Kitty will feel better soon!

Fever was up to 105.5 so gave cool bath and at E Vet now. Not super worried, hopefully just infection.

That’s a very high fever. When Darcy was that high he was in DKA and an extremely sick boy. Now that’s not what’s wrong with Mr. Kitty of course… but it’s very worrying. I hope they can start him on some IV fluids, antibiotics and any other meds he needs very soon! I will say a prayer for Mr. Kitty now.

Thank you. Thankfully we got lucky with the wait. Our first call, they said 6-8 hours. Called an hour later, down to 1 hr...somehow. got her and got right in, but still waiting for vet.

Ketones were 0.1 this evening. I really don't know what this could be honestly...he stays in the same room of the house 95% of the time, the other 5% is with me. Perhaps a bad UTI or kidney infection? He missed the litterbox earlier but no discoloration

You think IV fluids are necessary? I was mulling that over, wondering if I could just do subQ at home again (this particular vet needs pushback on like everything or you end up with a massive bill and unnecessary things).

Just saw this Melissa...thankyou for the advice while dealing with Mr. Kitty! Sending love and prayers that you get to bottom of it and it heals up fast! Keep is posted <3

Plan is Veriflox and Onsior, plus 300mL subQ tonight and possibly again tomorrow. Buuuttt he also pulled a bloody mucoid out when he went to get a stool sample (that's new), so we'll see what that's about

I hope this works for Mr. Kitty and gets him feeling better VERY quickly. That’s a lot of subq fluids at one time. I would at least space it out and not give it all at one time. I had a cat that was receiving too many sub-q fluids - she ended up with a pleural effusion. I hope Mr. Kitty’s heart is strong. But you just said that the 300 mL would be for last night and tomorrow, right? And can you water down his food? If you are syringe feeding then you would have to anyway, of course. Sorry this is happening to Mr. Kitty. Did they collect any blood or urine from him?

What are y’all doing for Thanksgiving, Melissa? I hope you have a good Thanksgiving and don’t have a bunch of work (cooking) to do - you have enough going on with Mr. Kitty and the kids.
